Part XIV: Water Temple Difficulty, Myth or Legit?

Link to blog: http://www.teamliquid.net/blog/LoN

Hey readers, as I'm sure some of you are aware. 1) I'm falling behind in my goal! and 2) This is the one where I talk about the water temple in Orcarina of Time! Well fuck yeah. Since the last one ended at the fire temple, I guess that's where I shall begin. THE MUTHA FUCKIN WATER TEMPLE.

Water Temple Difficulty Myth?

Alright, Im going to start off by talking about this. The myth is that the Water Temple is OMG SOOOO HARD<HARDEST> TEMPL EVAR/! Well, I'm going to stomp this myth by saying that this statement is untrue in more ways than it is true. This is said by players who were very young playing OoT and didn't use the map (such as me) or for inexperienced Zelda players, who have never played the NES versions of Zelda, specifically Adventure of Link. In that game the last temple is about twice as difficult as the water temple, and there are a few others that would be as difficult through the difficulty of combat and the odd mechanics in that game.

The ma fucking water temple

What I will give you though is the Water Temple, is easily the hardest dungeon in the game. Not only is it the hardest, but it is the best designed temple in this game, maybe even in the series. It is fucking brilliant. Employees working to design new innovative temples should look back to how this temple was designed. It pushed the boundaries of how a 3d zelda could use new mechanics to make a very hard and very fun temple. Using the things that didn't work that well in 3d (hookshot and swimming) and using them together in a temple in a way that is amazing.

Not so bad

Anyways onto what I thought was really hard about the water temple. Fucking shadow link. I had no long magic bar, and no goron sword. So I asked a friend, wtf how did you beat this fucker. He was like hammer op. So I grabbed my hammer and it didn't work at all. Then I tried again by the tree hit him 5 times and he was dead. But I guarentee fighting shadow link with just a master sword is the hardest fight in the game. Fuck that shit. People complained about that block behind the longshot, but I think I accidently found that everytime I played the game, its obvious.

This temple was alot easier than when I was young because I learned how to use the map and compass, which are given to you VERY early in the temple. Developers giving you the tools you need!! It makes you use your brain, which is very fun. The only other thing to make this temple flawless, woulda been to make the iron boots equipped to a c button. Fuck that pause unpause shit omfg.

Also the water temple boss was fucking annoying.

Bitch

Next I did the shadow temple, because I went and seen the village on fire and was like fuck. Then I got the song and lens of truth and just did it. The lens of truth was kinda a bitch to get, I didn't remember at all. But the guy in the blue gave you a good hint so it was fair game. This is what the well reminded me of when I looked up out of it.

The ring, Link Edition

Anyways, onto the shadow temple. This temple scared the shit out of me. All those creepy bloodshot eyed women pictures everywheres. God damn this game is dark. Also the guy with blood all over him and a million hands and the scary face. How was this game rated E??? I found the shadow temple to be fun, but really easy. Just keep your lens of truth on most of the time and all the puzzles are easy. I heard people found the platforming a bit tricky, but I never had a problem with it. The dungeon's treasure Is fucking sweet though. Hover boots. Who doesn't want hover boots.

This dungeon is saved by the boss. This guy is pretty fucking hard. Also his is just fucking cool. A giant bongo playing demo. Like who thinks of this shit?

Next was the spirit temple. I was like didn't I do this as a kid. And was confused when I went to the dungeon as an adult. Then I realized I could get the song and warp back as a kid. And all was good. This temple felt fairly simple puzzle wise. The combat was a bit tricky vs iron knuckles. Because he hurt sooo much. The fighting with him was fun though. The treasure in this dungeon is badass as fuck the mirror shield, love it. The red outline matches the red tunic so I always change from being blue to red after I grab it. Also the light reflection puzzles were neat.

The boss was good, brought in some witches with humorous lines, the boss battle was more annoying then hard. As you had to shoot them with there own magic but it was a pain in the ass to actually reflect it in the right direction. It felt out of place in the game, but maybe the developers were like shit, were scaring the kids too much. Felt almost like a banjo kazooie esque boss.

Twinrova

Im going to skip most of ganons tower, I will say that I like the idea of breaking all the different barriers, it was like 6 mini temples. It was fairly quick and easy yet it was fun. Getting the golden gauntlets and lifting those rocks was ridiculous, that last half damage upgrade was sooo helpful fighting ganon though.

