"I really wanted to stop Flash's dual title attempt"

On the 23rd, Yuhuido, Seoul, in the MBC B Hall Virtual Studio at the Nate MSL Finals - the "Tyrant" LEE JAE DONG defeated "The Ultimate Weapon" LEE YOUNG HO to claim his fifth individual league title. Despite the tension caused in the 3rd game's a heater malfunction induced power out resulting in a ruling giving the dong victory, Jaedong overcame Flash 3-1 for the victory. Jaedong said "I sincerely wanted to win, and because it turned out the way I wanted, I'm happy" and "For the next Leessangrok I'd like to play another great series where I'd leave no regrets"

The following is his interview.

- Feelings on winning the MSL?

I really really wanted to win this MSL. I couldn't stand by and watch Flash claim dual titles so I prepared my hardest. Because the results reflect that, I'm happy. Because I wanted this final so badly, I'm so happy I can hardly believe it.

- The maps were very disadvantageous

There was a lot of concern from those around me. It was very stressful and difficult, and in practice I was often discouraged and frustrated. I told everyone I was confident and that map imbalance could be overcome but the stress from practice was very severe. There was the added anxiety of delivering my promises. I practice hard with the mindset to just win one set.
I went in with the mentality -If I lose, I lose but let's at least win one game. I diligently studied Flash's style and with the players and staff's help I was able to win.

- If you were to give Flash an evaluation...

I think he's the greatest player. Whenever I play Flash, it makes me so excited and nervous it feels like my blood is about to boil. Not only is he so skilled, but he is ever adapting and developing. As his rival, I am working hard to not be defeated myself.

- What do you think about the Leessang nickname for you two.

At first I wasn't fond of it, but since it's a nick considered for two great players and I am considered one of them I feel good.

- When the 3rd set was interrupted, how did you go about with mind control.

Coach said that I just had to do what I had to do (-_-;; yup). The people around me helped with mind control. At first I was a little shook but I refocused and just thought about game 4. For game 4 on Fighting Spirit, I did image training and went into the game thinking I had to win.

- You looked really surprised.

I've never had anything like this happen before so I was surprised. I felt really awkward and confused so I coulda been mentally shaken but those around me were a big help in making it possible to re-focus.

- Your impressions of playing in MBC's Virtual Studio

It's adequate for environment for gaming. While I think it's definitely a stage I can showcase the full of my abilities, victory is not the only thing a player wants in the finals. There is a strong desire to stand before the fans, being there live with the fans is preferred and it's regrettable I didn't get to.

- What did you guys say at the award ceremony.

Flash congratulated me a lot. He complemented my skill and I too told him told him not to take this thing too personally or let it get to him.

- Good start to 2010.

I said this in the pre-finals interview also but for this finals I really practiced my hardest and wanted to play games with no regrets. That's how I went into these games and after eventually winning, I've learned hard work won't betray you. I plan on contuing to play hard so I have confidence I will be winning. Not only the MSL but I have amibitions for proleague also. The team is down right now but I want to rise again in proleague. I have desires to sweep all the leagues too. I also want to get most wins for the season.

- If you had to say one thing to your rival Flash

The person who wins this final promised to buy a meal for the other, and during OSL ro8 since Flash won he treated me to a meal. Since I won this time, I'll be buying him a delicious meal. Because we meet so much nowadays, I feel we've gotten friendly. While he's a younger player than I am, I feel there is a lot to learn from Flash.
Even today's games I think we went in with a mindset to enjoy the games. While this time I won and Flash lost, next time we met, I want to play games that will delight the fans.

- Word to the fans?

Before I entered this finals, there was a lot of concern from the fans and there were even fans that were sad over the disadvantageous maps. Seeing them, I made a resolution to win and I got strenght from their support. I am sincerely grateful and I know a lot of them wanted to be here live and that's regrettable. Next time I will stand before a bigger stage so I hope for a lot of support and cheer.

- Fuck yeah. Jaedong!
Controversy or not, I don't think there is much doubt of his ability or place in SC.

Thanks for the interview.

Must've been awkward conducting the interview while avoiding the sensitive subject of G3's decision.

weak interview imo.
It goes way to little into the power outage, the controversy, Flash, Flash's father and team, the way it affected Flash's mindset in game 4.

Jaedong just talks as if it was a normal BO5 that he won. In my opinion he did not deserve it and should have at least added a line like "I feel sorry for fans that got cheated of a real final, yes the referee's decision was advantageous towards me, blablah".

It feels weird to read this, I'm not exactly sure why. I think when they are friendly with each other, Jaedong feels kinda bad to get the 3rd game by a referee decision, but still... I hope they will be friendly with each other in the future.

The only ones that cheated the fans of a real final were Flash's father and the KT team.

This is the real difference why Flash lost and Jaedong won .

I've never had anything like this happen before so I was surprised. I felt really awkward and confused so I coulda been mentally shaken but those around me were a big help in making it possible to re-focus.

