I am like alot of you guys, super excited for sc2 at first but it's lost its spark now. I even built my own computer just so I could play sc2 (thankfully, sc2 came bundled with my graphics card...) but after getting deeper into sc2, i have to admit the dumbed down mechanics is actually detrimental to the game. You guys remember Nestea's interview where he said it would be much harder to have a consistently dominating player like flash/jd? It's because sc2 multitasking is so little now compared to bw. instead, builds/strategies play a greater role in sc2.

watch the JD vs Baby match from yesterday's winner's league. it was jd's OUT-OF-THIS-WORLD multitasking that got him back into the game to eventually win it despite his third getting shut down (NOT CANCELED) THREE times!!!. the observer couldn't even keep up with jd's multitasking as he was dark swarming, plague-ing, sniping dropship and vessels, lurker burrowing, utilizing nydus canal, etc. in five different screens at lightening speed while also macro-ing. (and he also managed to micro his drone to snipe an scv near the end while this was all going on...for those who caught that...haha) and Baby is KNOWN for his multitasking ability. i think the problem with a game too heavily reliant on builds and strategies is that if the lucky person chose a better build out of chance, there's less ways to bridge the gap. that's why in the gsl we keep getting ppl just steamrolled almost always within 15 minutes. and given that an rts is not like chess where you can read your opponents moves from the start, no one can deny that there is an element of chance/luck involved in chosen strategies.

Im not sure if you've seen Flash in the FP portion of VODs, but he's actually one of the slower players. Zerg generally have the best multitasking ability due to their constant macroing from different locations of the map. I wouldn't go as far as to say "known for his multitasking ability", i would say fight 3 battles at once.

It's not "easy" as I stated, but in comparison to BW it's alot easier and less stressful. FFS probe rally x_x haha.

Oh I main protoss, for life

Also thanks for the support everyone. By easy I meant that tons of things are dumbed down, like it's not even fun anymore. Most of the times you barely need to macro, okay pull 1 unit away and put back, press a hotkey and spam a button to rally in more units, ENTIRE ARMY ON 1 KEY etc. It got boring and there's not much variety. By not much variety I mean if you stray off from a common and strong build you might either: a) get totally shitted on or b) win. I hate doing a certain build against every MU and shit. I watch BW games and I just see EPIC things going down which is why i want to play it, not to mention the graphics (nostalgia).

This is also the reason I started playing KR servers for SC2.

You want to play BW because you think SC2 is too easy and isnt a challenge. But you choose to play Protoss?

The only thing stopping me from going back to bw is knowing the fact that sc2 will eventually kill bw off. And with blizz lawsuit and all... I just don't see much hope for bw. damn you dustin browder. damn you.
On topic, just pick a race, and play play play. Iccup. watch vods. google and tl.net is your best friend. I remember the first time I learned the proper protoss hotkey setup. Blew my mind. But there is no easy way of learning the mechanics other than practice-proper practice. glhf.

here is what i am feeling right now, honestly sc2 in korea is not going to be big for a couple of years, if the forgien scene can be picked up, we will see a good amount of the pros come back. i auctally posed this question to artosis. if the bw had a resurgance and the sc2 scene started to die out, would he come back. and his answer was and i quote

" I would go back if the tournament scene was big and SC2 died out, of course. I will always love SC1. It will never, ever happen though."

so i guess its up to the community to do so

not to insult protoss players but i agree with this. While bw toss is mechanicaly more complex than any sc2 race, it's still considered pretty easily the least mechanicly taxing of all the bw races. Your not gonna make to many combacks with sheer speed as a toss player unless its one of those awesome pvz's

I don't think anyone can say this for sure though. CS 1.6 is still going strong and has more players than Black Ops on steam.

Good games will always be played. I mean.. people still play NES Mario because it's just a great game.

I'm going to go ahead and say I THIRD the notion that Toss is a lot easier to bare with at the lower Iccup ranks. Obviously the higher your Iccup rank the more Toss players will struggle, but at the D through D+ levels I'd say it's a joke for Toss. I just watched Kawaii Rice lose to a Toss player with like 80 APM if I remember correctly. Everyone on the stream was dying with laughter.

