This may come across as a waste of time to you, but I just needed someplace to put my thoughts...

Isn't it weird how in over half the games you join, someone's asking you "korean?" or "where you from?".

Is this some sort of new stereotype that we're going to see now? Is every korean assumed a good player? Of course, I knew people expected koreans to be good in the past, but this is the 1st time it had actually gotten to me.

What's with people and their expectations of Koreans to be all super gosu? I have around 10 friends that play sc and they are all korean, but I have beaten 8 of them, one I have only played once, and the other one I have beaten only three times (Actually once was when he accidently just left in the middle of typing something), but he beat me a lot. (He said he had to play Nony 1st round in the TSL owned =P, but he also said he tried harder than when he plays me and stretched the game out to 30 minutes. He had around 230 apm that game or somethin, compared to 120 when he plays against me =P)

Why do people ask "korean?" anyway? It's even easier to lie on the internet and type "no" than it is to say it in person.

So now that people are doing this, should we start to expect someone asking "are you african american?" whenever they play a basketball game? Just because SOME of them are good at basketball? Are we going to ask "are you chinese?" for a math contest? Just because SOME of them are good at math? Are we going to ask "are you a lawyer or doctor?" when we see someone with a big house? Just because SOME of them are rich? Most people wouldn't. The reason people say it for StarCraft is because of the internet. But what if people were in an internet cafe? And lets just say they couldn't tell if they were korean or not? Would they ask? Or would they just not play against them, fearing they'd lose? All this is because of the internet, acting like a shield to them, they feel they can be as racist, and obnoxious as they want? Wow.

You can check any StarCraft Progamer VOD on youtube, and you'll see at least one comment that says something like "korean nerds" or "nerds" or "asian nerds", hell i've even seen someone say "Japanese nerds". But what's funnier is the fact they somehow got to that video =P. I've never before in my life seen a Starcraft Video on youtube until I started playing, so I wonder how they would've stumbled upon it...

People have to notice that not all koreans are good at starcraft. it's just because the practice a lot there. If people in the United States challenged Koreans to basketball, football, they'd obviously lose. That is because kids practice those a lot. In korea, kids practice starcraft a lot. So to those people who expect all koreans to be so UbEr 1337 GoSu, notice that they're not born with this ability; they just had the role models and practice.

The thing is, Koreans are so good not only because of practice, but of what a big thing StarCraft is in Korea. They have E-Sports, when in the USA for me, people think of starcraft as a 10 year old game that people for some reason still play. If any other country had an E-Sports as large as Korea (I dont really know how to phrase that =P), I bet people would be prejudiced against that country too. But why? Just because they don't want to lose? So what if they reach C level by playing D-? Then what? Will they continue playing D- noobs that make 5 probes, 1 gate in their main and 2 gates proxy? Do they expect that to work, as anyone can check their record and see "WOW THEY PLAYED ALL D- NOOBS"

It was like in the UC Berkley SC 101 course. The teacher guy (=P) said something about Boxer vs Garimto (I think it was that) where if Boxer one, progaming would be popular in Korea, and if Garimto won, progaming would be popular all over the world. Think about that. If Boxer had lost that game, what would we be like now? Would we all have started Starcraft a few years earlier? Would there still be all these noobs trying to play people who aren't as good as them? Of course, we might not have the korean commentators yelling "GEEEEEEEEEEEEE GEEEEEEEEEEEEE", but I sometimes wonder what would've happen.

I bet the main reason this annoyed me was that I had finally "mastered" (Used) the 5 fact push (found in stylish's thread) against the friend I beat twice (2nd win) and I wanted to try it out against more people on iccup, and it's hard for me to join ICCup games because most of them either get filled up too fast or they have latency. And the 1st game I can join, Boom. He's a D+ player asking for D/D- noobs and making sure they're not korean.

Oh well, back to trying to find a Protoss to play on ICCup, and btw, advice for all you guys:

Maybe it's because like a quarter of my losses comes from funny Korean dudes with 300+ APM who for some reason unknown to me, love to join D and D+ games, only to stomp me after 15 minutes..

This.

But really OP: Maybe its the fact that its a popular game in korea and the majority of people who play the game are korean and good.

But not everybody's good that's korean. Everyone had to start somewhere. And anyway, if you do play a 300 apm korean, steal their strats =P and later when you get to Bish level, then go make a smurf account and own some koreans that think you suck.

It's like what everyone says. Play people who are better than you, but nobody seems to want to play Koreans. Yet people want the best schools, best quality of goods, and yet they don't want the best quality opponents to learn from.

Ah I had this korean guy ask where i was from. I said usa and he said China......THEN I look at his icc profile and he's a godam korean. I really haven't had many people I get outplayed against so far unless it's a korean. Otherwise foreigners are pretty nooby I guess it just depends who I play

idc if my opponents are korean. I'm a shitty player and I sometimes beat Koreans at my rank.
My little brother just started playing on icc and beat the first Korean he played. Korea has loads of good players, but at lower levels they are just like the rest of the world...

To answer your first q, my experience is that when the other person asks "korean?" or "from?" that other person is a korean. I guess the other person would proceed to talk in their language if I answered yes. Then us foreigners tried to imitate them without understanding this point, for reasons such as enjoyment and just knowing your opponent. You could probably meet a new friend if you realize your opponent lives in the same city as you. But of course, some just choose to not answer at all.

