So for the last like 10~ years, at least once or twice a year I will have this happen.
It's usually passed midnight, maybe more like 1:30-2:30. I'll be laying in bed watching a movie or sleeping. And I will all the sudden have wheezing and shortness of breath, coughing out this light yellow phlegm. It maybe lasts 15-30 minutes where I'm all fucked up and keep hocking loogies. Eventually I get back to sleep even though my throat is now a bit sore and my breathing is still abnormal.
I wake up in the morning (feels like I didn't get good sleep for sure) still hocking up the (now more clear white) shit and for the rest of the day I'll keep coughing to sort of clear my throat or whatever. I've also had a headache all day but I think that might be unrelated, or just aggravated by it.
Originally when it started happening, I thought it was my exgf's goosefeather pillows and the microparticles poking into my throat/lungs (because that is what it feels like), cuz they sort of 'fluff out' of the pillows. Years later I realized it was nothing to do with that. It's also worth mentioning that this has happened in a number of places, my rooms (I've moved quite a bit), friends houses, exgfs' houses etc. Iirc, it seems to happen more often in the summer, but the last time it happened it was after Thanksgiving. I don't think it has anything to do with what I've eaten because my diet is largely the same from day to day throughout the years. Oh and I live in So Cal and the windows are always open.
Anyone else have something similar happen? Any tips or advices?
PS- Just this last year I started to run more, and whenever I run outdoors it seems to hurt my lungs like they can't take it while my body feels like it can run wayyy longer. And this doesn't happen when I run on the treadmills in 24/hr fitness. So I'm suspecting some sort of outdoor allergy I am developing.

if you have this, you should immediately fucking go see a doctor instead of posting a blog on TL. bluntly, a massive majority of us arent doctors and cant diagnose your illness. go see a doctor. like. right now.
you better come back to us. id hate if you randomly have some weird lung cancer shit.
good luck and good health.

Could be anything from a Lung Infection to a Chest infection. By the sounds of it though this is happening for a long time and only once or twice a year, so if your asthmatic it could just be a reaction to that.
By the PS statement i think you could quite be Asthmatic. Go to the Dr though im sure he can say whether your Asthmatic or actually have a Lung/Chest infection or even another form of something i don't know about.
Coughing up phlegm is bad though especially when it isn't green (booger colour).

You don't smoke do you? This sounds like cystic fybrosis symptoms honestly but I'm assuming you would know if you had that :/ idk

This?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exercise-induced_bronchoconstriction
It might be expected that the athlete with E.I.B. would present with shortness of breath, and/or an elevated respiratory rate and wheezing, consistent with an asthma attack. However, many will present with decreased stamina, or difficulty in recovering from exertion compared to team members, or paroxysmal coughing from an irritable airway. (Though it's weird that it presents at night, contact your doctor anyway).
I'm a runner too, and though I never had lung symptoms, sometimes my heart starts racing weirdly fast for no apparent reason, which subsides after like 15-20 seconds. I guess getting used to physical stress sometimes makes body do weird things.

Luckily for you Chalz, I like you, and my post count pretty much qualifies me to give advice on anything really. This sounds like smoker's cough!! You can get it from chiba too. It could be a simple allergen such as mold, pollen, etc. All those counts go up and down each day, so some days your eyes can feel like they're going to explode in your skull and your lungs will feel like they're on fire, and others you'll be fine
My qualified advice for you is to go see a more qualified doctor.

you can have a heart anomaly like me.
In the recovery phase after exercise my heart usually goes fast. And very rarely it starts racing randomly and makes me feel very terrible until it recovers. It has to do with signals to heartmuscles not going the right way.
just let a heartspecialist test it, better than dying randomly in your 30s. The tricky thing for me was that i always had it and thought its normal, they discovered my condition randomly when the army did test me.
To the op, why dont you ask your doctor for a blood allergy test. allergies can get worse and then you suddenly have asthma for half the year when you could have just got like 5 injections over 2 months and have the allergy removed.

The thing is, normally I have low BP (my family has a history of it) and feel like shit, so getting through such thing actually makes me feel a bit better. Plus I have no symptoms after excercising at all, only like random episodes approximately once in two months. I've always assumed those were just some weird anxiety attacks...
|
Dude, just go to a doctor, it'll solve all those problems haha.
|
Like the above have mentioned, go see a doctor. Wheezing isn't to my knowledge related to anxiety usually.
And as someone with asthma, i've had the experience of waking up late wheezing and shortness of breath and will use ventolin if required but not the extra symptoms that you mention.
"Ahem", go to a doctor.

