I can't blame CSL for switching to SC2 - it's new and shiny and the player base is going to be huge - but CSL for Brood War was awesome and a lot of people (myself included) are going to miss it. But it would be silly not to have any intercollegiate BW just because CSL is switching, right? So I figure I might as well make that happen! Enter CBW -> Collegiate Brood War.

"Wait," you might be thinking, "shouldn't there be an 'L' for 'League' at the end of that?" Well, no. With SC2 out I have no doubt that participation levels in anything BW will be significantly lower, so rather than a CSL style league with a fancy website and a 4 player minimum for teams and playoffs the #1 aim of CBW is just to provide an opportunity for some games for those of us who still love BW. Are you the only person at your university who wants to play? 1 or 2 person teams are fine! Every week each team will be matched up against another team and it is 100% your responsibility to coordinate when and how you will play. If such a not-serious thing makes you want to rip your shirt off in anger and you want to run a more serious league be my guest : 3
In order to accommodate different levels of participation, there are many different suggested match setups for two teams playing each other: + Show Spoiler +1v1: Bo1 or Bo3 between the players 1v2: Single player plays both other players, ace match if necessary 2v2: Proleague style Bo3 (ace match if necessary) or both members of one team play both members the other team with an ace match if the score is tied 2:2 3v3: Bo3 or each player on one team plays a Bo3 with a player from the other team 4v4: Proleague style Bo5 (ace match if necessary) Games may be played on any of the maps in the Iccup map pool. If you can't agree on a map use one of {Fighting Spirit, Grand Line, Match Point} and if you can't agree on those just use Fighting Spirit. Use whatever match setup you can agree upon (even if it's not on the above list) but if you can't agree upon one then use the suggested format that involves the minimum amount of games played. If one team has fewer players than the other use the format for the lower number of players.
Maybe you are super excited and want to sign up for this! How do you do that? Just fill out this signup and post it in this thread:
School: _____ TL Account Name of your team's coordinator: _____ Iccup ID of your team's coordinator: _____ Minimum # of players you think you will have each week (don't bullshit me or yourself): _____

I like this a lot, but fear you won't get enough players to make per/school representation worthwhile - part of what makes proleague exciting is that Flash cannot simply all-kill everyone, depth is important.
If there isn't a lot of interest then it may make sense to merge schools into regional teams or even run a draft (players are free agents and coaches take turns picking players). I think a draft could be a lot of fun, and we'd get to meet some new people.
With fewer larger teams it is a lot easier to ensure that (1) sufficient players show up on time, and (2) sufficient teammates are available to practice and discuss games. I think 7-10 players is a healthy team size for a weekly bo5, provided everyone is given an opportunity to play. Because this is CBW, there will certainly be weeks where some people won't be able to make their games and backups are needed.
I don't like the idea of a 1-man team.
|
aww the person has to be in a college T.T
I'll pass till next year
|
Yeah, I'd hope that schools could field *at least* four people, same as last year, unless we do want to do some sort of regional thing. I know at Michigan there are at least three to four people who are decent at BW and aren't that interested in SC2 and would probably like to get involved in this.
I also like the draft idea - one of the best parts about the CSL was getting to know other people.

Hey Dims, should I join and merc for you? lolol.

I think if you just hosted a channel on iccup during certain days where people can just get some games in will be better than trying to do some semi-unorganized league, but gL

Once I've started classes and can ask around, I'll definitely try to find people to play from UMass Lowell. Until then I will refrain from "registering". But I'm glad to see this coming back. And like other people have said, if leagues don't end up working that doens't mean a channel can't be kept on icCup to get some friendlies going on whatever.

City/ Region actually sounds doable. instead of all the different schools in the divisions, we might as well make it division vs division or something.

If we do region, perhaps we may as well make it not just college? There are few enough BW players right now as it is, so I figure high school or whatever works too.

The reasons Collegiate starcraft is so much fun is you get to hang out and meet with your team and stuff. Teams by region doesn't really work in that respect, but if people want to do it then do it! Just as there's no reason we can't have Collegiate starcraft just because CSL switched to SC2 there's no reason you can't have a region based league just it's not what I'm running.
Also I think people are overestimating how "serious business" this is. There are eight teams signed up so far and I don't anticipate that number getting very large. I might be open to letting smaller teams join together / letting alumni play for their alma mater if that would result in more uniform team sizes.

This is such a great news and thread. Mad props to OP to bring this idea back after seeing some sadness of CSL going to SC2. But I don't have to feel sad anymore thanks to this!!!
I would like to sign up but I realized I'm just a sole TLer at my college and there's no other SC BW player I ever or will expect to meet anytime soon.... and me being a one man team.... idk about that..
So unless someone wants to make a NYC region team (consisting just NYC college students), I might have to wait and see what happens...

