Because this 12 yearish old game has had a stable scene until just recently, and has had the highest amount of viewers this year compared to every other year.

A lot of sponsors see their money as an investment, so if they don't see the kind of growth they want in the future they will pull their sponsorships. It's the same concept behind professional sports a lot of the time too -- that's why you see Nike sponsoring people like Tiger Woods early on and hoping they get to the top.

And professional sports which lose popularity or never had much to start with tend to die out completely all the time right? Right? Wrong. Your example underminds your point.
Edit: Regarding the guy above me: the mods apparently

Can you name a single sponsor that has switched from BW to SC2 sponsorships?
Hwaseung didn't stop sponsoring just BW, they stopped sponsoring eSports alltogether. If you can't figure out why this is bad for everyone, I don't know what to tell you.
If all 3 teams merge into one, that's gonna be one hell of a strong team. Jaedong, Killer, RoRo, Baby, Hiya, Sea, Jaehoon, etc. It would really hurt the chances of Samsung.
8 teams would probably mean 4 make the playoffs, and it kind seems all fulfilled already.
1. (S)KT 2. (S)KT 3. CJ 4. Woongjin or New Team 5. " 6. Khan 7. STX 8. Ace

Always wanted to use this smilie. Saying that Flash is somehow at fault is complete bullshit. The best player of all time, playing the best BroodWar ever seen by man is making people lose interest in the game.

Well some people are taking it a bit far with all sorts of rationalisations how seeing the same guy in the finals of most contemporary individual leagues is detrimental et cetera, et cetera, ad nauseum. It's fine if it's all a joke, but it seems to me that not everyone is on the same page.

I remember someone mentioned some Koreans were saying that too (well maybe not killing BW, but the whole "he wins and something bad happens"). And I thought imagine if Flash read that and if he would take it as a joke or if he would actually feel bad about his achievements like his wins were somewhat cursed. If I were Flash I'd be pretty sad to read it. But I understand it's a joke, and flash doesn't read TL haha

If you were flash then you would be a machine, and incapable of sadness.

The way that everyone can stop or reverse this trend is to watch more Starcraft!!! If the proleague or the GSL says that they have x amounts of viewers per game they will continue to sponsor the teams. We, as a community, need to watch more starcraft especially during the either of the finals.

A problem is that none of the foreign views actually contribute to the spectator numbers because BW is broadcasted via TV, and foreigners have to help themselves with restreams. So it is different from the GSL which is a pure internet thingy.
The Flash joke is funny, but it's also a little sad because some people really do think that way.
I think it's obvious that it's a coincidence --- whoever was the top player in these months would be afflicted with the same "curse." But some people will tell you he's really killing BW, as if his dominance were a negative force rather than a raising of the bar.
