Getting back to BW

I used to play BW since around 04, but I only played it with friends every night on LAN and all we did was play fastest possible haha. I didn't know that anything outside fastest and sunken D even existed.

With that being said, I'd like to get back into BW, except as a serious player now. I got really good at SC2 in a short matter of time and I'm super bored of how easy it is. I want a challenge.

I pretty much don't know anything about BW, anyone have a good place to get started?

Private ladder where all competitive players outside Korea play. It's pretty tough but don't be discouraged. Don't worry about strategies, just work on your macro and multitasking for now (a lot tougher in BW than in SC2), once you can macro to a reasonable degree (keep resources below 500 most of the time), then read up on strategies in the BW Strategy forum or on BW Liquipedia.

you might want to try brainclan instead of iccup now that it kind of is losing players.. much more crowded on brainclan

lol saying you got good at sc2 and saying it is too easy is pretty funny because i doubt you were actually good as nobody would have heard of you so don't try to say that :D.

But for bw your going to be asking alot of questions in the strategy section as its a very tough game ^^.

SC:BW is 100% mechanically more difficult to become proficient at than SC2. Lack of MBS, 12 unit selection, no smart casting... I don't think you have to become a pro to think a game is too simple. Not everyone defines mastery of a game as being the best player in existence. For some mastering the concepts of the game is the challenge.

It's like if I say I wanna play Go because Checkers is too easy. Sure I'm not the best checkers player in the world, but checkers really is decidedly simple. I can feel like I've 'mastered' checkers without going to competitions.

Even though there might be many definitions of ”good” when it comes to SC, its pretty ridiculous to claim that OP wasnt good because you havent heard of him. There are tons of good players that you never heard of. For me it’s a good thing that people get back to BW so why don’t you give him some tips instead of this “yo, come back when u won GSL”-attitude?

On topic:
People have already mentioned the benefits of Liquipedia, iCCup and watching professional BW, so I just want to add that many find it easier to pick a race and focus on one match up at the time. It is also good to find people you can play regularly, preferably people that are slightly better then yourself. Lastly, don’t get discouraged if you lose all the time, because you will, instead just focus on having fun and see your losses as a part of the process of getting better.

finding a clan on west or east is probably more fun than just fighting random people on iccup. Its good to do both but if your new it would probably be benificial to join a clan and get help from players who know the game a bit better. However, assume everyone on west or east is a D player no matter how good they seem and they say their rank is. Players off iccup have no way of judging their rank and whenever they get better at sc they just assume that if their a half a level better than whatever they last thought their rank was.
Why would I play sctoo when I can play BW?

If you visited East or West recently you would know that the foreign scene on both servers are pretty dead. Hell, even /j clan X17 went under.

i've been an avid bw fan since 98. gave the sc2 thing a go from beta until now and i have to say the game just isnt fun anymore (for me at least). sure sc2 uses more strategy than bw, but it is nowhere near the challenge bw is mechanically. when strategy becomes second nature, all that's left to improve on are mechanics. and lets be honest, how many of us are constantly coming up with new strategies? most of us have a few strategies in the bag and work off those.

watch a TON of videos and get back into gaming. at this point, if you're still clueless, then just ladder random and see the results. after the season ends, you're back on and fresh of a D- season. xD.

But in a serious sense, i agree with puppykiller. just go on US East or west. mostly everyone will be like mid D... low D+ max. just play there, get warmed up, then go on iccup.

excuse me guys is it just me or broodwar is years ahead of sc2? just played a match in iccup and its pretty damn hard compared to sc2... i think im quitting sc2 for BW
