finally, after many long months of frustratingly being stuck at D+, I reached C-!
This season was particularly frustrating for me. A few seasons ago (around season 6 or so), I reached C- by some miraculous fluke... here's what i have to say about it:
at that time (about august 2008), I was a worse player than I am right now in many ways. I would consider 150-160 APM games very good games, whereas now I play normally at 160-170 APM. I don't know how I even got C- then (it was only for like.. 2 games), but I was FAR better this season than I was back then. I have superior game sense, far superior macro, better control, better timing.... I just dont get it.
However, I initially had trouble pushing past early D+ this season.. I hit D+ about 3 weeks or so into the season after there was some semblance of settling down in terms of higher level players clearing D-dom. However, I seemed UNABLE to penetrate into mid and high D+. Literally, every other game I played would be some sort of C or higher player upping a new account or just smurfing.
I DID contribute to me being stuck at lower D+... I always asked for re versus superior C+/B- ish players, like some guys from wD) clan. That hurt my score, but I took it with good attitude and used these chances as opportunities to learn a thing or two from high level players. I don't feel too much of a difference from doing this, but I guess it's the thought that counts?
Also, my FUCKING WIRELESS INTERNET contributed to my D+ stasis. My fucking piece of shit wireless adapter LOVES to randomly cut off while I'm doing stuff... and during starcraft is no exception. So basically, if its been 2+ minutes and my wireless decides to die on me, then I can expect to lose 50 points.... so fucking annoying, not to mention kids accuse you of drophacking (even though they get points off of me T_T)
but anyways... so for some reason, I began winning a bunch of games starting yesterday... to the point where i was 2700-2800, and I was like "OMG IM SO CLOSE".
I have to say, I did cheat a bit by pwning 2 D level players, but I feel that my C- is totally legitimate considering HOW OFTEN i re'd superior C and higher players knowing that i'd lose. and don't forget the points ive lost from disconnect... my internet is so annoying. if anyone knows how to fix this, please let me know.
But anyways, I made the final push to C- today, and I feel just great!

I went *exactly* 50% so far this iccup season, just reaching d+. I have yet to lose a single game that went past the ten minute mark. I really have no idea where I belong or where I will end up. ICCUP can be quite frustrating. Congrats mate.

ohhh yes i can remember the day i hit C- for the first time T.T.... memories  any ways the last 2 seasons i hit C for the first time so my new goal is C+ good luck with the push to higher and prettier letter grades. most importantly like you said you gotta play better players even if it means losing points and uglying up your record so if you wanna make it big don't be afraid to lose good luck^^

congrats!! I've also reached C- previously through some fluke, but quickly got shot back down to D+ and now I'm basically stuck on the lower levels of D+ lol. My goal is to reach C- again and maintain it throughout the season. Grats again on reaching C-!

Well, the reason you may have hit a wall earlier on this season could be due to the fact that I think some people wait a few weeks to start in order to avoid the high level players still clearing low-level ranks.
IMO you're "true" rank is the one obtained in the last week of the season. If you get stuck at a certain rank during the last week. That's probably you're "true" rank.

I remember when I hit C- for the first time, I finally felt like I hit a landmark in my ability. Keep on going, breaking out of the c range is gonna require twice as much work as before!

im just wondering, what do you guys feel are the dividing factors between D+ and C-?
from my experience, the C- players have:
-much better mechanics than steady D+'s
-better control and reaction
-better multitasking
-better unit production
-sneakier play and more trickery involved
what else?

I am assuming that he plays Terran cause his icon is a SCV. I'm really glad for you. I remember reaching C- long time ago then constantly getting stuck at C before reaching C+ season 8 and 9. I only reached it at the end of the season so I still consider myself a C level player. Its really motivating to reach a new rank even if it is just for 1 day.

After long time of inactivity (I used to play in National Team Of Greece) I started Iccup like 3-4 weeks ago, having played about 90 games with a score of 43-44, I just hit C- yesterday too  I got 3464 points I think. Tho not many people are around nowadays to play in my country, just sataNik,TagoMago,Zatoichi(kinda inactive),coulthard,Dea[LighT] and TaSSa which he is too kinda inactive. So Grats to us both and there is a lot more improvement going in the future. So if u wanna get better just mass play games, dont care about what stats opponents have etc just mass game and win or lose its always a improvement if you understand why u lost etc.

I usually find D and D+ players to be around the same.

I'm always kind of surprised to see so much importance attached to APM. On a high level of play, multitasking is definitely very important and you will need to have good mechanics. But insight is still way more important.
Take me for example. I have like a 110 APM, I don't even use hotkeys to control my army OR macro (I should work on this) and I didn't have that much trouble reaching C some seasons ago.

The one thing that bars me from getting to C- is the Terran race.
I get cooked alive by them.
