Am I mad bro? well.. yeah.

Unforfunately I find myself shaking my head in anger even when I win games (mid masters MMR for reference, I used to play a lot). But I get so angry, especially when my opponents play gimmicky, that is causes me to go on permanent-tilt easily, go on losing streaks after that etc. Ultimately it makes me afraid to ladder because I don't want to go on tilt etc (cause in real life I'm an extremely nice and calm person). I don't even, usually, express my anger in physical ways (just not that type of person) such as banging your fists against the table.. instead I let it just boil inside of me.

I think some of it stems from a "false ego" ie I think I'm better than my opponents because of my mechanics and high apm (120-130 new-sc2 apm compared to most people's 80 or 70) which gives me a over-grown sense of self expectance, ie I expect myself to do better and that is why I get angry. When I lose games, I say in the back of my mind.. "I'm going to look back at how badly I played in this game for days" (in reality I don't usually), but I think that I will.

So because of this lack of wanting to play to avoid losing streaks / anger, I've only played ~80 games this season when I should be at 600+ if I was very active (which I would like to be.. but I just can't). The thing is, I do play a bit more on my off race account where I don't "expect" myself to do good because I'm off racing. I'm also just devasted after a long losing streak and it actually affects me in real life for a day or so afterwards (i'm talking 10+ game losing streaks, no idea how they happen but they do when I'm on tilt).

So yeah.. should I just quit sc2 and find other games that don't make me so angry? I surely don't get this angry when I play MWF3 as much as I dislike the game.

if not, how can I change my mindset to not get angry / reduce ladder stress? Any types of things you tell yourself while laddering to not stress out?

btw, the ridiculous amount of BM people in master league doesn't help either. knowing that when you lose your opponent is going to say "get out" or when you win your opponent will insult you, is not a great environment either. I have no idea why people say the SC2 community is tame and nice, it's not.

Do you even have fun when you play starcraft? Why would you play starcraft if you only get angry? Why don't you try to have more fun with the game then trying to win every game and doing the exact same thing every single time you play? If you do that, winning starts to lose it's taste and the game becomes more fun and less stressful since you don't care about those gadamn points that don't actually matter.

You could take a break from starcraft after losing 3 games and do jumping jacks until you feel like throwing up and then play more games and see if you're still mad. Try doing some crazy ass shit 10 games in a row, some crazy shit that might work or it might fall completely flat, and after see if you still care about winning, and if you do, do some more jumping jacks till you feel like throwing up and then do more crazy shit. Do so much crazy shit til you feel like you're gonna throw up.

You should take a week off the game, relax a bit, and focus more on your strategy, also don't think about it as a must win situation and dont punish yourself for your mistakes in game, its a learning experience anyway. you're supposed to be winning 50% of your games anyway right?

Starcraft can be a very frustrating game since you work so hard to win and every small mistake can be frustrating since you know you shouldn't be doing it.
changing mentality is going to take a while. it's not something that will happen overnight, but the more actively you think about it, it's just a game, exercise never helped me, but if I'm losing too much and starting to get angry, just do something easier.

i.e. when I'm having a bad day at starcraft I log on to league of legends and micro 1 single unit for 30 min. it's very relaxing in a way. just find nullify your frustration. for some it's jumping jacks, for some its league of legends, for some a hot bath. find what will help you get rid of it and don't keep playing after you feel it cuz chances are your mindset will make you keep losing and it'll just snowball against you. ^_^ gl

I think you're right about the false ego thing. The problem is that you have an expectation of what ought to happen, and anything that messes with that expectation ruins the nice illusion you had in your head of who you are. You're getting frustrated that you can't meet your unreasonable expectations.

It's helpful if you can stop buying into all the ideas you have about how good you -should- be. The only thing that's actually real is how good you are right now. When you catch yourself thinking "Oh, for fucks sake, I can't believe I lost to that. I shouldn't have lost to that." Pause for a moment, breathe, and then let that go. It's unrealistic. Everybody loses; the best players in the world still lose somewhere between 20-40% of their games. I think if you want to get past the whole thing, you need to really focus in on what you're expecting from yourself and ask yourself honestly if that's reasonable. It takes time to improve.

The other big thing is that you wouldn't treat somebody else the way you treat yourself for losing a few games. Be kinder to yourself! You don't need to be perfect to be happy. If you keep playing and thinking about the game, you'll get better at it. There's no need to be so harsh on yourself while that's happening.
This, too, shall pass.

Yes. StarCraft is a game, you should only play it if it makes you feel good.

I have three points:

-80 games is a lot.
-"Gimmicky" play is a part of StarCraft. If you don't enjoy it on any level, find a game which doesn't have 'gimmicky' play.
-BM is going to be common on any mainstream public service. A game only matures when its fans do, after many many years.

I think you care a lot about winning and losing, so I'm not sure any competitive game would be right for you. If you want no gimmicks, pure intellect, little to no BM, you can try Chess or Go (but if you need to win to have fun, those games will frustrate you). But I think what you really want is some random co-op / single player games that are designed to let you win.

Your problem is that you are playing tough games against people who don't necessarily know as much about the game as you do, but still manage to take you to your limit. You know they are more casual, perhaps they are "micro heroes" IE you watch the replay and they stop macroing a lot to micro around some try-hard units... Or maybe they get you with something hidden and take the game from you easily..