If you are the only person at your college you should sign up anyway and see what happens. Depending on the number of small (ie less than 3 people) teams there are out there it might makes sense to either Have two divisions; small teams and large teams or merge a bunch of the small teams together to make a couple larger teams
The #1 point of this is to play games and have fun, as long as your down for that you should sign up.
|
"Teams organized by states?" That sounds just as good as regions. What do you guys think?
|
On August 23 2010 17:58 CoWsGoesMoo wrote: "Teams organized by states?" That sounds just as good as regions. What do you guys think?
That happened with NASPTL I think. The thing with a college league is that it's so easy to meet up and actually get to know other people, and state teams wouldn't really have that kind of feel.

This is only possible if a person is determined to join the college that they want to. Without it, players can join only around spring when they know which college that they were accepted into.

If there isn't enough people, then you should probably go with the alumni idea. However, if we can help it, we should preserve the idea of a collegiate broodwar league, and keep it as students only.

for the alumni thing, we could always restrict the number of alumni per college to (5 - actual college students) or something similar.

Is anyone from Cal here. I'm terrible but I am very interested in this.
I personally think that allowing students to play for a school that they haven't gotten into is bad. Next semester is pushing it, but next year is a no. I mean its not even application season yet and people are deciding which school to go to? What if they get rejected from their top choice? I know I got rejected from my top choice schools. I think alumni will be enough.

From TL alone it seems like phyren, saluber, and DeathByMonkeys would be up for it, and probably nubster as well. Then there's Hosunge (don't think he has TL account) who as far as I know still hasn't switched to BW. Maybe joohyunee too.
I'm fairly certain both allowicious and AcrossFiveJulys have switched completely to SC2, but hey, if it's still just one match a week (or every two) maybe they'd be interested too.
Yeah, there are quite a few TL people that go to Michigan currently

I'm new at UMich, so I may need to search around to figure out who's who there first.

Posting to remind people that the deadline for this is in about a week!
Also looks like we will be allowing alumni and incoming students and merging small teams (based on the will of about 10 people >__> ).
edit: currently 14 teams are signed up but that number is going to shrink when the small teams get put together

All my CSL teammates have jumped ship to SC2 so it's looking like I'm teamless... any team in a western province or state want to take me on? iccup profile

I want to signup, but I'm pretty sure I'm the only one in my college who plays BW. >.> I go to UMass Boston btw.

Signups are going to stay open until September 12th I will put up a thread some time later this week and deal with merging the small teams.
The first week will be 2 weekends later instead of 1 (ie the weekend of the 25th instead of the 18th) in order to give people some time to get their shit together and to give a buffer to deal with any initial issues.

Well No one here at Kent plays SC1 anymore or at least no one has replied. I would like to be merged with a team if possible. =(
If not

I was thinking of sign up for my school only but with the recent trend and idea of putting the City University of New York into one big team (not many people in separate schools who play SC anyway), I figure I would have a CUNY team that consist of all CUNY schools.
+ Show Spoiler +
And since no one made the first step..
City University of New York QuickStriker QuickStriker Idk... 1 is definite which is me...
In the case you are like those CSL organizers and cannot accept the fact CUNY schools cannot be one same team altogether or other different CUNY disagree with my idea... here's my own school..

So I'm thinking 3 is going to be the minimum number of players to aim for per match.
Also; if you know you are going to be a small team (ie only 1 or 2 players) you should look at this thread to see who is geographically near you. Feel free to even begin PM people and agreeing to join up. You should aim to end up with at least 4 people on your team. If a team of 3 players wants to give themselves some more freedom feel free to join with a small nearby team.

Also if you do agree to merge with some team please PM me saying you are doing that and also tell me who your new coordinator is.

if we got a team of 4 and 1 friend from a school nearby, is that merging or just mercing or something?

Absorbing a nearby school that doesn't have enough players is fine. Just please don't merc a ton of random dudes who you have no association with.

Hmmm, I'm sorry there was a mistake with my Iccup ID it's Thratur[OU] instead of [OU]Thratur.
Our team is at 5 members now. Hope to crush you all

I would like to play in this but I know UW is moving to CSL with sc2 and probably expecting me to play in that as well. I've had a hard time balancing playing both games so far.
If any team comes up a player short or something and wants me to fill in (and its ok by the coordinator etc.) then I'd be more than happy to play.
I'd also be willing to help teams practice if they want (as long as they are cool ^^)

In that case, I'll keep on checking if there is anyone interested from that thread to join me into a team. Surely, 3 people can be found easy... hopefully...