Please ur proper grammer...I had to read that like 5 times to understand what you were saying. I corrected it from what I thought you were trying to say. It only takes like 3 seconds to press Enter and say your from USA though. I usually answer when my probe is being made so I don't have to screw anything up when I type it.

I have to admit I hate going into an iccup game and my opponent asks, Where you from? or you Korean?

What difference does it make... If I say Yes to the korean thing as a joke they will leave game sometimes lol.

If I say no they underestimate me, dont play as hard and eventually get pissed and dont say GG.

I just dont say anything now except for "talk after game". Which makes them leave games sometimes...

I never ask what race someone is, when I'm on iccup I dont ask them shit unless they raped me and I ask what weakness they may have seen, what I may do to try improve my play from their point of view.

IMO: In Iccup game, Say GG nothing else... dont ask me where I'm from. Dont ask me my race(if you didn't see me pick which i did, your an idiot) I dont want to talk to you... If im not in the channel all I want to hear from you is GG or Sugo

dude... my grammar wasnt even that bad in terms if sentence structure. the only thing you fixed were spelling mistakes.

and you made a mistake yourself... dont make those kinds of grammar police posts online. im not trying to impress anyone. im just trying to get a message across as easily and as quickly as possible.

Isn't it weird how in over half the games you join, someone's asking you "korean?" or "where you from?".

I don't see the problem about asking where someone is from. Every game I play I usually end up asking the person where they are from and their highest ICC rank. I don't really care I'm just trying to make conversation. I know your satirical analysis would assume that everyone is asking it just to be scared and leave but some people just like to talk bro.

Is this some sort of new stereotype that we're going to see now? Is every korean assumed a good player? Of course, I knew people expected koreans to be good in the past, but this is the 1st time it had actually gotten to me.

I have around 10 friends that play sc and they are all korean, but I have beaten 8 of them, one I have only played once

I don't see whats new, people have always stereotyped and I don't think its ever going to end. Koreans have been believed to be very good at games for a long time now, it didn't start "just now". Just because it has just gotten to you doesn't mean the world around you doesn't exist =/.

Why do people ask "korean?" anyway? It's even easier to lie on the internet and type "no" than it is to say it in person.

Because there are people that avoid players who would possibly be better then them in order to win more of their games. This is the same way a D player may avoid people with clan tags of reasonably good clans such as sMi, gns.i, GuN, etc. Having the tag doesn't mean you are good or even in the clan, but it has a greater possibility of you being good so iccup people who care that much about wins will avoid you. If you've played D ranks on ICC longer then a week you'd already know that shitty players will try anything(besides getting better and learning standard game, of course) to get wins.

Wow.

I don't know what type of sheltered world you live in, but I have plenty of black/asian friends and sterotypes come out and they really aren't a big deal. Sure the occasional "fuck im not going to play basketball with him" "hey help me with my math buddy" "yeah but he'd wreck you at starcraft" jokes come out but in general they are usually non harming and if anything positive. If you joined an ICC game and someone, without seeing your stats and only your identity, said "you are too good I'm afraid to play you because you will probably win" and kicked you, you would probably laugh and be proud that you are recognized as a good player.

Youtube != the internet. There will always be ignorant comments from people who dont understand, look at ANY video with more then 1k views. Also there are people who spend 5+ hours a day on youtube watching videos and writing comments and who knows what they'd stumble upon.

Do they expect that to work, as anyone can check their record and see "WOW THEY PLAYED ALL D- NOOBS"

Most of the people who have the view "every single korean is better then every single american" at games probably play little to no competitive gaming and their input is really meaningless. Nobody honestly thinks that every korean is amazing and its extremely ignorant to have that viewpoint.

I agree with shitty people who care about records, but its pretty off topic. Shitty people will always be record whores.

I already explained these types of people and before they used to anger me but really think about it. Playing D to D+ nets you an extra 25 points with a 12~ point smaller cushion if you lose, so you average maybe an extra 18 points per game by playing people 1 rank higher. If this is unacceptable to you, dont do it. If you want to play people above your level but think its gay for D+ people to look for D's, keep in mind that they are worse then all other D+ normal players , so the 18 extra points you earn per game will go up considering you will win more against these types of players.

~~ sorry for the long rant but I pretty much strongly disagree with almost everything you posted.

Yep, and I'm on the worse end of this joke I mean, you would think that towards the end of the season, ICCUP has kind of come to order, as in D players playing against D players, better players having risen to their respective rank and so on. But for some reason, I find myself going up against people who definitely are higher than D or D+.. Silly Korean gosus, D ranks are not for you!

what are you talking about?

Yes, please elaborate. I kinda want to know what's going on too.

In the Videos of the UC Berkley starcraft course, the guy mentioned this game with Boxer vs Garimto and how it could either open the progaming scene to koreans (if boxer one) or worldwide (if garimto won)

like he said, "Obviously we know who won"

It has nothing to do with race, it's just that Korea, ie. the country has a much better competitive environment for SC than the rest of the world, so it's natural to expect players from there to be better. It's not a prejudice or stereotype, it's just fact.

well the main reason I ask is just to gauge the amount of language barrier with the opponent. I also ask a few other things like age etc. just to get an idea of who i'm playing and to maybe throw off their build slightly by them wasting time typing lol.
..and then I would, ya know, check em'. (Aka SpoR)
