sniping mines with DT's...wtf?

My first SCR loss came to DT's (of course) and during the game I thought he walked past my mines somehow but apparently the DT just walked through the mines and sniped them as they popped up. Is this something you can consistently do with DT's now? I don't remember this ever being a thing that could be with any consistency but this just makes two mines look like a complete waste of life. If this is something that can be consistently microed I might as well stop wasting time and just switch races asap

Uhh. I guess if the game lags maybe a DT can snipe mines in time? Usually those fuckers just jump on my DTs face in .5 seconds flat though.

Edit: I apologize for my race of choice.
So wait? I'm bad? =(

I mean I've seen one offs where the mines go on a wonky pathing and not land or get sniped like this, but to get through two without taking damage??? I'd rather have sc2 mines than these turds

I vaguely remember someone talking about this a while back. I think it was either kwark or leg.

Yep, you can. I think it's extremely difficulty to do but it's possible, I'm sure of that.

Wow I always thought it was just glitchy mine pathing or something. Would like to hear from a Protoss on how it's done, must be like hold position as soon as the mine is popping up.

You can bind custom hotkeys now in SCR right? Maybe this guy is binding hold position on his mouse which might make something like this easier.

and kwark's video how to do it

But yea the idea about it has been out for a while.

I mean, the reason I'm sure is because I've seen it done before. It could be the mine glitching too that caused it. I think it's essentially a combination of the dark templar one hitting the mine before it blows up. Much like cracklings killing mines late game before the blow up. In the video, the dark templar got close to the mine before it unburrowed. I could be wrong but I think both mines should've unburrowed much earlier than in the video so essentially, dt walks in, mines unburrow within the attack range, get killed before they blow up.

Edit:

T_T afaik i invented the dt vs mines 3 years ago when i was in POS. I actually had a UMS to practice it on, bejjang kept telling me i was wasting my time, but i thought it was fun

Always wanted to win a game by using dts/obs vs mines in a tv match but i never had the opportunity.

You will notice that attacking from a diagonal position, mines pop up a lot earlier, but not from directly on the side, or if the dts a fraction above it. There is also a way to do it with attacking the mines.

Pretty useless if there are multiple mines around :S

Angle of attack is important so might make sense here.

If it's glitchy mine pathing I'm not as concerned. in the second video ils linked it looks like it is a matter of pressing hold position at almost the simultaneous moment the mine pops up, incredibly difficult to time if you don't know where the mines are in advance

I always thought this was normal - if you just manually right click on the mine with the DT then you'll hit it, you just have to do it in time???

Just how hard is it to pull it off, though? Hard or inconsistent enough to be justified? OP's mere two mines aren't convincing.

not sure, but this reminds me that u can bind patrol into the attack key, so if u patrol dts into an area of mines, maybe they respond fast enough to kill it???

Apparently someone is saying it's only possible while the DT is moving downwards on a map as well

From what I remember, this was always a thing.

I don't remember if it was just A-move or if you had to use hold position to get a faster attack.

that would make no sense. If the game lags, every unit lags the same, it's not like the DT is out of the game engine.

What you are talking about is sniping mines that are revealed by an observer. It's done by inching closer to the mine, by simply using the move command, and waiting for the DT to automatically acquire the target.
EDIT: Hm, actually Kwarks video shows it can be done without obs too. But still, in that video Kwark knows where the mines are, and moves the DT just to the right spots.

yes, it does seem so because the guy slows down the replay.

I believe this is the most plausible explanation.

personally, I feel this happens sometimes in TvP.

I think the first one he got lucky with the a move, kinda like when ultras or lings just kill the mine before it goes off.

The second one I'm sure he also got lucky with a-moving but you could possibly walk up to the mine and hold position or something?

No luck. I remember doing this. It's pretty fucking hard and you need to know where the mines are (roughly is fine, you just need the right angle, you could zig zag through a minefield and it'd work, even if you didn't know exactly where). But probably no harder than using dancing dragons to move through a minefield. A dt has nonzero range, if you combine that with the right angle and the hold command you can trigger an attack before the mine detonates. However if you tell it to attack a mine it'll walk up until it's on top of the mine, then start the attack animation, and that's no good.

I've seen pros do this successfully on stream. But it's not reliable from what I've seen. Also I've done it before too, but only on the downward direction in an iccup game before (like in the micro training map.)

I recall playing a micro training map where we had to snipe mines with DTs. It was possible for a noob like me, I just walked toward the mine and spammed hold position.
