Hi guys this is former SC2 pro FnaticRain. Please don't get confused with SKTRain Lmfaooo. First of all, my English kinda sucks balls so please take into consideration and if u find any grammatical mistakes please let me know.
I'm currently living in Sacramento, CA. First time I got here I couldn't find my own apartment cause they asked me to submit some documents that don't have. So I looked up for the homestays and I found my host family and lived with them for about 4months. Now I moved out with friends I made here and we found our own apartment.
I've finished my first semester successfully and now I'm on the winter vacation. One thing that I realized is that people literally don't give a shit as much as I thought about what I did in the past. I was expecting something like... I'd be a cool kid because once SC2 was fairly big in US. Actually, my SC2 career helped me getting some friends, I didn't mean to brag but some of my friends looked me up through google and now everyone knows that I played SC2 professionally. Also, it was more difficult to make local friends than I thought. Most of my friends are either Koreans or international students from other countries and my English doesn't seem to be improved.
Now I completely adjusted myself but I had some difficulties because of the cultural differences. When I was in Korea I went out to drink almost everyday, but in here.. I rarely go out. In my opinion, people here are more tend to do something creative rather than drinking and being fucked up.
Honestly I don't know why I'm writing this... I'm just extremely bored LOOL.

haha so I was right when I thought being a Esports Pro captures people's attention. Nice to know you worked things out with your living situation.
|
Haha, just practice and your English will be amazing soon. Good thing your living situation is nice now! It's a shame to hear about the lack of drinking, hope you can torture your liver repeatedly in the near future.
Fighting! :D

nice to hear that things are going rather well for you. Best of luck in 'murica

Nice blog, keep writing :D

Enjoy winter break Rain. If you get a chance while your stateside go to some of our national parks, Yosemite is only a few hours away. They are incredible.

P.S. Your written English is better than you think, it flows pretty well and isn't grammatically terrible by any means.
|
If you can use such casual idioms as "kinda sucks balls" or "literally don't give a shit" properly I'd say your English is quite good! (Slang is always the hardest part of a language to learn imo). Only noticeable mistake is the line that should say: "now I am completely adjusted".
Anyways it's really cool that you're making it here, if you keep going out and meeting people I'm sure you'll make lots of friends!

You're written English is good... I read your posts/blogs in the past and honestly someone should seriously do a short documentary on life after pro gaming. I think that would be really interesting and give people a more grounded perspective on shit... gl next semester and please keep blogging.

Aw, welcome to California! You should come down to the Bay Area, so many nerdy things to do here

in Amuricca you drink in room and drunk

Well it seems like your written English is better than most Americans and frankly majority of Americans cannot speak English correctly either. At least international and second-language students do not use "like" and some other adjective constantly in their vernacular, it annoys me.

Looking through your blog history it's surprising how fast you've made everything happen, from retiring to deciding to study in the US, getting a visa, choosing a school, finding an apartment and now finishing your first year. Keep it up!

Unfortunately, Sacramento is a pretty small town. You're going to find more artistic and outdoorsy types there. And I guess more rural types.
If you can, take advantage of the national park system. Yosemite is an awesome place and it is pretty close by. If you want a taste of the big city, you can head to the San Francisco area.

Hey Rain! What's good I'm also around Sacramento. Let's hang out haha before winter break ends!
Enjoy your stay in Cowtown. I have to say that Sacramento is a fairly boring city, but there's some cool stuff.
Sacramento Kings, our basketball team, used to be really good back in the early 2000's with Chris Webber, Vlade Divac, Doug Christie, Peja and Mike Bibby. It sucks in recent history, but maybe there's hope this season. Unfortunately Cousins, our star, has been out and injured.
There's Old Sac, don't know if you have been there, but it's a nice place to explore for a while. There's some railroad museums and tons of candy stores to get some taffy.
Over the summer, definitely would recommend to go rafting on the American River to cool off. Other ways to cool off are at the water park Raging Waters in Sac. Or water guns.
I don't know if you have tried any Korean restaurants in Norcal. Oz is sadly the only ayce kbbq around Sacramento, I think. Definitely go to LA Koreatown for kbbq in the US.
Have a good time in Sac and in America, Rain. xD Shoot me a PM if you want to know anything else bout Sac and other stuff

Hey dude I'm located in Sacramento at the moment, going to be heading back to Canada pretty soon though.

That sounds so weird lol.

great blog rain! keep it up man. try to find a conversation partners project on your campus - many of the international students at the school i graduated from didn't have that many English speakers to speak to since they just hung out in their own little clique, so i helped coordinate a project where we paired Americans in my Cross-Cultural Psychology class i was a TA for with the international students and just talk culture, and it was really awesome!

this is ridiculous and i have no idea how you're equating cultural vernacular and slang with "not knowing how to speak english" , and i also don't know how you think that ELC/INTL students don't use filler words such as like and um because in my direct experience, they absolutely do. writing is WAY different than reading as well, nobody knows how good of a conversationalist rain is yet
it's such a vapid and circlejerky thing to say i'm really surprised even the admins get in on it. it's extremely subjective and if you want to compare it to professional/graduate level english, everyone here has horrible, absolutely unimaginative english.

I'll give you some honesty here.
Don't listen to people saying "well this stuff still happens around town, you're just unaware". No. You will forever be lonely in the US compared to how things were back home for you. It's just something you need to get used to.
People are so fucking weird here. Weird and insecure. No one has real guy friends either, unless they are acting out as "bros", which is disgustingly artificial and won't work for too long unless you're retarded. This nation is all about being an individual. You can start a family here or succeed at something or fuck people etc. - but no workplace will be hitting restaurants/bars on a regular, people secretly hate each other.
I don't remember truly sharing with someone in my 12 years in the US. I've met a few people that I could talk to, but it was not the same. You sure can shoot about holidays, weather and Obama - always the same conversation though.
Just do what's good for you. You need a plan here.
|
Good job making your way through your first year in the US! Its nice to see that you are finding success in a new environment.
Truth be told, people are rather reclusive for the most part, sticking to close circles of few friends (think no more than 5 at the most). Although I am surprised as to how many TLers are infact in or around the Sacramento area. Would a TL Sacramento meetup be a good idea?

I would LOVE for this to become a thing. There are about two weeks of winter break left for students, so I don't see why not. It would be great to have some sort of day in downtown, or even pack a house for a LAN party or something for a grand old time. All that is needed is a time or a place!

Haha yeah ;D That was meant as a compliment, I guess, but I wouldn't go for the "5% of people I met are dumber than you" type of compliment every day.
Oh and Rain, nice to read about you bro :D

I thought you used to go to university in New York? What are you studying in California? Thanks for the blog!