My qualified advice for you is to go see a more qualified doctor. I don't regularly smoke. I smoke sometimes when I am drinking which is anywhere from 8-2 times a month, where I'll have a couple puffs or a couple cigs, or a few hits off one of those vape pens (but these are relatively new anyways). And I don't smoke weed or anything else.
I don't have the means to go to a doctor unless I go spend all day or a couple of all days at some free county hospital or a college far away. These allergy attacks aren't that serious, they are just a nuisance for less than a day when they randomly happen.
I think the night running in the cold while breathing through the mouth and not warming the air sufficiently is part of the cause for that issue.
I guess it's also worth mentioning that a couple of times in my life, I've had really bad, itchy, watery eyes for a day. So whatever allergy I have it takes a lot of whatever it is and it's rare and just fucks with me, it's not life threatening.

But if you're looking for poor person advice, you could start checking allergen counts daily for your area, and keep a log of when these things happen. That's a safe and free way of trying to pinpoint what is wrong. See if your place is dusty too... dust is brutal for me. dustmites can be a bitch too.
as far as running, it could be you breathing wrong, you not being used to running a lot yet (i get this when I start up soccer again after a long layoff over winter) ... so maybe that goes away with time.
also, ianad, but from my own experience, colored phlegm = bacteria or virus usually, while clear but thick and annoying is allergies
|
Oh right, I read that late summer that dustmites get out of hand and cause a lot of issues with people. That's actually what it might be. Every time I clean out the dust from my PC it is pretty bothersome, but not to this extreme.
|
dust your room, move your bed and get under there, do your blinds, clean your a/c filter (this is a big one) your couch etc etc
|
Ain't nobawdy got time fo dat
|
I actually just washed my blinds and am washing my sheets and shit right now. And I recently cleaned the fuck out of my room from fleas and other bugs. I need to clean my pc and the wall thing if I can.
Oh yea btw, look what this spider did to me last august (I still have scars from it). Pretty sure it was a combination of the venom and an allergic reaction (maybe the spider had some shit all stuck in his hairs)

I eventually caught him and spider boarded him for a day then released him back into the garden.

I had an opportune moment. There was a dead fly in the window sill. The kind of fly that looks alive but just died there standing.
So I dropped it in that cd case with the spider all night and the next day when I went to work. I watched as the spider lunged and attacked the fly over and over. Came back, he was still randomly doing it. I figured it was a sort of torturous thing to do that was worse than death. Then I released him in the garden, hoping he would go kill some shit.

Happened again. Right around 1am, still have the wheezing and coughing up yellow phlegm spit straight from the lungs like 40 minutes later. I made a cup of tea which I have no idea if it's actually doing anything, but it is soothing to have the warm liquid going down. Windows are closed. I dunno if it's worth mentioning that I spent the night at a friends house on the floor of her dirty room with dogs and cats around. I had maybe 1 cig around 11:45pm and had a mild hangover really.
I don't know if I mentioned before but right before coughing and immediately after, I get really really super itchy all on my neck and in my throat and maybe even a little on my chest. My eyes are sort of watery and nose gets runny, but I assume that is just from all the coughing.
http://www.weather.com/health/pollen/forecast/USCA0500
This thing says there is no pollens or allergens,..
edit- over hour later, still not 100%. slight wheezing and lesser extent I cough out some phlegm every 5-10 min.
PS- its less like phlegm and more like spittle, it's sort of bubbly and slight yellow tint. Like if you had drank yellow gatorade.
edit2- been having random phlegm cough now (yellow/green) for the following couple of days. Almost picked up the allergy attack thing again the other day cleaning out the garage.
|
Had another episode last night after sneezing and coughing all day from something. Also felt like I was dryed out sinus because blowing so much nose. this one started almost as soon as I layed down in bed (maybe has something to do with position of body). This one probably the worst because extra symptoms. Like a heartburn type feeling and almost like I felt nausea and wanted to puke at points. I kept burping a lot too. And it seemed to last much longer than previous episodes as I couldn't really fall asleep for more than a couple of minutes for like 2-3 hours. It's also worth mentioning that I get this shitty taste in my mouth, like a metallic of chemical sort of taste that lingers around from the phlegm whenever I cough etc.
edit- 4-18-14 still have residual lung phlegm or whatever that I cough up every now and then, especially morning. Just tapers away slowly over the last week or whatever. Have noticed that the back of my tongue seems to be an orange color that i scrape off with tongue tool and toothbrush.