Onto ganondorf. Ganondorfs pre cut scene was amazing, hes just playing piano not giving a fuck, having zelda trapped. Evil laughs at you, it was just a really good build up to the fight. Onto the actual fight, its just some energy tennis. But the most epic part was manually aiming the light arrow, that was a really nice input. It put you more into the battle imo.

Then the bit about running away from the crashing temple with zelda was neat and added to the epicness of the ending. Then fighting the pic Ganon was really cool cause you were like yeah I beat that fuck. BUT NO, hes back. Its a fairly easy fight, as long as you don't run low on magic for your arrows. Then you have to do some weird shit. Its really cool when you lose the master sword, then get it back for the killing blow. A lot less epic if you have the goron sword though. Overall, amazing ending for an amazing game.

Overall Opinion Review:
Pros:
-Combat mechanics work great
-amazingly designed world and temples
-story proceeds and characters are memorable
-side quests that can keep you busy after the game is done(skulltulas, big goron sword, etc.)
-Items translate to 3d very well
-Music was amazing
-Bosses were big and epic

Cons:
-Navi and owl

By todays standards, I would give this game a 10/10 its still a must beat adventure game for anyone, and by the standards of back when it came out I would give it a 10.5/10. This game took everything ever other game on the n64 was doing and perfected it. It set the bar really high for adventure games in 3d.

Coming up Next:

Majora's mask.

The Water temple was just annoying with all the back&forth and the equipping&unequipping of the boots.

When I replayed OoT I played it on the GC version though, and the way the controller is just doesn't work for Zelda. I could never beat Bongo Bongo with how shitty they mapped the C buttons -_-'

I need to go back and beat it sometime...

This is EPIC, I can't wait to read all your Zelda blogs Mementoss. I too, would like to go back and complete every Zelda game (hardcore fan since I was a kid).

Overall which game did you enjoy the most? Twilight Princess is revered as "The Best Zelda game ever" , would you agree to that statement after playing it?(I'm assuming you did)

Bonus: SICKEST Nerd Chills. Dying to Blue Wizzrobes and Blue Dark Knights when I was a mere 6-7 years old all came back to me........good game.

I think that probably one of the biggest blocks in the water temple was that when you're in the center tower, you raise the water level there, and you're supposed to go back down into a new hole that was uncovered by a block now floating in the raised water level. It's pretty straightforward from there.

On the 3DS version, it will point that out to you when you raise the water level, making it clear that you really did open a new path. And the iron boots are a "C" item as well! No more clunky pause menu mechanics to deal with anymore!

I thought the Stone Tower Temple was the hardest temple in both games and I also thought the way they designed the Great Bay Temple was epic. The water-wheel went so deep that it felt kind of creepy.

Anyway, good luck on MM and WW.

This is amazing about the iron boots, thanks for the note!

When I was young, I never found the block behind the longshot and still managed to beat the temple 3 or 4 times somehow. Took very creative use of the warp song and some really hard jumps to make haha

The Water Temple was a pain for me because I never thought of looking underneath that block inside the center pillar of the temple when you raised the water as a little boy, so I looked through every room over and over trying to find that blasted key I needed to open the door at the waterfall with the descending blocks. I eventually caved in and read the strategy guide at Blockbuster when I went to go rent something on a weekend and did it immediately upon arriving home (needless to say, I didn't really play much of what I rented that weekend).

As a temple it isn't that hard if you have the knowledge of the key locations. There are some cool hookshot antics in there though, and Shadow Link is a tough sub-boss until you know that weapons that don't match the Master Sword make him easy to beat.

Pretty much every water-themed temple in any Zelda game throws me off. I think I just hate them (and water levels in general) so much that it tilts me (I use hate liberally, I actually love the challenge). Hell, I had a hard time with Jabu Jabu's belly for awhile (Barnade overwhelmed me).

The only disappointment in that game for me was the Bottom of the Well, being an entirely simple dungeon that took no time at all to beat. I would've liked it to be a bit more epic as a child dungeon (instead of feeling like a secret hole out in the field), akin to what they did with the child version of the Spirit Temple. Joyous was I when in Master's Quest it was much more complex.

Wow, I'm apparently the first vote for Fire Temple as hardest.

Seriously, I hate that place. The mazes and timed obstacle courses all over the place give me soooo much trouble, it's ridiculous.

Also, Water Temple > others.