While Hwaseung coach said to JD he had to do what he had to do to win . KTF coach and Flash's dad were going berserk at the kespa referee instead of just helping Flash regain focus ...

seriously…but what do you expect? Fomos generally goes out of its way to avoid good reportage on interesting/controversial/newsworthy issues that the BW fanbase cares about.

Edit: woop, had to delete the part of your quote that I don't agree with

If Jaedong would say something like that, something that he felt cheated out of a real final.

I would changed my logo and put him as my FPL leader. Support support. Hahas.
He will be my hero if he says something for his rival.

Wrong, it was MBC/Kespa/whoever was in charge of the 3rd set decision. Not because of the decision they made, but because they actually allowed Flash's dad and coaches to come and argue about for nearly an hour while Flash had to sit and stew in it all making it increasingly harder for him to clear his mind for the next game.

When a ref. makes a critical call in a crucial situation like that then no matter what the call actually is, once it's been made there must not be left any room for doubt about whether or not it might be overturned. The fact that they didn't deal with it more swiftly is what ruined the finals.

Jaedong was stuck in deep space the whole time this is happening. You can't really blame him.
It's not like he has some vendetta against MBC here. He just pocketted 40k thx to them.
The lack of a crowd was MBC's fault. The power out I'd bitch at MBC too, and the decision had to be made by KeSPA between their two thumbs up options. I think they did the right thing. It just happens to be the best game of the series and only one of the craziest ZvT's in recent times.

I think Jaedong is stronger mentally because he's been in so many finals before and he came back 0-2 to beat fantasy. If the power out affected him as much as he said it did, imagine what it did to Flash.

Honestly, this comforts me a little. As much as I wanted Flash to win, seeing JD acting as gracious and honest as he did here makes me think that, although the governing bodies (KeSPA and MBC) might be seriously borked, at least the players are well-mannered, friendly, and intelligent. This interview (along with the supporting evidence) makes me think JD really deserved to win

no i think it's the right decision to focus on the series and all of the other stuff, not on this incident. personally I think this incident has received too much attention and not enough credit is being given to Jaedong for his amazing play and his deserved title. the way people are reacting and talking about this is really starting to annoy me.

what is all this "real final" bullshit. it was a real final, the games were real, jaedong really won it what the fuck. just because MBC ran it very poorly and screwed up big time doesn't mean the match wasnt "real" or the match shouldn't count. jaedong really won game 1, flash really won game 2, game 3 was clearly going to be won by Jaedong, anyone who understands starcraft and watches that footage carefully up until the blackout can see that. And jaedong really did win game 4, although it's unfortunate flash's play may have been effected by the emotional stress, it's still a deserved win. how can you people say he did not deserve to win and the final wasnt real or legit.

Great play by JD though. These two had better meet up again in OSL Finals.

Its a reasonably good interview, I don't think Jaedong would have had a great opinion on set 3, the power dieing wasn't his fault, and I don't think there is a man on TL who would say that either player had no chance of taking the title, and at the end of the day, a win is a win.

What impressed me the most about the two of them afterwards was how well Flash took it, and this interview confirms that. Flash has his priorities right, and I doubt he will slump as a result of this.

Congrats to JD too although I do think this final was too exceptional in its proceedings to make me convinced that JD was the one who would have won it here under normal circumstances.

All together now: Jaedong Fighting!

Can't believe how great he plays. 22:11 predicted against him - and still he came out on top. This is a Bonjwa if I ever saw one.

Thanks for the translation . . .and best of luck to JD and Flash

ROFL

Jaedong went into the finals with the mindset of winning ONE SINGLE GAME.
According to himself Jaedong was not prepared to take down Flash, yet he did. Practice games must be sooo different compared to live ones.

I guess JD's play dropped like 10% and Flash's 30% compared to practice games. Jaedong's real strength is really his mental fitness.

No... he mentioned that a lot.

And since Bisu's mere mentioning of maps is bitching (according to general consensus), JD seems to bitch a lot about the maps.

Exactly, that's what makes a final. The excitement in the air, the epicness of it is what makes starleague finals so awsome. I really hope they drop this virtual studio crap.

I liked games one and two. I think I'll watch them over some time.

Also, can I make a request for an interview with Flash? Actually now I'm scared. If flash rages over mbc or thinks that there should be a better option for power failures in the future, it could rise into a major(er) flame war.

Am i the only one that thought the virtual studio was a good idea?

Sure its not as good for the couple hundred in the audience, but you have to admit, it is far better for broadcast. The crazy moon room thing looked pretty professional and i thought it was a great venue for the show.

Take the hint, MBC...

Right after kespa gave the game to Jaedong, the entire KT team and Flash's dad specifically raised hell and threatened to forfeit and leave. Kespa threatened to kick them all out or punish them or something. The whole ordeal delayed game 4 for like a whole hour. It was a complete debacle.

I don't think it's better for broadcast at all. There's a reason we've moved beyond isolating two players in a room... If anything, this virtual studio thing was a trip backwards in time rather than progress forward. What made it any different from the finals a decade ago?

