The bots in the tournament are still around D+, so even a BW player coming back from a hiatus stands a chance.

It'll give you some competition which will drive you to improve. There's also the BWAPI that was recommended and you can playing the fake PL that Qikz is running (not sure if there's a pause atm though, pm him. As for BOs and matchup guides, for Zerg? I usually just check LP and watch vods or fpv to see what they do. I feel like if I ask this question here, a lot of people would answer "no," and would probably argue that these features would hurt the game. If you feel this way, I would like to understand why. Why would the inclusion of these features make Brood War less fun?

I feel like if I ask this question here, a lot of people would answer "no," and would probably argue that these features would hurt the game. If you feel this way, I would like to understand why. Why would the inclusion of these features make Brood War less fun? Because they would significantly lower the skill ceiling and cause imbalances. Unlimited Unit Selection: Instead of 11 Mutalisks being controlled by a good player you would suddenly encounter 20+. It's easier for Zerg, but not for Terran. Hence, imbalance. MBS: Zerg can select up to twelve Larvae, thus making re-inforcing easier, yet controlling the re-inforcements harder, a good compromise. However, one click to re-inforce everything slightly faster and another to suddenly control it nearly perfectly. Well, you see where this is going. Auto-Cast: It is in BW for medics. Everything else is hard - imagine tons of perfect Dark Swarms and Psi Storm. The fun comes from being able to cast that on your own, not from having your units manually do it for you. ... 8[

Unlimited Unit Selection: Instead of 11 Mutalisks being controlled by a good player you would suddenly encounter 20+. It's easier for Zerg, but not for Terran. Hence, imbalance. That is a very good point and a great reason for the game to keep 12 unit selection MBS: Zerg can select up to twelve Larvae, thus making re-inforcing easier, yet controlling the re-inforcements harder, a good compromise. However, one click to re-inforce everything slightly faster and another to suddenly control it nearly perfectly. Well, you see where this is going. It seems to me that the same could be said for Terran and Protoss reinforcements, so balance should still be kept in this example. Auto-Cast: It is in BW for medics. Everything else is hard - imagine tons of perfect Dark Swarms and Psi Storm. The fun comes from being able to cast that on your own, not from having your units manually do it for you. That was my mistake. I meant to say smart cast, not autocast. This way, the player must still cast the spell themself. Would you say that the interface in BW is something that you just have to get used to, but eventually you come to appreciate it? That is to say, for a new player to the series, if they play 20 hours of both games, they will probably prefer SC2, but if they play 200 hours of both games, they will probably prefer BW?

Smart Cast is another questionable idea, it slightly favours Terran and Protoss imo - suddenly SK-Terran would become way more powerful than it is now. You could easily irradiate a ton of Defilers, whereas Defilers do not gain much. Hard to say for me. And yes, the interface is something that grows on you, same as Scarab/Goon/Goliath bugs. You develope a love/hate thing for it over time. It's sad that most new players simply expect these features and don't test the existing things. Probably besides the simple graphics (overview wise) the main reason BW is still appealing to many of us. Never understood why these jump'n'run games are successful, whereas BW struggles. Might be elitists being so hard ass about the questions, then again after the same question in variation 100 your temper gets the better of you.

New players who are primarily exposed to modern games will prefer sc2 not just because of interface but other reasons (graphics, accessibility , larger community etc.) Some may actually appreciate and sort of understand what BW is about (and not just lump all BW players as elitist) since the essence of gameplay goes far beyond interface/QoL controls. Meanwhile I will just be sitting in my rocking chair enjoying old BW vods...
