Bioshock 1950's science fiction backdrop with ayn rand philosophy in the mix Also, one of the best twists I have ever found in a video game.
Shadow of the Colossus Its for PS2 but you have to play this game, immerse and unique experience, although there is no "deep" characterization of individuals in the game.
Half Life + Half life 2 No real reasons, just get em' they are instant classics, I recommend the orange box.
Any console legend of zelda series has a decent storyline to it, not as deep as FF series, but the exploration and the cliche conflict of good vs evil is not a bad department for video games.
O yes, if you have a decent enough pc, you can get a ps2 emulator and download all sorts of games.
Bioshock i found was full of ausomness, the story line is a little strange but it is very nice, the gameplay and grapics are really really good. all the half life games are one big storyline and it is veryy good, imo get these two games
I do have Twilight Princess, didn't get very far on my first session... should I keep playing? I wasn't sure if I was going to like it or not, but I never got to judge it really.
I'm also having a bit of trouble finding these older games... don't really want to play $20 from Amazon.
Sounds like Half-life and Metal Gear Solid are heavy favorites here... and Bioshock?

What's got the best storyline?
Easily half life, theres over 40 hours of gaming on easy if you play hl1+2+episode1+2 and its funer if you play it on hard

Haha, happy and carefree + good gaming storyline = more than somewhat hard to come by.
I haven't played most of the games on the list, honestly, but I know FFVII and Torment have plenty of humor, though the storylines overall aren't centered around happy, light things. :p
Metal Gear Solid 1 and 2 have the absolute best storyline conceivable. The second one is the biggest mindfuck I've ever experienced. Seriously worthwhile.

Its a ps1 game, and has horrendous graphics. However it is the best of the FF according to myself and many others. Then theres a baddass movie you can watch after youve finished playing.
Planescape torment has the greatest writing and storyline of any game ever, period. Surprised nobody mentioned Mass Effect. The plot wasn't that original, but the presentation is terrific.
I'm surprised how many people nominated Eternal Darkness... makes me want to pick up a copy really badly now.
Also, how could you guys forget Freespace 2? It's very suspenseful, and man, did that game have MOMENTS. If you've played through it, you know what I'm talking about.
Personally, I think the best war story I've ever played through was the single player campaign in World in Conflict. That game simply had the best overall voice acting in a game ever, and absolutely stunning writing, and superb presentation. It was immersive and gave you that "oh shit what if this were to happen in real life, that'd be awful" feeling.
I haven't played any of these actually, which should I try first?
Eternal Darkness :D It's got a sanity metre (in addition to a health and mana metre), and your character goes crazy as you progress further and further into the game. Plus you said you wanted story, and this game hands down has the best voice acting you'll ever find in a video game, and takes serious effort to tell you an engaging story. Honestly, this is the most underappreciated game ever, and it's something everyone should play
IMO Half Life is not much of a story game lol... it's fun, when you're not stuck, but nothing in the plot strikes me as particularly interesting or unique, nor does it take time to specifically tell you a story. Really, even Diablo I is more of a story game than half life if you bother to talk to the townsfolk and do quests.

I would say yes, but I've played all the TV console Zelda games, so it might be more of loyal fandom than anything else. I think the Zelda game with the most interesting story was Majora's Mask, but that's likely because it's the only one that wasn't "go save the princess," as its entire plot.
Zelda games are immersing, but only if you like the idea of running around with a million different gadgets in giant ridiculous dungeons against even more ridiculous bosses. That, and the music for all Zelda games has always been superb. I wouldn't exactly say it's intellectually stimulating though, which is what I assume you want for a story game.
Also: pretty much any Final Fantasy game is a story game (except maybe the very first ones, which left a lot to your imagination). My favourite has always been Final Fantasy II (for the SNES, IV in Japan or whatever shit). My friends and I are working our way through Final Fantasy IX right now, which isn't bad, but the characters are oddly less believable than in FF II (in that you have like, a 7 foot tall knight, a 4 foot tall wizard guy with no face, this monkey guy with a tail, and this 12 year old girl who dresses in overalls, and a queen who looks like a clown...)

