Hey guys, despite being quite old I never checked out BW online play back in the days, which I kinda regret.

At the moment I'm a bit bored of SC2, so I thought I could give BW a late try but is there a realistic chance that I'll be actually able to enjoy it or will I just get crushed? In SC2 I play at low-mid masters level.

If you think it's worth to give it a shot, where should I start?

Thanks in advance.

Play on iccup. The first build you should try is The Stove. There is a guide in strategy section.

Yes, vs. CPU or on ICCup and try to find players on your level you can regularly play.

I should have probably mentioned that I wanted to play Zerg, as it's my "main" race in SC2.

Get ready for some major/epic differences. How you view BW will be entirely up to you, but there is nothing denying the fact that game play wise, they are 2 different games.

You're gonna want to to do some searches around TL as there are quite a few threads out there already from ppl who have attempted BW, as well as ppl on TL responding to these people, letting them know exactly how BW and SC2 are different.

IMHO, if you stick to the game, you will have a blast. An ABSOLUTE blast

You will get crushed, but you will also be able to enjoy the game. Also, getting better on BW feels sooo much better than on SC2!

Play custom / micro maps. They're more fun and you get to interact with other gamers. Read liquidpedia and play BGH a lot until your micro & macro are somewhat reliable. 1v1 is hard and it's easy to lose the motivation so stick with this until you gain some confidence.

If you're going to play BW be sure you have a nice posturing and try not to flick with your wrist too much... I've put too much stress on my wrist just playing the campaign.

But yeah BW is pretty damn fun.

BGH is a great tip, turtle and try out stuff. Mix with v computer and UMS - maps. But i think that you will soon discover what you enjoy most, and just stick with that. I acutally play alot of UMS even though its kind of stupid to spend 1½ h on poker defence...

Guys, I can already tell that I'll start playing BW after these few posts.

I'm not scared of a steep learning curve, as a matter of fact I get very ambitious once I set my mind on something and enjoy working hard.

What are the first things that I should work on to become a good Zerg player? Any kind of advice and or links are very appreciated.

Edit: What is BGH?

game hunters, a really simple and a map that has been around for AGES. The mineral patches is pretty much limitless, also two gas. Sometimes you can find games such as 4v4 BGH or so, or my personal favorite "2v2v2v2". (for you who haven´t seen it - watch day9 when he plays with tristan(?), amazing fun!)

Search for threads like this. Honestly, this question has been posed to death. Liquipedia.net has a good sc1 section, too.

You will not regret starting Brood War. It's an exiting game. But you will have to give it more time to start enjoying it. I started to play BW a few months before SC2 came out, bought SC2 , saw it sucks, came back to BW and I'm having great time playing.

Why are there so few 1v1 games, anyone know? All is usually UMS, weird modes, and weird maps. Makes it really difficult to find a game, especially if you don't have IP & router access for port-forward.

well not many people play on iccup. if you want to find 1v1s, fish had thousands upon thousand of people. leave the game list open for 2 mins and literally 100+ games are up

This thread should help you as the OP was in the same position. And as many posters already said, go on iccup, OP teamliquid. There should be enough people who are willing to help newcomers, at least thats my impression. Play customs if you are scared of ladder as you will get crushed the first 50games or so.
How to improve in general. Read Liquipedia, search some guides (I think ver made a very useful one), watch Vods or Replays and have fun.

I would recommend getting a hotkey setup you find comfortable first, as it will help with the macro. For Z the most common seems to be 1-4/5 units and the rest hatcheries and get comfortable using the f2-f4 camera hotkeys for macro and rallying...In general these will be used no matter what build you do.

Then the first micro trick you should learn is muta stacking with an overlord, because it is oh so much fun, and can be used (to some extent) in any matchup.

edit: Also watching first person streams is a great way to go...you will undoubtedly be able to details in what people do that are sometimes difficult to put into words. Zakari is one zerg bw streamer that I seems to be on a fair amount recently, but there are others too.

BGH is big game hunters

where the "fastest possible map" has like 100 stacked mineral patches glitched to be RIGHTnext to your starting point, BHG is just a map where the main has like 20 huge mineral patches and 2 vespene, so it's really fun for like 4v4 or 2v2 or 2v2v2v2 or 3v3 or FFA
