iCCup server maintenance nostalgia

I started playing SC around 2010 when there was SC2 hype. I didn't have a computer to play SC2 on so I got into Brood War and I loved it. I eventually found iCCup and joined clan [MB] (Maximus Brood), and older legendary EU clan. Anyway iCCup had server maintenance every once and awhile, and we would migrate to a b.net, or Korean server during that time. We would have to download a different anti hack like chaos launcher or wlauncher. We would host obs games and use #L2 to set the latency to something that would work for 8 people. Some obs maps didn't have enough obs slots so a player would have to select terran and kill their scvs and lift. The cool players would have their scv's repair around a vespene geyser making a merry-go-round. So now with the official b.net servers down and there being a migration to shield battery, it feels very reminiscent of iccup server maintenance. I kind of hope shield battery can catch on and become the next iccup. I think if it were to have a clan system and integrated tournament setting it would.

Your post made me think of this video. If you went to iccup website during maintenance this would play on repeat.

Wow that video was a blast from the past hahaha.

I was mostly active on iCCup in its earlier days but I don't remember having much trouble with maintenance.

Speaking of which, why doesn't iCcup work with Remastered? And how come Shield Battery can?

And to stay on topic: Agreed! I hope SB becomes the new standard. Can't trust "blizzard" with anything anymore anyway.

i miss telling people that the maintenance is just another way to ruin brood war forever, whenever i got asked if we deleted the server or something

If my understanding is correct, iCCup is essentially a private server for 1.16.1, hence why they provided you with the ability to download BW off the site, while SB is more of an interface that allows you to play BW through it, which is why it can record points, has its own ladder and netcode etc...

ICCup is/was a slightly modified version of PvPGN, which was basically a server that emulated an official Battle.net server. To the game client code, it was connecting to an "official" server, just one that was at a different-than-normal address (thus, the setup for ICCup was just to modify your list of available servers to include that new address). The upside to that approach is that you don't have to to modify the client at all. The downside is that you have all of the same limitations that normal BNet has with regards to its features, network protocol, UI, etc.

With ShieldBattery we wanted to expand the features significantly and it required a very different UI, so abandoning the idea of emulating BNet was central to its development, and we never depended on emulating those servers. Our approach was always to run our own servers and configure games programmatically (through reverse-engineered code paths), even on 1.16.

With the launch of SC:R, older BNet servers were replaced with new ones, with completely different protocols, and no one has undertaken a project like PvPGN to emulate them. Thus, there is no server for ICCup to run, they would either have to build such a thing (huge task), or take a very different approach (also a huge task). With ShieldBattery, we had to put in a fair amount of work changing how we configured/launched the game, but we were able to keep using all our existing server/UI/network code. (We also have active developers that actually care about BW, which helps a bit too )
