I've been quite the peruser of TL.net over the past two years. Being one of the only decent sites in English about the scene as a whole, I jumped head in to the wealth of strategy and information. That being said, I'd like to note that I play mainly for fun. Yes, I'd love to improve, but if I'm not enjoying the game I play, I might as well do something else.

That being said, I'm currently a low D bordering on D- Zerg.

Things that I have improved on:

-My Zerglings no longer run in a straight line towards doom.

-My building hotkeys actually work

-I've come to understand the strategic mindset with timings and "units with purpose."

The last one has had the most impact on my playstyle.

In both ZvP and ZvT, I've developed a sort of solid mindset of decisions throughout the game.

The primary bulk of damage comes from Zerglings and/or Hydralisks. Based on unit types and the opposing player's choices, you select one to remain the larger portion of your attack force.

Larger, "bulkier units," serve more so as meat shields and support. This isn't to say they don't do any damage, but they will not be doling out the larger portion of it. These units are Guardians (rarely, but still counted), Ultralisks, and Lurkers. They allow tactical ground control.

Other units provide support to control ground. Defilers set up safe zones for a push, devourers soften up air units, scourge deter aerial assaults, and queens (also rarely in play) also shift in to help take ground.

It's with this mindset that I've come to see how to play the game.

At the D-/D level, support units can make a huge difference if used the right way. More often than not, games are won or lost because of the proper use (or lack thereof) of support units. It's at this level that understanding the purpose of each unit comes into play.

However, with a lack of solid mechanics, it's best to first understand what can be done in place of "super micro."

The ultraling combo has won me every game so far. I don't believe it's a "Do this and you win" type of strategy, but I think it's the one thats showed me how to effectively use each unit. I've felt a more confident sense of gameplay now, and coordinating my units doesn't take as much thought.

Still, being 6-17 on IcCup means I've got a long way to go.

Ultralisks are so easy to mass and so easy to micro, just like carriers. :O

So wrong. Neither are easy to mass because they both cost a lot. Carriers aren't easy to micro because you need to have good control or else you lose them all and it's gg. Ultras aren't that difficult to micro but they're basically the same difficulty as every protoss unit.

It's not the concept of massing that works. It's "grouping" that I learned.

IE: You can't easily 1a2a3a it to victory. Setting them in the right ratios and groupings helps a lot more.

I am talking about mechanical demand. Clicking your stargates 6 times -> 12 carriers or control selecting 12 larvae and morphing ultras is easy.

And carriers are easy to micro. That is unless the opponent does proper goliath micro, which even then is still harder than the proper carrier micro.

Every half decent player will probably tell there's not enough emphasis in the world to put on how much you need to improve your mechanics. You should throw minimal regard, for the moment, to strategy and timing.

Learn some basic builds inside out, and repeat them into oblivion. Iccup stats is just a number, mere digits that in no way reflect one's true skill.

Only after gaining good mechanics will you be able to learn and play the game at the higher levels (C+), and then the time for strategy and timing will come. Most new players, when succumbing to the frustration of continued losses actually quit the game because their mechanics never allowed them to be on a good starting ground for learning strategy and tactics.

Good luck, I like your mindset and analysis of the Zerg units' purposes

ultralisks are the shit, but you won't have as much fun turtling for gas as you will get aggressive with fast defilers

The thing about zerg is your economy imo After you mastered that, you can bend zerg to your will

For me it was more important to do something. Economy is very important but I think " doing something " with your units is more important.

The important thing about Zerg is that you have to learn you can't win battles without flanking. Not before defilers anyway.
