that is japanese hirgana script around the border. dude, if you wanna learn chinese. i mean, learn it. you dont watch movies... that is passive. you have only one option and that is to move to china or live in an environment where your survival depends on you actively listening, speaking, and thinking. having a girlfriend helps, but not if you are the only two chinese speakers around. move to beijing, where the best and most standard mandarin is spoken, with your background you can be competent in two years or so. also, why would you want to learn taiwanese? it is not pleasant sounding and only around 25 million speak it. unless you just want to live in chinese taipei you should learn mandarin. with a grasp of english and mandarin chinese (two most widely spoken languages) you can communicate with almost anyone in the world. i moved to beijing with about 3 years of mandarin background from college. i am white so no chinese family or anything like that but did have real chinese friends growing up whihc influenced me. granted, i am talented with sounds, music, and languages, etc and am interested in learning so it is easier for me than other tasks. learning a language is not simple and demands a certain mindset. you cannot look at it as a task to be overcome but rather must tap into the cultural subconscious of the place whose language you want to know. basically if you are serious then do something about it. but dont ask people for movie recommendations if you really want to "learn" chinese. there are so many programs through school or teaching that can have you in china. its easy and you can get paid, visit this wonderful place, get a real chinese woman, and learn your mother tongue. He didn't 'learn' the language, he 'acquired' it. So for him picking up more fluency does not have to mean going to a classroom. Which unless the class is a really advanced class, most of the Chinese he would learn would be deemed uncommon and not flexible. I acquired my language as a child; there are certain words I don't know like maybe deodorant or chord... just random words. However, my speaking, listening ability is at native level. Watching movies that are interesting are good ways for someone who has acquired a language, we can watch it and understand what the meaning of the word used was, whereas a non-native learner would most likely have to look it up. The point here is we are able to hear these words we don't know one after the other and remember them, foreign learners have to do a one or a couple at a time before they forget what the context for them even was. ^_^ Environment helps a lot, but it's like taking a 7 year old English speaker who is already fluent to a point, watching movies would fill in the gaps for vocab he doesn't know and learning the trend of how to say things (fluency).. I'm a linguistics major so that's my source. Chinese classes could help, but think about it, it's like a native English speaker taking English Comp II just to learn some new words minus modern style speaking. F91 ftw!

They speak clearly and the show is interesting to keep you watching it. This. On May 17 2009 10:32 N.sL)_CreeD wrote: The easiest way is to just get a Taiwanese girlfriend man... ![]() and This. But seriously, first step is interest... and if you really are interested, you'll push yourself to learn it more. I was at like your level probably a year ago..... and then I discovered that show 超級星光大道, which basically made me interested in all things taiwanese, including KTV (another very good way of learning haha). and then from there, I just made a lot of fobby friends that normally would converse in mandarin, and it helped me A LOT. The main thing is that you gotta use it. If you don't use the language in your every day life, you'll drop it so fast. Also, I'm taiwanese, and imo, the main reason you shouldn't want to learn taiwanese is that it flat out isn't used that much. If you go to taiwan, and a store owner talks to you in taiwanese, just ask them to speak in mandarin instead, and they'll switch. (btw, my taiwanese is pretty bad, but I can understand it if someone speaks it to me)

Plus I can understand almost everything viet people talk about even if I can't speak with the same range of vocabulary they are using. I don't see anything wrong with watching movies to learn a language. It builds up your interest in learning the language like phase said. And if nothing else your listening skills go up and you can enjoy the movies in their original language more.
