I started to wonder who today makes music with the deepness of Pink Floyd while staying accessible.

Someone who could play a live at Pompeii and it would totally make sense.

The music is rich, the lyrics tells a story.

The music gives you a feeling of freedom. Musicians are able to perform the way they feel that day. The song might go for 26 minutes or maybe 3 minute in the radio....

or

While the radio edit doesn't make sense onec you know the totality of the song, I'd still listen to it over many stuff playing on the radio.

That song is about Syd Barrett who was a bit too crazy for Pink Floyd (Too much LSD?), and the day they recorded this song, Syd appeared at the studio (Impossible to recognize, overweight, bold...) sat in the lobby without saying anything. It was the first time they saw him in years and didn't even understand who it was.

We are still lucky they are alive and performing. You don't get second hand stuff... No lipsync and autotune.

Sometimes they play it unplugged, one man, one guitar. It still gets to you.
2 man, 2 guitar and you end up crying for no reason.

or sometimes "Hey, what's there, oh a bell, let me get my hammer"

Ok now I got your attention.
I couldn't find the live where an old bearded man read a text in the begining of the song... And i'm very sad panda .

EDIT: Found it:

And now get me the name of the guy still making his music in his cave and I should know about.

I don't dare to compare Trentmoller with Pink Floyd but it is a step in the direction I'm looking for:

There is no Pink Floyd "of our days". Im not saying PF is the best band ever but they are unique and its impossible to compare them.

Edit: Its interesting that you choose trentemoeller as example for a PF successor because i too feel that some electronic music and musicians are closer to PF than most of the rock music that was made in the last 20 years.

The best version of the song IMO. The backup girls nail it. Probably my favorite song of all times.

As for similar bands? I hesitate to say any could come close enough. I've been listening to a lot of black keys lately, to me they seem to have a lot of the same soul put into the music that gilmour was able to put into pink floyds. None of it feels manufactured, just good genuine music.

Then again they are completely different styles of music so it probably doesn't help you much.

Damn EMI has the first one blocked for us Finns

And yeah thank you! Helps me. I don't need in the same style necessarly.

Although David Gilmour is a guest to this song, it's something great .

Yeah I think if one of those obscure and talented guy would get nuts and go in a cave make something for five years, something out of format, one 50 min song where every single note count, it would come close!
Yet Jean-Michel Jarre got the show, but the music is not there.

You dont like Jean-Michel Jarres music? Blasphemy!

If you are looking for a guy whos talented, nuts and makes good music Aphex Twin could be your man.

Also you should definitely check out Minilogue if you dont already know them:

Hmm, maybe Spock's Beard. But they lack the psychedelic side.

Good music is not that accessible (in terms of exposure) as before, but it's still there.

Comparable to PF? Well that could spur a debate 100 or more pages long, but you will find very good artists if you look for them and keep an open mind about music.

When you asked for recommendations, are you looking for something good in lyrics and/or music? Or for something similar to PF? (in genre, style, mood, etc)

Great stuff.. I remember having two minilogue vinyl disc back in the days.

You misinterpreted my comment. I love JMJ, just that his greatness is not exactly in the area I'm currently looking.

I leave that part open. I don't weant to debate . I want people to post their opinion if 1. they like Pink Floyd. 2. They have music they listen that they could match in their playlist with Pink Floyd (but is modern)
Very open minded and I appreciate so much different music. I tend to know a lot of music from my DJ background and I think the more you listen to different music, the more easily you approach stuff you don't know and get bored of the music you know faster. Yet Pink Floyd doesn't get to that "boring" point (exept maybe album version of another brick in the wall :D (and that one is still awesome if you listen to the full album))

David Gilmour is the most famous alumni of the secondary school I went to. And he's a bloody good guitarist.
I still need to listen to more Pink Floyd though.

I fucking love PF. I guess my vote would go to something like Aussie Floyd (cover band) but that is kind of a cop out.
Unfortunately it seems rather unlikely that something like PF will happen again with the way music nowadays is way less coherent, with more trends and a more diverse music scene. Everyone does not listen to the same few bands anymore and if they do they are usually very bad, or at least does not have text that make you think or feel anything.

That is what I love about PF, it can stir up emotions time and time again, unlike any other music I have ever heard.

Some of Gotye's songs remind me of PF in the way they are trying to express a certain message(or as you said the lyrics tell a story), at the very least some of his music videos seem visually influenced / inspired by PF.

Wow, you're in for a surprise

Well I hope :p

Their 2 latest albums Lateralus, and 10kdays2kill is where it's at. You can research a bit about Lateralus and be wonderfully surprised from its depth as a piece of art on the whole. Its structure, and the poetic lyrics. To my eyes, there's no big separation of its greatness compared to The Wall.

I think for me that would be either Trans-Siberian Orchestra or Kyteman. Both are very good imo.

Trans-Siberian Orchestra: The moment

Without comparing styles, Radiohead is by far the closest in terms of artistic creativity. I think people mentioned Tool as well.
Although if you enjoy PF's musical style you probably won't like Radiohead ;( (with exception of their third album OK Computer)

*Edit forgot to add some songs for ppl that are interested ;P

Radiohead also has some amazing acoustic performances:

Just heard about these guys the other day, and this song definitely has some early pink floyd sounds. They are a pretty nice blend of 70s psych and power pop, I would recommend it for sure.

Since my first Porcupine Tree link was removed, might as well post another song from them. Pretty big nod to Pink Floyd's 'Dogs'.

Also Ayreon, because some Jethro Tull style flute is never a bad thing.

What Pink Floyd are we talking about ? Syd Barret's period, or the period of boring pretentiousness ? If the latter, Radiohead is by far more creative.
