Shit has hit the fan ladies and gentlemen. I got an email from the Chancellor of UCR (i know i suck to go there) saying there are cases in the city so if you have flu symptoms then stay home and quarantine. Excellent on my half because i dont have it. I think some people though are blowing it out of proportion. Like the Egyptians, there was no evidence of them having the flu but if you read here, they decided to kill their entire population of pigs, a quarter of a million just went to hell. I know one thing for sure, I'm gonna be wearing my out of date and surely expired gas mask to school until this whole thing blows over and i will order a NBC (Nuclear Biological Chemical) suit from my good friend fatass. I learned reading even more that if even more shit hits the fan and goes out of control, the school will close until further notice, which is ok in my book. And now the big question: "Who Fucked Up?"

It's only in BC, hasn't reached Alberta yet. Hopefully all this damn cold (weather) will do us some good, and help ward off the stupid flu.

I'm not too worried, I don't live in a major population center and I don't fuck pigs (I'm not sure if anyone here watches the PhillyD show). Sounds like the shit really is hitting the fan though.

By the way, I would wear one of these: https://www.autoloandaily.com/images/stories/bubbleboypic.jpg

@ OP:

That last time there was a true flu pandemic, it killed in 1-2 years a comparable number of people as the bubonic plague did in 10 years. It also targeted young healthy people rather than just old people and babies. So 20 years-olds would get sick then be dead a day or 2 later.

I think some people though are blowing it out of proportion.

Humans should have a healthy respect for disease. It has whooped our butts too many times in the past for us to not take it seriously.

Read up on this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1918_flu_pandemic

Now, we don't know if this will be a pandemic like that one, but we better make sure we are taking seriously from the very beginning just in case.

we are fucked, obama doesn't want to secure our borders, seriously wouldn't be surprised if this completely broke out and kills millions, every other country seems to be taking precautions, but not the USA government.. we welcome illegal aliens that have this pig flu with open arms.

14th century world pop: 500 million
1918 world pop: 2 billion

Travel was much faster in 1918 as well, leading to faster spreading of the disease.

I wouldn't even know where to get one around here to be completely honest. The pharmacies here have never sold them really, I'd have better luck just picking up some Tamiflu. Also I could just buy, you know, water for if I get sick. Americans never treated Flu as something to avoid, we act reactively to it instead of proactively and just deal with it as we got it.

lol that makes perfect sense, the fucking flu came from mexico. if you read anything on epidemics the first thing you want to do is control the source of it, it's just going to get worse and worse if nothing is controlled. And you pretty much proved my point, the CDC is the government.

swine flu isn't anymore deadly than a regular flu left untreated (because there is no cure for swine flu)

most people here I am guessing are young adults in good health so it shouldn't be much of a concern

I think the point is that an organization created for the purpose of disease control and that is staffed with trained and educated professionals is 1000x more qualified to say whether closing our borders would make a difference than a random person on the internet.

Because clearly the health issue is the only issue at work here?

Shutting down an entire border is a major decision that can have other ramifications. Obviously it takes more than the basic knowledge of epidemiology (which the CDC has obviously considered), to decide whether its the right thing to do.

Have you even considered the impact of closing the border, politically, economically and socially? There's a fine line between precaution and overreaction.

This is definitely true. I almost included a sentence about how the world population was very different between the 2 time periods in my post.

But I do think that people forget how horrible the Spanish Flu really was. We talk a lot about wars killing a lot of people (think about all the news a little war like our invasion of Iraq got) and yet, at least in my school, we hardly talked about the Spanish Flu at all. That just seems weird to me.

quoting you on that so i can bring it up later and...

the offical word from the CDC is that closing down our borders won't do jack shit

lol that makes perfect sense, the fucking flu came from mexico. if you read anything on epidemics the first thing you want to do is control the source of it, it's just going to get worse and worse if nothing is controlled. And you pretty much proved my point, the CDC is the government.

I think the point is that an organization created for the purpose of disease control and that is staffed with trained and educated professionals is 1000x more qualified to say whether closing our borders would make a difference than a random person on the internet.

yeah you're a genius, this isn't just me saying this, there are hundreds of people including politicians saying this. seriously READ ANYTHING ON Epidemiology. then let's see if you still agree with that side

Have you even considered the impact of closing the border, politically, economically and socially? There's a fine line between precaution and overreaction.

lol this is such socialist thinking it makes me sick, so you would rather have the chance of millions of people dieing for the sake of other political reasons that aren't as extreme?

A) Realize we're in the middle of an economic shitstorm. What do you think happens to all trade with Mexico if we shut down our border? Closing borders is a last second resort that you don't fuck with unless you're damn sure that it's worth it
B) For the love of god, learn what the fuck socialism is

do you realize that we actually get a lot of important medical products from mexico? do you realize that ONE person has died from this in our country - and it was a mexican infant?

but no, you're right - let's close the border to one of our greatest trading partners despite the fact that the flu has already clearly lept the border. let's just think of some wild, hysterical reason to justify your bizarre agenda.

this is so blown out of proportion it makes me sick. fox news had a headline the other day : "The Next Black Death?"

Yeah, fox, the black death - we're at 1 person dead now. when we're approaching 50% of the population dying then we can talk about the black death, okay?

I'm obviously aware that it's not that big of a deal right now(in death numbers), but it doesn't matter how many people have died from it, what matters is how big it can become and how many people currently have it; theres way more then 1 person taht has it in the US, and yes I do agree with you that some media have blown it out of proportion but that's only because nothing has really been done about it to prevent a complete blow out, and alot of this can come from illegal aliens such as mexicans crossing the border.

104 people have it in the usa

in what way does this justify closing the border to one of our greatest trading partners? and, additionally, how can you say "I do agree with you that some media have blown it out of proportion" and at the same time advocate closing the border? clearly you must agree with those in the media that are being apocalyptic about this.

the world's a playground. you know that when you're a kid, but somewhere along the way everyone forgets it.

I agree with them to an extent but not completely, they're headlines are to scare people, I'm not trying to scare anyone but just trying to make a point that shit can get bad without any1 realizing, and if it does get bad 1 of the reasons will be because we didn't close down the borders and take necessary precautions like other countrys have.

Except the government obviously DOES realize it. The CDC didn't choose not to close the border out of laziness, or idiocy, but because they legitimately weighed the consequences of closing the door to Mexico, and deemed that the costs outweighed the benefits. You can say you don't agree with their decision, but by no means is it dumb. Their priorities may be different from yours, but that doesn't make them stupid or insensitive.

and if it doesnt get bad will you admit that you were wrong and your plan would have extremely negative consequences? and if it doesnt go as badly as you are saying - and the consensus is that it will not - will you admit that your plan is hysterical?

Could this constant barrage of sensationalist media stories about this flu perhaps be a good thing for the economy? Get people out of their "money saving" attitude and back into their fear-induced spending!

CDC actually never considered closing the border, apparently they are not a bunch of retards who would think of shutting borders down to a flu.
Also you explaining things to someone who claims hundreds of thousands will die in the US. Come on, guy probably posting in this thread
