I just got a job as a paralegal at a prestigious law firm and the IT policy is that we cannot use the internet for personal business. This is what the contract reads:

The purpose of electronic communication is to support business related needs, by providing access to unique resources and the opportunity for collaborative work. The employee's use of the system must be in support of business related requirements and be consistent with the objectives of the Employer.

Sure a lot of work is demanded but there are spare two minute gaps every now and then but so far I haven't seen anyone else use their computer to check their e-mails (ie. non-work related, eg. Gmail or Hotmail) or surf the internet, not even at lunchtimes (although everyone does leave the office at lunch), and as a new employee I'm a bit reluctant to ask about it.

It made me think deep philosophical thoughts though, regarding whether the NSFW tab actually applies to anyone who read threads at work with workmates looking over their shoulders, or does everyone just click on them anyway? Someone once suggested in Website Feedback a open all spoilers button, with the broadband speed of loading images these days why not just get rid of NSFW spoilers altogether?

NSFW is the easy way of knowing whether or not something is safe to view with others around be it at work or home or anywhere. Its pretty straight foward. People know what is behind a NSFW tag and therefore can judge on a case by case situation as to whether they want to look or not.

For obvious reasons, you dont want to have some pic of some naked chick on your screen when other people are around when all you were doing was checking your favourite starcraft forum.

That contract is just so they can fire you for whatever they want and just pull out one incidence you went to hotmail.com and blame it on that.

Most employees don't realize that your boss can review your activities online and can dictate whether your activities effect your performance. There's hardly any privacy so the label "NSFW" is especially looked at.

Regarding the label "NSFW" is also applied to other possible events. You may be with your relatives and don't want them to be alarm of your browsing behaviors. The technical meaning of "not safe for work" isn't limited to your job's environment although it did derived from that. It's for situations that need to be formal or causal.

Untrue, to fire someone based on breach of contract it has to be a serious breach and warrant the consequence of a termination of the work relationship.

This would have to involve a single serious breach or a continual disregard for contract policy concerning smaller matters such as the clause you stated concerning communication technology usage in the office.

That plus obviously that if such clauses are present in a contract and they are obviously there to avoid the rules and regulations regarding the ending of a worker contract instead of being an effective way to achieve what they are intending to at first glance they are automatically null and void. Hard to prove obviously but company history concerning the way how they "let people go" can be a good way to back such a statement up.

All in all easier said then done :p.

For a blog titled NSFW it is quite safe. An "open all spoilers" button isn't really necessary, I mean, how hard is it to click a few times? And spoilers aren't just used for NSFW thing, anything that might be information some people might not want to know, like say spoiling a plot point to a movie, book game, etc.

Example:

yes, it just means that we work at better places than lots of other people.

the spoiler tags in general are used for lots of different things, ranging from game information type of spoilers to nsfw spoilers (and lots inbetween, sometimes in the same thread). If you were able to open all of them, you'de probably see lots of things that you don't want to see.

NSFW doesnt really mean that you are going to be safe from it in the spoiler. Most likely the company you work for has a server which loads the images anyway and if it finds a censored or banned link in that image you will most likely get screwed. The most important thing to remember is to actually do your job at work, not surf the internets haha