Everything is so floaty, liquidy, and weightless in modern rendering.

I'm in the same boat as the OP, actually. Getting back into playing BW in a big way after burning out on, and subsequently uninstalling, SC2.

Sorry but I disagree! If you think the SC2 mechanic is easier then you have to understand that thats a good thing. Its like saying :: Why do we have GRID hotkeys cos it just makes hot-keying easier, We shud all just use normal hotkeys,Cos only then does true skill come out....
I guess there will always be people who dislike progress and favor glitchiness attributing it to uniqueness but I for one, find playing BW an exercise of frustration these days and not cos im losing(D+ on iCup) but because of retarded pathing.
While an A+/- level player obviously can play smoother than me I feel that I should not have to, in this day and age, want to play a game for its glitchy mechanic. And I just wanna tell all of you that C&C red alert actually has a slightly better Pixel-precision and visual wiighting than BW and is even older. This is simply because of the way sprites were rendered and have no place imo in todays era of Gaming.
We have to remember that the true skill of RTS gaming HAS to be based on strategy. Multitasking and execution while very important have to take a secondary role to the more important requirement of being a clever player. This is from a playing perspective...
Please remember that only after the release of parts 2 & 3 will SC2 be complete as a game. Huge mechanical changes are still to come and there are many exciting times ahead of us and it is truly inevitable that BW will finally have to make way for whatever version of SC2 there is in the future.
I have succesfully managed to make a lotta my friends watch SC2(MLG/GSL) and enjoy it! However not even one can watch BW with me cos they find it a tacky game to watch! However I still find watching BW stimulating and I have to ask myself, is it just because of my personal BW
bias that I find it better than SC2 to watch.
Nada bought me to BW pro-gaming in 2004 and nowadays I find myself only watching the games with Flash(hoping he'll lose!), Jaedong(Hoping he'll win!), Bisu and Kal(hoping they won't choke!) and Stork('cos he's awesome!).

You really believe that? You completely misunderstand the SC2 business plan. You see, it has NOTHING to do with esports as a goal. It is as simple as that, esports only serves as the means toward attracting more buyers, casuals, sales revenue is the real end. And the game is tailored to that end.
Aah thats the stuff..

MBS und Custom Hot-Keys are fine. Smart Cast, super smart unit KI are not okay. Because of smart cast spells in Sc2 are not very exciting. With too good Unit KI you have to dumb down units like Reaver and tanks.

Really interesting post. I have exactly the same sensations when i play those games, Sc2 feels "liquid", all the units seem to glide. In bw their behaviour is completly different.
I also like that expression: "visual weight". Thank you for fiding those words, sometimes it is quite hard to express.
I went back to bw for the same reasons.

there will always be people coming back to games that have established themself. They normally tend to jump to newer games that are supposed to be similar for a period of time but they return often. Also new releases tend to bring new players to the genre dominating game.

Thats a reason why those games take years to die. And after the announcement of sc2 alot of people started to look at bw again hehe.
So if you have are scared about bw dieing ... you will probably have a few years to play it. And as far as bw players are concerned. Because they play such an old school game they normally don't have problems to get into a newer game really fast (so no need to be afraid). I mean everyone that played through rick dangerous, will laugh at newer jump and runs and rather play it again.

As it goes for me only thing i am watching from bw are the epic games with one 30 kill dragoon etc. Other then that korean pro games got boring for me as it became the same after a while and you would have to watch 7 games to find one non standard, excluding cheese of course. (lost interest before sc2 beta). But that is probably because i can't understand the casters, which is the best thing for me funny casters.

so thats kinda interesting. for me its not important to have funny casters nor it is important that i understand them. casters have to bring emotion to the game and get me excited which is what almost all of the english-speaking casters fail to do for me xD

Did anyone imply SC2 could not have great games? I'm failing to get the point of this post.
