I just got $20 as birthday money and I was thinking of using it to buy a new mouse. The one I have right now is very small. I checked Google Products and Future Shop but there are so many models under $20 these days. So which mouse, under $20, is average sized, and will give me the most out of my money?

Go to a futureshop/best buy or better yet go to like Tiger Direct or something and try out a mouse.

A mouse feel is most important but:

if you really want alot out of your mouse and whatnot in terms of performance and design for about $50ish you can get either a Razer Deathadder or a Logitech G5 (blue). With a few mouse tweaks here and there, you'll get alot of performance.

This will also help in games like counter-strike as well

What games do you play?

I ask because there is no single mouse in the $20 range that is good for all games.

Honestly, for $20 you can get just about any mouse that feels nice for you. But if you want a really nice mouse you should spend a little more. I've been using a Logitech G5 for a few years now, and I've never had issues with it. It feels great and has easily customizable settings to fit your preferences. Also, I've got a friend who uses Razer mice, and he loves them. You won't regret spending a lil extra and getting a good mouse imo, just make sure it feels right for you.

depends on how you grip your mouse, too, I'd say
(ie. palm, fingertip, or claw, etc)

best mouse you'll find under 20 is microsoft intellimouse or opticals.

Be a little wary of "gaming" mice. some might be tailored for something not suited to your taste. SC/BW never required any of the powerful razer/logitech gaming grade mice.

If yo'ure aiming for something a little higher and willing to spend it, the G5 is good if you like that kind of a hugging close palm grip. If you use a fingertip claw grip you'd want something smaller and more standard (razer makes good ones here).

Here are two non-gaming grade mice for each grip style at around 20-30:

Logitech RX1500 (For Claw Grip)
Logitech RX250 (For fingertip/claw grip)

The RX1500 is based of the older MX500 model, which is also the basis for the MX510->MX518->G5 type mice for palmgrip style. It's a laser version updated with newer tech. Razer equiv. would be something like the Imperator.

The RX250 is closer to the G1/G3 line of Logitech mice, better for clawgrip people. Similar to the Razer Diamondback and Krait mice.

The Microsoft Optical mouse is the most basic you get (very hump-shaped type mouse, standard). It's comparable to the Razer Salmosa(the latter has longer buttons and mouseshape, where the buttons bend farther up at the edge).

Although a little higher than $20, the G5 is by far the best mouse out there today.

very true, i have had my G5 for 1.5 years now. i have never regretted buying it. i remember i went into the store looking for the mx510, but the sales guy kept pushing the g5 on me saying how he owns it and it's perfect, DURABLE. and indeed it was, it's still working perfectly fine after 1.5 years of abuse.

it should sell for about 50 or so now, which isnt' bad for a logitech mouse. these things are built to last, and it can last you well past 3 years if you treat it nice. so it's like spending 16-17 bucks a year on a mouse.
(it goes well with the steel series mousepad too)

SC1 only thing that should matter is how it fits your hand, so just go around shops trying different ones and hopefully you'll find one that seems fine to hold in your hand.

SC2 you will have to include things like DPI, forced +/- acceleration and how well the mouse tracks overall and for this you should visit http://www.esreality.com/?a=post&id=1265679 however things like max speed the mouse keeps being accurate on should not matter as much in Starcraft because you're mostly going to play high sensitivity, these things come in to play usually only when you're on extremely low sensitivity.

I myself am using the SteelSeries Kinzu which is a great budget mouse for a high sensitivity gamer, it does suffer from randomish +/- acceleration on low sensitivity so if FPS games are something you're going to seriously play you should probably not consider it.

The Razer Salmosa is widely considered to be the best mouse for Starcraft. Brand new it is $40 at Futureshop/Best Buy, but you can get one for $30 on various sites like Amazon. You can probably get one for $10-$20 on ebay, but personally I wouldn't buy one from Ebay.

The Razer Salmosa is an extremely light mouse that you can move around very quickly. It is ideal for players that use the 'claw grip' rather than the 'palm grip'. I am a 'palm grip' player, and I find the Razer Deathadder to be the best mouse. Although it is heavier, the sheer comfort of it makes it worth it. The Deathadder is $80 in stores, and $60 online.

The intellimouse is definitely the best <$20 mouse, its still better than most 'gaming' mice, and i highly recommend it.

Whats with all the recommendations more than twice his budget? >.<

Most Sc1 progamers use simple Logitech Mini Optical mice. They're light, simplistic and cheap.

http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-930732-0403-Mini-Optical-Mouse/dp/B00006HMPF

They lack extra buttons though, which sucks for general use. I use mouse4 and mouse5 all the time, especially when I'm browsing the internet or talking over VOIP

As an owner of a Razer mouse i STRONGLY recommend a Logitech Mini optical or if you can find it a G1, which will be the next thing i look for when i have the money.
Really i like my Diamondback 3G, Day[9] has one too, but i like the business-like aspect and the simplicity factor. Basically its like iPhone vs Blackberry.

I highly recommend the Logitech Mini Optical. I just got a new one today and it is absolutely amazing. I literally won 10 straight games with the mouse and my gameplay has improved immensely. It's under 20$ too.

A lot of fanboyism here. Don't listen to misinformation like this:

Instead just get the mouse that feels best for you. Depends on what games you play, if it's a low-resolution game then sensors/dpi don't matter shit (imo it doesn't even matter much on high-res games either).

I would advocate a LMO/G1/1.1a but you might not be able to find the former two. Just go with whatever fits your hand best.

I never really thought about it until i read this thread but i guess your grip does matter with what mouse you feel most comfortable with. Like i bought a logitech g1 and honestly not only do i feel i play better with it, since my grip is finger tip i just realized how much i like the texture of the mouse when i use it. It has a very smooth feel to it when i grip it with my finger tips. The most important thing is comfort when you play.

SteelSeries Kinzu was developed in close cooperation with professional gamers to set new standards for performance in optical mice. The Gaming Grade image correlation sensor has been optimized to improve stability and eliminate jitter. The CPI settings are based upon those used and recommended by professional gamers. This compact ambidextrous mouse operates with 9375 Frames Per Second at movement speeds of 50 Inches Per Second and supports customizable polling rate (between 125-1000Hz) with as little as 1 millisecond delay between the mouse and the computer. SteelSeries Kinzu is compact, lightweight, optical and is in a league of its own when it comes to reliability and stability.

SteelSeries Kinzu Optical highlights:

- Ambidextrous lightweight ergonomic finger-tip / palm design

- Slip-resistant coating for superior mouse grip and control

- Gaming Grade optimizations for pro gaming CPI values

- CPI toggle for on-the-fly high & low sensitivity adjustments

- Customizable report rate between 125hz-1000hz / 1 ms response time.

- 3200 Counts Per Inch

- 9375 Frames Per Second

- Acceleration on/off toggle via software

- 50 Inches Per Second and 20G of acceleration

- Low-friction high-performance polyethylene feet

I would also at this time like to thank my sponsor SteelSeries™ for providing me with my Kinzu, for I would not be as great without it!

- Acceleration on/off toggle via software

ADDITIONALLY we decided that if you use anything else but 800 dpi we will add random +/- acceleration and skips at high movement speeds just to fuck with your mind! Congratulations! We also wont update our firmwares to fix this.

That thing aside the Kinzu is a great piece of hardware for its price, too bad I always have to switch to 800 dpi when playing Quake because otherwise the acceleration bugs are terrrrrrible for flick shots.

edit: and LMO has one of the worst sensors of all time so unless SC is everything you do, don't buy it.
