hi, i am deeply concerned about bannable material on TL.net because my IQ doesn't not let me infer it from TL.net 10 commandments even though i have a really experienced and practical mind when it comes to online speculation. 2 weeks ago i got temp banned for merely referring to this so called protoss 'joke' of 1a2a3a. What surprised me even more is that just prior to this i had remained, and rightfully i believe, ban-free following a much heated argument with Tasteless concerning Toss. So i am calling to my fellow TL.netters to enlighten me on what is bannable material here on TL and what are the generally accepted posting principles (GAPP). Concrete examples of real-life bans would also be appreciated because one of my 2009 resolutions is to remain completely ban-free for the entire year.
Private Message From: TL.net Bot Subject: You have been temp banned for 1 week. Date: 1/5/09 02:20 You have been temp banned for 1 week by vGl-CoW.
Reason: yeah let's just post 1a2a3a4a every time a protoss player is even mentioned, it used to be hilarious and it still is
Do not attempt to circumvent this ban by making a new account, or your ban duration will be increased.

One liners are generally frowned upon now.

Granted if you are making an OP but are one liners acceptable as replies?

Don't post unfunny memes* and you won't get banned

uhhh as long as you aren't making a dumb joke/flaming/dumb comment in general.
and by general i don't mean general forums

There is no science to making posts that will avoid getting banned. It is simply a matter of trying to avoid 'bad' posts, and making sure that you develop a history of making good contributory posts so that you're more likely to get the benefit of the doubt in the future.
What is bad varies a bit from mod to mod. One liners are generally bad, but if they are really funny or make a good point you will often get away with them. Making a post for a meme and absolutely no other reason is generally bad unless you are on the forefront! Also, once a meme is dead, you can get banned without warning.
|
I don't know but I am happy that you got banned for saying 1a2a3a4a it is such an ignorant comment.

whats a meme? Its a popular saying on the internet. Generally annoying and often completely and utterly retarded saying or term. An example would be "I LEIK MUDKIPZ".

The next Pony Express will serve you well.
Still your question is REALLY EASY TO ANSWER:
- just BE POLITE, avoid one liners in one liner purge times - the usual always goes: avoid linking to sites with cheats, warez or illegal sites, don't smurf, don't have more than one account, don't spam - and YOU will (almost*) NEVER be banned.
*there is a certain element of chaos in teamliquid no one is safe from lol..

Some of the moderators here really need to chill out. The things they ban people for... it's truly absurd.
|
Just ask yourself everytime before you hit post:
"What does this contribute to the topic"
And youl be fine.

It's pretty much impossible for them to avoid people saying what you just said without having the quality of the site end up degrading to utter crap. I think they could make minor adjustments, but it definitely isn't some incredibly ridiculous travesty of internet justice.

that's not the point. Of course veteranship status has its pro's, but generally, when you're new just try to contribute. You can contribute in different way, posting helpful information, making good arguments in a disscusion topic, flaming with intelligence and grace, putting actually funny remarks, etc. Avoid bad posts such as memes and meaningless one-liners. Avoid trolling. You'll be safe
|
hey 'Never' , i think you have to watch your back now.
P.S. Sorry for this one-liner.
|
LOL, never just got banned again.
Edit, Also, I'm pretty sure moderators at one point said 1a2a3a was over. Although getting banned for it may seem a bit harsh, it really never was a funny thing to begin with.

This. And if you're going to make a bad joke, MS some pictures to go with it, or something. The more effort you put into posts, the less you should worry about being in trouble with moderators (unless of course it interferes with the 10 commandments).
|
Generally one liners are looked down upon and is temp banned if the user is new just so you don't make a habit of it usually if you post a one liner just post it and add something else to it just give a few spaces in between it so you can make the joke but also a post we could read about etc besides that all tasteless things like racism were we don't see any humor in etc is just bannable
like this :D

I believe that you're required to contribute to the discussions that you post on. Quite obviously, a 1a2a3a joke contributes in no way whatsoever. However, an argument with Tasteless (or whomever) still progresses the discussion, even if it is an argument with a veteran member of the community.

Really the moderators have gotten too soft. I miss the days when blood would flow in the street on a moderator's whim. Now we have rules and reasons for bans.
I say we bring back the good old days of random terror. No need to let novices know what good posting behaviour is. Let them keep their heads down and watch the forums a bit before they tentatively test the waters. When they are out of line, whether they know it or not, be gone with them!
With the fear gone, we find the quality of our forums deteriorating and its mostly unsurprising.

