MBCGame to shut down? - Page 40

Keep any SC2 vs BW comments out of this thread. This is a thread about Brood War and Esports (Tekken Crash, Special Forces, etc) in general. If you discuss what this means for ESPORTS be sensitive about it.

If this is the case maybe it might even be good for SC as the internet offers so much more options to build a community around the game and provide professional players with additonal sources to earn money (coaching, streaming...). If I remember correctly a few weeks ago in one of the bigger shows (OMG.tv or SotG) somebody alread discussed that maybe SC/eSports does not need the TV to be successful or "mainstream". Perhaps in other countries, but in Korea eSports on TV works a bit differently. BW is broadcasted on 2 public game channels, so BW on TV pulls in more viewers than BW on the Internet does. How? People who never heard of eSports typically don't take the time to involve themselves with it/look up information on it since they are uninterested. However, if you have BW on public TV, while someone is channel surfing, they may accidentally stumble upon a live broadcast of a BW match happening and it may capture their interest. Now on the Internet, you may accidentally stumble across a BW video or click on something BW-related out of boredom as well, but the odds of getting a new viewer from TV is greater than getting one from the Internet. This is one of the various ways how BW gains more viewers and has become mainstream in Korea, and some progamers have stated in interviews that the reason they became a progamer is because of seeing Starcraft on TV when they were little. Thanks to the help of public television, BW has become widely successful and mainstream in Korea. Now people having less access to the Internet back in the day did play a large role in BW's success in Korea, but people in Korea usually prefer sitting in front of the TV with their family and enjoying a meal together while watching some live Starcraft instead of sitting alone and watching Starcraft on their computer. Tl;dr: eSports, in Korea, needs the help of TV viewers in order to be successful. This is one of the major reasons why SC2 is not as popular as BW right now in Korea.

Could a stream handle 1 million concurrent viewers without acting up? Does anyone even know? Those are the uncertainties I'm talking about. The royal wedding had millions and millions of viewers and did not stutter even once. Streaming is ready for mainstream.

By "millions and millions" you mean just above a million? Also that was one event, with absolutely massive resources behind it. That hardly proves streaming is ready for "mainstream" on a large scale.

Peer 2 Peer streaming is the future of TV in general I believe. It's good because it means you don't need a football field of transmission equipment to produce something really well. Then again, having said football field of dishes is always nice.