Pretty much the only thing missing from this MSL were the fog machine and the ridiculous costumes, otherwise we'd be right back where we started in 2000 at the beginning of professional Starcraft.

JD is the legend killer. He's managed to defeat the unforgivable curses one by one; the OGN curse, now the Kim Carrier curse. All he needs to do now is break the Greater Spire curse. In game 2 he was close. I don't think he played his best in game two so this gives me hope for his future ZvT. It's gonna be monstrous. I'm glad JD has flash to inspire him to get even better and better.

This, given the relatively softball questions FOMOS is known for, is actually a really great interview.

I dont think Jaedong couldve answered better here, and its good to know Flash and him are on good terms. In fact, I think Flash had a LOT less of a problem with the decision to give Jaedong a game he basically won than with the HUGE uproar that his coaches and father caused.

I read that Flash congratulated JD for the victory. Though I would love to hear more from him on the matter. KT and Flash deserve to voice their opinion on the decision.

I can't really blame Flash's father, I mean, parents can get emotional like that. It's a natural thing to do. KT's actions though, shouldn't have happened.

I think both Flash's father and KT's reaction was understandable (although ultimately improper). I don't think I need to explain why Flash's father would go berserk, but for KT, it's also their job to do what they can to try to secure their name on the championship so I'm sure it was probably their job to argue in that kind of situation. What I don't understand, however, is how long it was allowed to go on. It should have been shut down immediately and the event should have moved on at some reasonable pace.

In other sports, it's natural for coaches or managers to argue if just to make some sort of symbolic statement and more often than not, they are quickly removed. I don't get why this was allowed to go on and on...

i'm still amazed on how he could turn the tables in difficults maps for ZvT

And i'm pissed MBC took the clear victory from him, flash fans will always wonder if things would go different had the 3rd game not ended like it ended

Jaedong did the right thing and talked to Flash and told him that it was complete bullshit and don't worry about it.

Gratz to jaedong. 3 OSL and 2 MSL. One more MSL and he ties nada. DAMN.

Oh, what happened with Flash's dad? Like what did he do exactly? I completely missed the finals.

I wasnt home today, can somebody tell me what Flash's dad did? Ive been looking through the different articles but have only seen it mentioned here and there, not any specifics on what he did

Anyways, congrats to Jaedong, im surprised he won and completely think he deserves it. Looking over some of the analysis of game 3 it sure seems like he had a major advantage, i think it would have been wrong to declare a re-do. Plus, he still beat Flash 2 games to 1 not even counting that, though i suppose the case can be made that Flash was thrown off as a result of what happened. Still, major props to Jaedong... what a beast

I'm pretty sure he said in an earlier interview (semifinals maybe?) that he was going to mainly just practice with Hiya. Which would mean that Hiya has been practicing TvZ with Jaedong just about nonstop for the past 2 weeks...

I'm looking forward to his next TvZ.

I was kind of annoyed/angry about Game 3 and how Jaedong got the win over Flash. But after reading this, it makes me feel a lot better about the whole situation. Sure Flash lost, but these guys are friends and there should be no hard feelings over any of this. Flash won a title, Jaedong won a title; these two can go back to their pro-gaming houses content and ready to dominate the scene after a few days off lol.

weak interview imo.

A lot of other people I'm sure commented on this. I don't want to go through all that and pick apart everything said. But I'll say this:

You're treatment of JD is misdirected anger. We got cheated out of a good series, but it was not JD who cheated us. All JD could do was play his best. And unfortunately, Flash was affected much more by what happened than JD was. But that's not JD's fault.

JD handled the interview the best way possible. He did not dwell on the tragedy of the power outage. He spoke highly of Flash's skill and reaffirmed their friendship (or did you miss the part where he promised to treat Flash to a meal? -_-).

If anyone is obligated to apologize, it's MBC. Not Jaedong.

While this time I won and Flash lost, next time we met, I want to play games that will delight the fans.
this is so great to hear. it is really heartwarming, especially after a day of reading those 50 blogs, topics, polls, and write-ups about game3.

I guess it's because they know this won't be the last time they clash against one another. Unlike some really fanatatical fans who wanted to place some kind of "final face-off for the domination of the universe" title over this series. There's no satisfying these people. They just want to see what they desire, and thanfully both Jaedong and Flash are above that kind of childish fantasy.

Who cares about bonjwa-hood when both Jaedong and Flash can sweep trophy after trophy, occasionally getting in each other's way in the years to come? Like Jaedong said, this one victory over Flash isn't be-all-end-all for him. It's the same for Flash. Their mutual respect for each other goes beyond the "OMG JAEDOG WAS RAPED 0-2 WHICH MEANS FLASH IS BETTER THAN HIM FOREVA!" or "OMG JAEDONG RAPED FLASH ON TERRAN IMBA MAPS... NOTHING CAN CHANGE THE HEIRACHY BETWEEN THE TWO NOW!". Which is more than I can say for some of their fans.
