I've lost 8 games in a row now against opponents all with over 200 apm. Are there actually still novice players left on the ladder? I feel like there's no point in losing to lower my MMR if I'm the only active bad player. I don't really want to resort to measures like practicing build orders in solo games or reading up on strategy, where's the fun in that? I want to improve by playing ranked against people of my skill level and slowly improve. You may want to just leave like 10+ game in a row.

That stuff is fun btw. And practicing builds orders is a humbling experience because if you watch the rep you realize that you can't even do the shit properly with no opponent around...

You are only accurately placed if you win ~50% of your games, meaning that you have to learn how to lose games without getting tilted if you plan to play enough games to get to that point and transcend beyond it.

I guess it is common effect for like 90% of players. Specially in 5v5 games like LoL or DotA, where you always have someone else to blame :D

I know that won’t always translate to wins, probably if you care only about MMR you should perfect some build, but in terms of overall game sense and mechanics I’d like to just play somewhat defensive strategies against players of equal skill level and slowly improve.

That's also a way to develop bad habits, because you are playing in response to your field and not in response to what you will face in the future. In other words, you will run into weird low MMR shit, inefficient or nonsensical build orders, etc. and because you are using this as your learning foundation, you will be misled into doing things that don't make sense. This game has 20 years of history, it makes sense to base your learning of it at least somewhat on that history and not on biased perception of low level ladder experience.

I honestly have trouble conceptualizing what it means. usually if I run into problems with my skill level the simple answer is to just play more. i don't know if I believe in, like, technical exercises or special coaching.
