dont. lvl 10 is enough if you don't have gear.
Get dalon+deathSentry take care of your dex, pump for good blocking It's still pretty tough because assassin is frail, but if you get enough crushing blow shits go down fast.
fishynercro is best, i have one currently act5 on NM atm, sitting about lvl 60
I solo'd up to hell with a firesorc. True you can't go past act 1 in hell but it's fun up until that...
The most fun solo characters that i've tried are
Pokeazons - Amazons but you can only use two handed spear-esque weapons! Runners - Assassin with max BoS. Focus on getting faster run/walk gear barbarians in general

I really don't like Median, it feels really cheap, as if a group of thirteen year olds and a programmer sat down and started every idea with, "OMG, d'you what would be awesome?"
As far as your question, every class is perfectly capable of soloing Normal & Nightmare, it's Hell that will give you trouble. I think the best choice for soloing the entire game from scratch is a wind druid or a hammerdin paladin.

I feel like a hammerdin without any real gear would be in real trouble until.. well, all the time. Before hammer is at a decent level, you'll have to whack shit to death which means would suck and even after hammer is maxed, I feel like mana, cast rate, and dps would be a problem

I thought the same until I did the same thing as the TC. I had a friend who had never played D2, so I got him into it and in turn, I hooked myself once again. This time however we played single player on /players 8 and played LAN when we wanted to do quests together, which wasn't often. Up until level 25 the hammers weren't useful, but at that point the game, your Act2 mercenary with a pike does most of the work anyway, especially with concentration. It comes into it's own very quickly and mana wasn't much of a problem either. You keep eight slots for health pots and eight for mana, it's not a problem really.
By the beginning of nightmare I had already made an insight weapon for my merc and from then on mana wasn't much of a problem. Same applies with wind druids. I got both to 76 and hell difficulty before I called it quits.
