To be honest I expected a slow transition to SC2.. I didn't expect things to end up like this... Is a transition even possible from an economic viewpoint? how on earth are SC2 teams sponsored by chicken going to pay BW players?

to be honest, there is no point in bringing SC2 up,it has nothing to do with it,its just these sponsors feel that they should spend less money on something niche.
so simply put, like TTT said money is leaving the industry.Weather or not there will be more I do not know.

But esport is growing in global size, I don't see why you would think SC2 is not related at all. esport isn't just SC related as well, we are having more games being sponsored like LoL and Dota 2.
Just as these companies are not seeing it as a worthwhile investment, there are more companies now in global that have a chance to invest

I'd love to see a Baby, Jaedong, Sea team sponsored by a company like Korean Air.

This is all off topic. The point is not that there are no companies anywhere investing in esports. The point is that 3 large companies are withdrawing money from it. I don't know why you keep bringing up this global topic because it has nothing to do with the situation. This is not a thread about the global state of investments in all esports, it is about 3 companies of high note folding on it. I don't know how to explain it to you more clearly.

To be honest, I don't see e-sports growing. 10 years ago, it was Counter-Strike. Now it's DotA(and incoming DotA2) and SC2 with regular tournaments with cash prizes. E-sports didn't grow; it actually stagnated. What you see as 'growth' is actually players switching games. You didn't feel the impact of the older games being phased out.
Did you think Counter-Strike now is still as popular as it was 10 years ago? The same thing is happening to BW. Sponsors are pulling out and there's no other sponsors that are replacing those sponsors that left as of now.

Uhh what? it stagnated?
You really think 10 years ago counter-strike had as many people as a MLG of today?
To think it has not grown is just being ignorant..

Everything is kind of related, sponsorship withdrawing/maintaining is certainly because they have their benefits and cost. You can't just ignore what caused them to make this decision, they have their reasons and it is through that, you can see whether your comment about esport and "nothing to do with SC2 and global" is really correct or not. You are just focusing too much of the end effect rather than why
anyway, this is just my 2cent.

I think you are not aware how CS was popular. It was BW of western world with players like Heaton, Potti, Spawn having super big ass contracts. Also it had the most players playing on-line for many years after release. Probably only WoW / other mmo or some moba beat those numbers later (this one is my speculation actually).
CPL, ESWC, WCG, Dreamhack, + 10 other big tournaments i cant remember + thousands of small local/national LANs + ClanBase events/ESL/Nation wars. Now its dying for sake of CS-clones with better graphics.
We are moving into new E-sports era, and sacrifices are made, terrible ones. Sorry for derail.
As for topic, i would say that merging is the best available option, it will make competition more fierce in upcoming season (which brings viewers) and mitigate the harm done. Yes there is a question of "left-over" players, and honestly i think some may change to SC2 because no one will contract them (similar to estro/sparkyz case). Ideally new sponsors + ressurecting all teams would be the best but its to good to be true at this stage.

Flash is ruining eSports Lol.

Ughhhh
I honestly believe there should be a rule that SC2 should never be mentioned in the BW forums, it always leads to stupid derailment.
Or at the very least, important subjects like this shouldn't be posted in community news

Thanks for the memories Flash!
But on a serious note, it is very scary to see what was for many years a very stable league (the most stable in eSports ever one could argue) get so badly shaken up and have support for several teams withdrawn. As someone who primarily watches SC2 now but also used to watch a lot of BW (still do sometimes), it shows that both games could end up dying (or becoming significantly weaker, BW will never die!) with only WeMade FOX attempting a venture to SC2 but now retracting support for both BW and SC2. I was hoping to see a small transition in Korea with some of the weaker teams to SC2, (there have been players but not enough significant financial support) kind of like a bridge between two worlds but instead it's looking more like a burning building on both sides with some sort of Indiana Jonesesque death pit in the middle. I hope that a large company can still see the value in supporting BW and SC2 and provide a net for these teams and players whos' futures are uncertain.

FUCKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK
Seriously, HWASEUNG!!!
It was bad enough with MBC going.... oh my god....
Good bye brood war. I knew this day was coming, but so soon...
I wish, I wish this wasn't so...
I wonder if they will make it so the remaining teams are more balanced? More rivalries that are possible instead of SKT vs KT.
Have Jaedong transfer to Samsung to make them another powerhouse to challenge the top?
Must cross finger for BW proscene future. BAH! I hate you SC2. Destroying the BW scene...

I don't understand why so many people think that the decline in number of BW teams is because of SC2's rise. Are there signs that corporations are eager to rush into the SC2 scene? Is Hwaseung or MBCGame jumping ship so that they can put money in SC2? The decline is simply because these corporations are operating their teams at a loss and cannot stay from a business point and because of the incredible damage done by the match-fixing scandal. Why some TLers still bow to savior like he's some kind of saint is beyond me.

It seems to me like only the very best 1-2 teams in Brood War actually make profit out of it or atleast have awesome sponsors. If ur a mediocre team there isn't much money in it and I can imagine sponsoring a full time team is expensive, finding new sponsors will be almost impossible.

Hmm 12 yearish old game losing sponsers... how is everyone surprised????