Unless you have a PS1 memory card you'd better get it for PC, or an emulator. For some reason FF7 won't let you save on a PS2 memory card, but it'll play just fine on PS2 so if you wanna do a marathon gaming session that's an option.

find the ff7 ultimate version on a certain website.

I was about to come back to this and post "O yeah, and I forgot about God of War!"
It's not as in-depth a storyline as an RPG, but it's still pretty good. There are a few twisty moments where you just smile/blink at the screen, and seeing as how the gameplay was pure fun for me, it was a very enjoyable experience.
Red Alert 2 and it's expansion pack are the epitome of a "happy, carefree" storyline :D I mean, Einstein goes back in time to remove Hitler, leading to an eventual USSR invasion with mind-controlled squids and killer mechanical spiders?
By no means serious, they're ranked pretty high up on my list in terms of fun; they're also fast-paced RTS with good playability, which is a plus.

if thats the pc version, you're better off just emulating from an iso
Baldur's Gate II, anybody? Stellar story (that actually starts with Baldur's Gate, but I can't vouch for that one), extremely well aged graphics, and the best video game recreation of (2nd edition) D&D rules ever. It's also extremely long and engaging.

I have heard a lot of good things about this game, never played it though :\ .
If you want best story and fun gameplay, Legend of Zelda: Orcarina of Time. I don't know what it is about that game, it's just, seriously, I cannot find words to explain the story. If you have not played this game, PLAY IT NOW. It is available for emulators, wii virtual console, a gamecube version, and the good old n64. Seriously though, this games story line is just so... you gotta play it to understand.

Save the princess... Just like almost every Zelda and Mario game ever invented haha. I give the game big points for having excellent music, but as far as plot goes.. no surprises, just a fun RP experience

Baldur's Gate has a much better storyline and is closer to 2e D&D than is its successor.

This is maybe the only game that made me feel bad for killing people, and the music is sooooooooooooo good.
And lol @ Diablo 2 in the op.
Yes the music is amazing, I listen to it quite often. PM me if you dont have the Mp3's Ill send them to you..
Fun Fact: I went a little crazy listening to the UNATCO song for like 18 hours a day for a couple weeks while working out/training hardcore to join the navy (I wanted the song in my head during bootcamp (yes im wierd)), well I ended up deciding against the Navy, but boy.. that was an expereince lol
EDIT: did you kill scott? ^^; I couldnt hurt the poor boy myself, we were good buddys back in the day ya know? ;p

Lol you a weirdo xD. I dont remember all the details of the game even if i cimpleted it again last year in realistic mode. Scott is a guy that you can save in a mission and who then tell to some of his friends in the military to let you enter the base in Brooklyn where the tanker with ambrosia is , right ?

Hehe looks interesting especially for people who want to try the game for the first time. But graphics arent a problem for me. I like the oldschool skins of the Unreal engine .
I seriously hope that Deus Ex 3 wont be garbage. Less linear + more dialogs / side quests / larger maps + good story please ! . ( i didnt play Dx 2 because many people told me that it sucked ).
Scott was the gaurd posted behind the desk right before you enter the main UNATCO facility (the eye scanner door). On your second final trip through UNATCO he starts firing at you, and many people from the game community say they couldnt kill him they felt too bad, so I have to ask this everytime I find a fan hehe..
Deus Ex 2. Well yeah, it was a huge disapointment and I hate the way Harvey Smith butchered it. But I would recomend you play through it, just for continuity of story if anything else. But honestly it was a pretty decent shooter with an above average story and some pretty fun gameplay at times. At times it really does have that Deus Ex atmosphere.. The thing is when you compare it to the original it becomes bad =/. Honestly it is better then most shooters even if I despise it, If that makes sense..

Oh i probably killed him. I completed the game twice, two times with a tank/ riffle+ gun specialist so i killed a lot of people each time ( and i disliked a lot Unatco dudes ) ^^.