Yep, that's why I get mad at Starcraft as well. If you really don't want to quit, do what I do:

1) feel free to be horribly BM. If your opponent played like a "faggot", tell him so. Anyone who cheeses expects this sort of reaction, their feelings won't be hurt, and it makes you feel better.

2) Keep weights by your computer. When you get mad, stand up, stretch, and start doing arm curls or raises. Maybe pace back and forth while you do it - Get your blood pumping for about 5 minutes, stop thinking about the game.

3) Once you've cleared your head, go watch the replay through once or twice. I say twice because you could really watch once from your perspective, and once from your opponent's afterwards. Its good to see if you made macro errors, its also good to see how your enemy decided to do what he did that got you so mad in the first place.

Or just quit. I mean, SC2 is a great spectator sport, not everyone has to play. But don't worry about getting mad, everyone does sometimes. Just find ways to deal with it, as long as you aren't breaking your own stuff or hunting down your opponents offline, pretty much any other response is OK.

I think you play too much. Like in all honestly if you get mad about something that should entertain you, then you need a job/school something. Everyone does get a little angry at the game from time to time. I get angry when I feel powerless to stop the death ball of a protoss, but i don't raging, just say GG and move on. Play for fun or dont play at all.

Bingo.

But yeah, I'm in the same situation (albeit I'm top Diamond instead of mid Masters, but whatever) I get frustrated at the BM of the players and it makes me want to not play competitively very much. This season, I started off trying hard, got to rank #3, and then I just got sick of it. Now I find myself playing custom games (Special Forces, Nexus Wars, etc.) and I enjoy my time a lot more, lol. Once in a while I feel like playing a 1v1 again, and then I go back and am like "oh yeah, this is why I hate playing..."

You've hit the nail on the head with this post, in regards to how I feel. I feel *exactly* like you do about the whole ladder experience of SC2. Last year around this time when I actually started to play SC2 more often, ladder of course, I thoroughly enjoyed the way the game gave me freedom to do whatever builds I like. At the time I was in Silver and won most of my games, playing the game how I wanted. But after a while the game needed to be more competitive for me, so I began to watch a lot of streams and replays with the aim of improving my play. After a while I came into Platinum, and topped my division with constant playing. It wasn't fun though anymore, and the game was a lot more like a chore for me. I knew I needed to keep my ladder points above the rest of the division, but inside I also felt that I did not really want to play. I became like a robot, just playing in order to rack up those points. Some satisfaction came with my eventual entrance into the Diamond league, but nothing else has changed since then. Nowadays I win 60-70% of the time, but regularly go on losing streaks and then I become just as you described in the OP - very mad although I myself am a person with a kind heart. The game just isn't fun anymore.

One way I found to stem this frequent rage inside of me was to switch to playing some CSS again, to get away from SC2 for a while, but my competitive nature failed me once again. The same type of feelings crept up in me whilst playing CSS, but luckily I soon realised that I have to help myself. Yesterday in fact, I at last remedied my problem with both SC and CS (see what I did there?) to some extent, but even today I sort of got angry when I played a game of Peepmode with about 7 players in it, mostly bronze/silver players. But you see, somehow none of them wanted to play, and I ended up playing 3 games in a row against a diamond player. The others just kept spectating, and luckily for me I won the first 2 games with straight up play. But you know what? In the third game, he cannon rushed me, prompting me to BM him. That was saddening for me though, as I knew that I did not want to do that again. I wanted to rid myself from the rage forever, but in this way other players induced it in me. I soon quit the game, and after that I watched the replay. Even more disheartening for me was to read the chat of the "bronze" players whilst we were playing, seeing that they were totally biased towards me and constantly thought that I would lose. That made me feel very bad about myself. But why do I feel this way at the moment? Of course I was better than my opponent.

That last scenario has actually happened quite a few times when I played Peepmode, when fellow spectators always thought that I would lose when I actually had won. I don't know what to feel anymore. It looks to me as if I won't even be accepted in apparent "fun" custom games, so where do I belong?

You need to chill out for a bit, take a week off, and/or play customs for a week and just chill dude. Its time you take the game as a fun game and not your livelyhood . Basically what damn cats said,

Whenever i get into a match I know that there is a 50% chance i will lose. Why is that? because I'M BAD, I'm gold/plat level. Perfectly fine for a guy who can only play maybe 6 games a week on a good week, and none on a bad week. You play a lot more than me, and I think the correct way to go about this is to
A) know that you have room to improve, which is fine, we all do, and therefore when you lose, don't get angry, get better
B) as you get better, you will win more until you start to lose again
also, remember to party () when you play dude, if you don't have fun, remember that smiley and maybe you will

mmm i've been attempting a bit of a break so I can refocus myself when I get back to dedicated gameplay post school. Just doing things like CSL, UNM was awesome this week btw, no drama just fun games and great conversation even though it was a playoff match.

And yes it is "gimmicky" play that would cause most of my rage as well but now I try to place more emphasis on how I am scouting and even just trying split control groups for my army to allow more freedom. And if you aren't having fun take a break. My coordinator has told me this multiple times during the CSL season even though I am doing very well in CSL. I always shrug him off though because I love team leagues with my current team/school.

LOL, the SCII community for the most part is not nice. The TL community I'd say is nicer to an extent, but this is a competitive game. No one is in it except for themselves or to cheer their favorite player. This is the mindset most people play with, including yourself and myself. The problems lies within the things you already discussed.
I have a simple philosophy: Fill what's empty. Empty what's full. Scratch where it itches. Alice Roosevelt Longworth
