Keep any SC2 vs BW comments out of this thread. This is a thread about Brood War and Esports (Tekken Crash, Special Forces, etc) in general. If you discuss what this means for ESPORTS be sensitive about it. |

Agreed 100%. GSL boasts a nice prize pool, but it's a really small fish when it comes to sponsorship and advertising revenue, public recognition etc. Without the proper infrastructure, SC2 will be just another video game, nothing like the cultural phenomenon BW was.

I had a terrible day at work today, I come and read this... *sigh* not a good day.

wow. normally starting the day with starcraft makes it better, not worse. this is just really sad.

Yes, if MBCGame "dies", then it will also affect the SC2 scene in Korea. Definitely a bad move for both BW and SC2 then.
GSL is actually broadcast on Anibox, which is becoming a gaming channel, which is why people are saying Anibox might take up BW now.
But yes, this is bad for both games.

Fucking worst news ever

IMHO, we need to give MBC and OGN the financial incentive to keep on broadcasting BW games; that's really the only way they can keep on broadcasting games if they see that their audience share for them is correspondingly flat. Provide them options to actually get some benefit out of us. There's no way we can keep on watching BW forever without eventually having to directly support them with advertising revenue. I want MBC to keep on broadcasting BW, but we have to show that they have an audience outside of Korea that also cares as much as those within the country so they can reconsider!

TV RIP.
Streaming/vod internet "TV" live long \o/.

Sad on so many levels. Ruined my week
Just when I thought things were starting to pick up for BW with the Bliz resolution. I feel for the MBC PL team fans especially.
I'm just sitting in here at my PC in shock. What can you say?

At least now players dont need to answer what is their goal when playing MSL as you cant get seed anymore (unless Ongamenet decides to make minor league below OSL)
|
Not surprised, they've been having trouble with finances and getting sponsors for a while now =( Very sad.

sad....

Guys lets organize TL to petition GOM (or somebody else, but GOM already has the infrastructure and experience to broadcast esports) to grab the MSL. I started playing sc2 and had just started watching BW events. (like the last MSL).
I'm just curious-what does OGN broadcast when not broadcasting the OSL/PL? Is there time for another league? i.e. 2 bw leagues?
I heard that they did the WCG sc2 preliminaries.
+ Show Spoiler +Without meaning to offend anyone or violate the mod notes-(mod please PM me if I should remove this) + Show Spoiler +Imagine OGN and GOM each broadcasting 1 bw league and 1 sc2 league for 4 leagues total! (Or maybe OSL+ASL for BW and ASL/OSL + GSL for sc2)

Sad news.
Hm, do you guys also see a trend that SC goes back to the internet and backs away from TV? If this is the case maybe it might even be good for SC as the internet offers so much more options to build a community around the game and provide professional players with additonal sources to earn money (coaching, streaming...).
If I remember correctly a few weeks ago in one of the bigger shows (OMG.tv or SotG) somebody alread discussed that maybe SC/eSports does not need the TV to be successful or "mainstream".

Oh they also have WWE wrestling for some reason. Guessing there’s gonna be a big WWE games promotion soon but they first need to show Koreans what wrestling is before they push the wrestling games.
I don't get MBC Game so I don't know how they compare.

Online streaming technology will still need several years to be become a stable, "complete" product like TV is. There are still a lot of glitches, uncertainties and problems of scale, it's not going to replace TV any time soon.