Sounds very much to me like you have a mold and animal allergy. Pet dander is in beds and cars even if you don't have any... and mold allergies can be terrible at night. I think I have the same thing you do only really really severe... I'm up now with it because the neighbor got a dog...
Try taking a benadryl before bed for a while and see if it helps. Steam your face, and breathe deeply of the steam when you get an attack. Put tea tree oil in the water. boil it on the stove. The hives and all that are definitely an allergic reaction. Maybe try a HEPA filter in the bedroom, true-hepa not hepa-type... allergen proof mattress encasement and pillow encasement. If your immune system is normal, it should completely take care of all this stuff.
Lysine is a good supplement for the immune system, and can help with that potential low grade lung infection from all the snot and shit in there. The Tea Tree oil will help with that too...

Everything you described points to some kind of allergy and you should go and get checked by a doctor to find out what it is. It could be that you cannot stand certain pollen or if the air is too dry or to humid or even too hot or too cold. Certain people even gets problems if the weather changes to drastically like going from hot to cold very fast. It could be a million things really.
|
jesus, just go see a doctor. they can draw blood and test that blood for a very broad allergy spectrum.
They also have easy ways to reduce and neutralize observed allergies trough simple injections once every week for 1.2 months.
Left alone, allergies only get worse.
|
In North America for allergies we usually get the runaround for years, and they just give you antibiotics and corticosteroids that destroy an already ailing immune system... (they get commissions too) and prescribe antihistamines to use for the rest of your life.... weather or not it helps. :s

Just vacuumed the house at about 7:30am , half way down the stairs and I started sneezing like crazy. Finished up the steps and proceeded to cough, sneeze, blow my nose and hock loogies for a good 5-10 minutes. Neck all itchy and shit too. Went outside and watered the garden while I died wheezing etc. Neighbors probably thought I was puking or something.
Slammed 10 oz of water asaply. Super tense in the upper chest and forced breathing.
Came back to finish the downstairs with paper towels in my nose and hand over my mouth. I think that mitigated it a bit, had a minor relapse of coughing and snot rockets. Went outside to water the front garden.
Now I'm chilling here still breathing at like 85% normal, every minute or so I cough and hock a looch.
This one doesn't feel the same as the other ones, but still sucks.
edit- now i'm hocking out the yellow loogies. bleh
edit- got hiccups hours later. Still feel this shitty lung.

Today is the 8th, had an attack at 3:15a this morning. Woke me up to go see the bloodmoon.
This one wasn't as bad as the others, but I've seriously been sort of phlegmy/coughy since the vacuum day off and on.
On monday I went to eat Thai Pepper and afterword I had an attack in the car. (maybe set off by dusty napkins since I was blowing my nose so much to spicy)
I will say that I had been vaping with a little e-cig since about July, probably isn't the cause and maybe has nothing to do with it, but I will stop because it has a chance that it's reducing the natural immune system in the lungs that makes me more susceptible to the dust I'm normally allergic to.
Someone on reddit mentioned to get skin prick tested and to get Allergra and zyrtec are both available in generics and should be stronger than claritin. and to consider a room filter Honeywell True HEPA Mini Tower Air Purifier, Black
Two things: 1. Maybe it's actually something else that shows up at a similar time to dust. 2. A skin prick test will test you for probably 80-100 items so that you can figure out what you're allergic to exactly, which then allows you to consider allergen immunotherapy so your body can be no longer allergic to whatever it is incorrectly attacking.
And one guy was suggesting a possibility of acid reflux, which doesn't really seem like it fits (considering the vacuum directly caused the flare up) and I've never really had any problems with gastrointestinal or digestion. Although, I guess in the same way that the E-cig could possibly weaken me, if hydrochloric acid is gettin in there it could cause the same right? (but wouldn't you feel it and that would hurt?)
|
Was for last 3 weeks or so, then I went to break out the old winter clothes and that was a big mistake. Dust immediately fucked me up, been sorta mildly bothered for 24 hours now. Same typical symptoms.
I want to get a dust mask and put the dusty clothes on my skin and see if that makes a difference.
|
Someone vacuumed yesterday, I went downstairs and walked in and out of the kitchen and it hit me again. All the shitty symptoms, trouble sleeping cuz of phlegm and breathing crap. I took a Aller-Fex 180mg fexofenadine hydrochloride tab 15 min ago. See if that helps any.
I might actually go to the clinic later, since I got a cold and some other shit anyway.
|
I think the pill finally started working. Cleared me up a bit, hard to tell since I'm sick simultaneuosly.
edit- about 1-2 hours ago the pill stopped working so well. Still have all the lingering effects that I would normally get, cough, running nose, phlegm, etc. I'm not even sure the pill even did anything.