Perhaps it was because, when someone posted a serious topic about their sick dog, you were the first reply and said this:
"heart failure sounds like hes going to die so either a dead dog or a higher water bill you decide"
You're a douchebag.
|
I think people need to realize that bad posts are what bring about punishment. The moderators aren't simply looking through the forums for people to ban. Instead of getting upset about getting temp banned, which is a warning, you should consider how the comment was viewed as unacceptable.
You've created a thread complaining about the mods that is thinly vieled as a question. This hasn't been closed even though it doesn't contribute anything useful. The reason is because you actually put some time into writing this up instead of ranting. The point is that you should think about the tone of all your posts and not just when you create a thread.
|
That's just callus even for me. T_T
|
I think its pretty easy to get banned.
Have a personality that is annoying or an attitude that is annoying over a series of posts.
Then a mod who has read enough shitty posts (from a mod perspective not a poster perspective) comes across another stupid post and they think hmm have I ever seen him post even halfway decent .... so they then check post history, hmmm nothing good for as far as the mouse could scroll.... then ok this guy does suck.
To be honest this is the most thought you've ever put into a post. At first I couldn't stand you but I think our moderation is awesome, I don't get the vibe that you are so appauled that you created this out of pure spite... I think anybody who has read your posts can tell your smart and that you spend 90% of the time stating the obvious or trying to be funny. You will probably know go on to be a more structured and intelligent poster, which I believe is the ultimate goal of the mods anyway, to repremand 'annoying' posters into realizing that they could be better.
btw I got temp banned by plexa for quoting giant text with one or two lines. I was so offended that I literally hit the wall ( I got a warning and still fucked up). Then I read my post history and thought "That little fuck,..... fuck he's right I've been a stupid asshole about that"
You got banned for a week for a reason, I think the 'reason' they gave you wasn't a good enough caption to why you got banned for that long.
Good luck man, welcome to the post disney world that is teamliquid.net/fearofmods/attackzerg

Does this mean that you're new years resolution failed in less than a week ? Being serious, the best way to not get banned is to think about your posts. Ask yourself if your post helps the thread in any way, if not, you ought to have a really good reason to post it. I guess others have said it better than me though. Not getting banned is really pretty easy.

what fits the mod's mood. Fairly arbitrary really. p.s. there's some loose guideliens but I don't think the mods have their own mod version of the 10 commendment. Sometimes they discuss if its worth it

To keep from being banned, just make sure that in general, you're responding both to the op and the current discussion. Show that you've read the thread, and it helps a lot if you're not trying to be a jerk, you're being a civil person, debating on the merits of a point instead of just flaming the other person and calling them a jerk.

Just be nice and try to contribute something to the thread with every post. Don't just repeat what other posters are saying.
If you honestly can only come up with one sentence for a response, that can be just as appropriate as a paragraph. It's totally situational, just don't go around posting 1 liners in every thread.

Don't just be like "Your a noob, i'm obviously right" - Don't constantly join the TL attack games when you aren't supposed to(lol) - Don't spoil games that are recent and might not have been seen (or at least put a spoiler in thread name) - Put effort into your threads when you make them, whether it in the strategy forum, or merely a blog - Don't be racist/prejudice/sexist/etc - Don't constantly type in slang and funny words. Use SOME grammer at least. (i.e. "i has gud op anser mai questions nao?") - Don't give advice on what you don't know. ex. If you only know how to play zerg don't post in a TvP help thread. - Try to give back to the community. In even small ways like saying "Thanks!" when MasterOfChaos updates ChaosLauncher, or blogging about interesting/entertaining things. - Penis
That is all.

Everyone else has basically summed it up. I think another thing to add is if you really cannot help but post a one-liner, it damn well better be funny (or at least entertaining) to most of the members here (and more so the mods), otherwise it's definitely frowned upon.

Man, this thread is one giant ban trap.
Honestly, you have to be pretty retarded to get banned and not know why. This isn't like SA—there's 10 commandments that lay it out pretty easily. Most of the bans here are people acting like little kids and trying to push the envelope and then get mad when they get caught.
|
Shouldn't say one liners are always bad. There's alot of ways to be concise and sum everything up in one line. But I will agree that more often than not, your post will have more to contribute if you expand your ideas behind the one liner summation anyways.
