Torment is the better of the two by far for me. Don't get it if you don't like reading a whole hell of a lot, though.

I wasn't sure if I was going to like it or not, but I never got to judge it really. I'm also having a bit of trouble finding these older games... don't really want to play $20 from Amazon. Sounds like Half-life and Metal Gear Solid are heavy favorites here... and Bioshock? What's got the best storyline? Easily half life, theres over 40 hours of gaming on easy if you play hl1+2+episode1+2 and its funer if you play it on hard

Haha (I'm not too fond of zombies) Haha, happy and carefree + good gaming storyline = more than somewhat hard to come by. I haven't played most of the games on the list, honestly, but I know FFVII and Torment have plenty of humor, though the storylines overall aren't centered around happy, light things. :p

The original System Shock is even better imho ;-) That said, Half Life 1+2 are not bad either Edit: and if you're really oldschool, and have some imagination, there's lots of joy to be had with the Zork series, HHGTG, etc

However it is the best of the FF according to myself and many others. Then theres a baddass movie you can watch after youve finished playing.

I'm surprised how many people nominated Eternal Darkness... makes me want to pick up a copy really badly now. Also, how could you guys forget Freespace 2? It's very suspenseful, and man, did that game have MOMENTS. If you've played through it, you know what I'm talking about. Personally, I think the best war story I've ever played through was the single player campaign in World in Conflict. That game simply had the best overall voice acting in a game ever, and absolutely stunning writing, and superb presentation. It was immersive and gave you that "oh shit what if this were to happen in real life, that'd be awful" feeling.

I haven't played any of these actually, which should I try first? Eternal Darkness :D It's got a sanity metre (in addition to a health and mana metre), and your character goes crazy as you progress further and further into the game. Plus you said you wanted story, and this game hands down has the best voice acting you'll ever find in a video game, and takes serious effort to tell you an engaging story. Honestly, this is the most underappreciated game ever, and it's something everyone should play IMO Half Life is not much of a story game lol... it's fun, when you're not stuck, but nothing in the plot strikes me as particularly interesting or unique, nor does it take time to specifically tell you a story. Really, even Diablo I is more of a story game than half life if you bother to talk to the townsfolk and do quests.

I do have Twilight Princess, didn't get very far on my first session... should I keep playing? I wasn't sure if I was going to like it or not, but I never got to judge it really. I would say yes, but I've played all the TV console Zelda games, so it might be more of loyal fandom than anything else. I think the Zelda game with the most interesting story was Majora's Mask, but that's likely because it's the only one that wasn't "go save the princess," as its entire plot. Zelda games are immersing, but only if you like the idea of running around with a million different gadgets in giant ridiculous dungeons against even more ridiculous bosses. That, and the music for all Zelda games has always been superb. I wouldn't exactly say it's intellectually stimulating though, which is what I assume you want for a story game. Also: pretty much any Final Fantasy game is a story game (except maybe the very first ones, which left a lot to your imagination). My favourite has always been Final Fantasy II (for the SNES, IV in Japan or whatever shit). My friends and I are working our way through Final Fantasy IX right now, which isn't bad, but the characters are oddly less believable than in FF II (in that you have like, a 7 foot tall knight, a 4 foot tall wizard guy with no face, this monkey guy with a tail, and this 12 year old girl who dresses in overalls, and a queen who looks like a clown...)
