On a typical day, I love turning on a stream or two and leaving it on. I don’t even have a cable subscription, I just watch streams like TV. I enjoy watching high level SC2 and gleaning what I can about build orders and the metagame. Plus SC2 is such a great spectator game.

Because of my love for streams and dependency on TeamLiquid to provide me with such, I’ve been suffering in the last 2 weeks. Since the Heart of the Swarm beta was released. The number of Wings of Liberty streams has plummeted and I’ve watched very little of anything else. I don’t care for anything Heart of the Swarm just yet. And I have two semi-related reasons:

  1. The beta won’t represent the released version of Heart of the Swarm so why bother getting bent out of shape for no reason. 2) I don’t think Wings of Liberty has had its full potential explored.

  2. I don’t think Wings of Liberty has had its full potential explored

So starting off with Point #1, I don’t buy the hype at all. It is just a Beta. I played very little of the Wings of Liberty Beta so I never actually followed the competitive scene. I heard about the hilarity that was roaches: 1 supply and 2 armor. I recall how during one State of the Game, Idra raged about how Morrow won an IEM on the backs of Reapers. I still can’t believe that there were beta tournaments like the HDH Invitational and Day9's King of the Beta.

And now it seems like the same thing is happening again. The beta came out on September 4th. Three days later, the Warhound was already deemed overpowered and removed entirely. I’m really unsure how anyone can even follow the beta at all. It seems to move way way WAY too quick. I might even go as far as to say rushed since I remember the Wings of Liberty beta to be more polished (maybe because I only played it toward the end).

The most ludicrous event to happen was a tournament on Steptember 11th. Most players had literally a week’s worth of practice and I cannot believe that the games were at all worthwhile to watch. Does anyone remember the good old days of Wings of Liberty? I remember watching my first tournaments and streams and remembering how absurd the games could be. Does anyone remember the early days of GSL when all-ins were very common; where the BitByBit/Artosis meme came from? We now have 2 years of play on Wings of Liberty. Would I seriously watch a Beta tournament and expect the games to even be amusing? I doubt it.

The good old days?

Now in terms of my second point, I just don’t feel that Wings of Liberty has been fully explored. It also seems that there is a portion of the community who’s drooling at the chance to see Heart of the Swarm magically fix the game in one fell swoop. I don't think there is anything wrong with HotS, we just haven't had enough time into the game. I watched the WCS Europe Finals and I felt that both (Z)LoWeLy and (Z)VortiX showed some goofy styles that I’ve not really seen yet. Patch 1.5 was only released 2 months earlier and players have only recently seemed to figure out the changes. I think Blizzard should’ve done what they did with Brood War and StarCraft vanilla and released the 2 games sooner. But I could be wrong; maybe the jump to Brood War was too much. Can any old timers chime in with their thoughts about that change?

So I guess in the end, I just want to ask a question: Is there anyone else who’s waiting for the Heart of the Swarm release and not the beta? I probably won’t be touching the beta until I know the release date and the beta’s end date. In the meantime, I’m going to continue leveling up my Wings of Liberty skills. And I’ll be enjoying the rest of 2012's Wings of Liberty tournaments.

If I remember right, BW professional gaming started with a protoss named Zeus. The builds were cheesy for the most part, but before most people even thought about what it took to be a professional gamer, there were still people with 350 apm. There weren't APM checkers back then, and replays also came later. There were only VODs, and you used to be able to find the first pro gaming match, but I didn't see it when I searched for it. Even when SC2 was coming out, new builds were being made for BW.

Since there wasn't much of a pro league back then, I think a lot of people were more excited about there being an expansion. There was also a huge tourney thing that used to go on about 24/7. I remember being in the channel when I was younger, they would have registration for these tournies, in which you had to pay $50 to enter. The prizes were definitely big, and some people would play them all day long.

The game wasn't about being patched all the time. The game was pretty balanced at the time, and even though lots of people complain about the price of the spawning pool, just imagine not knowing how to stack mutas. As the game progressed, more and more people moved out of 1 base play, and started to do more of macro play. It was a lot more exciting, but it was also extremely frustrating. There were lots of people who would say things like, "I could beat boxer, just 4 pool him." even though he'd be playing a TvP.

When you look at the SC2 community, there were a lot of people who ended up becoming featured during and slightly after the beta, because they did OP builds. I'm not going to name names, but I remember one just 5 roach rushing every game, because roaches were OP during the beta at one point. Then terran got buffed, and lots of terrans started reaper rushing every game. A lot of the bad players claimed that zerg was OP if they macroed when SC2 first came out. I remember them complaining about me playing zerg, and whining for a T or P buff, because Z won the first GSL. When I watched the first GSL, I questioned whether or not Korea got the game the same week as America. The builds were really sloppy, and they were failing basic BOs hard. There was even a guy who was eating the mic at the first GSL when Artosis was interviewing him.

I was under the impression that people's APM was pretty abysmal in the early stages of competitive SC.
In Hungry Hungry Hippos there are no such constraints—one can constantly attempt to collect marbles with one’s hippo, limited only by one’s hippo-levering capabilities.

If you're talking about the very first progames, then yeah, the APM was pretty low. Lots of people didn't even use hotkeys, and they cheesed almost every game as I said.

I agree that the beta won't be anything like the main game so it's pretty much useless to practice in it or anything, although there were a few tournaments with pretty huge pricepools (the biggest of which Nerchio won without using any HotS units lol!).

The reason i watch the HotS streams is simply that i love watching new strategies come to light, which is also the reason i have been watching the dailies on the subject eventhough i haven't watched them in a while otherwise. I admit, in the start there weren't much to come after with the Warhound and all, but right now i think it's pretty exiting, especially the mothership core changes everything. Simultaneously, the protoss can play more greedy because they have more defense in the beginning and move out with less care because of recall. Ofcourse there is also the many gimmicky things that you can do with recall/energize but i'm completly alright with that, i even like it, because there are also the core things that you can do with them. I'm not sure how it will be adopted but I'd think that energizing an empty nexus up to full energy when you know that you don't need the energy on the MC otherwise is a great mechanic and forces decisions (do I want to be more safe or have more chrono?)

It should be noted that I don't even play protoss. I'm a zerg, but the MC will just make the protoss so much more fun to fight against (most probably more frustrating as well ). There will be a lot more moveouts and a lot more action. I think it may be alittle too strong with recall as it is now. It will probably be changed to 125 energy, but it does make for some interesting games, where toss potentially picks people appart with small armies everywhere. Think blizz is on the right track here.

I have watched quite a few different HotS streams while I'm at work though mostly I have gone back to watching WoL streams. I guess this is simply because I have been actually playing the beta myself and so watching someone playing with the new units or trying build order x isn't that appealing when I can attempt to try it myself. Though I do usually enjoy watching streams far more than playing.

Regarding the fact that not all of the WoL strategies have been explored.. I don't believe the strategies would be fully explored for quite a long time .. another year, perhaps even longer before we would see the game's strategies evolve to the games potential.

without the time people put into the closed beta theres a smaller chance things will be balanced.

even if things change or not there are many changes that will stay in the release version and they have already grown accustomed to the various situations they will need to avoid with new units. different (new) hotkeys that are introduced will be second nature by the time tournaments switch over.

so i think the time people put in is very useful, not in the very short term but longer term.

Now if you are watching this expecting to get the same out of it as you did watching a released WoL then i dont think you are going to be very happy, I myself like watching seeing tons of goofy builds etc..

to each his own though
