Since I have moved out I have lived without television: One of the best decisions in my life thus far ( Easily top 20, maybe even top 10).
There is nothing wrong with watching movies or series that you like, I do that as well, but brainlessly turning on the TV and watching the first thing in sight is bad for you.
You know it , right? Do I have to explain, why? Okay, but real short: 1. It consumes a lot of time. 2. You dont learn anything useful. 3. It's not a social interaction with other persons. 4. It's bad for your creativity. 5. It consumes a LOT of time.
Why not play an instrument instead? Or read a book? Or go for a walk( kay, you dont have to do this one, but you might as well) Or learn something for school/college/your job instead. Explore your interests, become creative, do something worthy of your time.
I know it's a big step to get rid of television, but you wont regret it. As long as it is still in the house you will always be tempted. Now you even have a reason to visit friends more often (" I dont have a Tv, can I watch this with you?").
I know this is not the best written blog and I'm actually quiet sure I wont change anybodies opinion /lifestyle, but maybe if you guys hear it often enough from me and other ones you will think about it.
Oh and btw a lot of the reasonning applies to watching random streams of starcraft as well. Get specific. Select the event you want to watch (GSL, MLG , whatever), or say "I want to watch (insert player namer here)'s stream in the afternoon for 1 hour. But dont just go on teamliquid and watch any stream, because that WILL steal you hours and hours of time.
Im not on facebook either , not because I want to be anti-establishment (okay maybe a little), but because it's a time thief and I simply dont need it ( and neither would you ).
i think not having a t.v is a good idea. I have one but rarely watch it. I only watch the history channel for a few shows :0 and maybe ill turn it on when im going to bed. it is much better to watch a t.v. series you like on the internet than on t.v IMO
i haven't watched any "real" television by myself for something like 5 to 8 years now, can't even remember the time. Admittedly, i live in germany, and television here has become _extremly_ bad by now, just stupid casting shows and "reality shows" with paid actors directed to look and behave like the most ridiculous of stereotypes. I still watch quite a few tv series on my computer, but only on demand, not consuming any dumb content around it all the time. I don't feel like i am missing out on anything in that regard.

Guess why I'm not gaming. But I didnt want to add that to Op cause, you know, this is a gaming forum.
I'm happy for you that your going to a concert. Though other than being inspired by a song, you should take note on how much culture has changed. TV and facebook really aren't an enemy of any sorts. If FB has become such a time sink, then you aren't using it properly. You can put up a single text asking if anyone was up to do something, and bam you just messaged all your friends.
As you stated this is a gaming forum but you don't game, yet have a decent amount of posts. Whats the bigger time sink aimlessly browsing the internet or watching a favorite tv show?
read my op , i feel you could have saved yourself the post. watching a favorite tv show is absolutely fine, randomly watching bullsh** is the problem, same applies to fb.
also it's not like this song had anything to do with my decision to get rid of my tv. i just thought it would fit to the blog.
I havn't used the TV in my house for over 7 months, and i enjoy it/ I always hated TV anyways. Also the RHCP show in houston got moved back like 6 months, its terrible
I would never trash my tv, or suggest to to anyone. Watching random Bravo housewives/whores for hours at a time being bitchy for little to no reason is one thing, but personally, I use my T.V to become informed - the discovery channel, the news, perhaps catch a rerun of a movie or have a pick-me-up laugh from comedy central. It definitely has its pros.
With that being said, I can completely agree that you shouldn't spend an excess amount of time with it. But then again, that could be said about anything - hell, even me reply to this topic, could, and probably is, time being put to waste (no offense!)
What if television is one of my interests? Not everyone wants to go out and accomplish something creative/entralling with their time, and some people want to get away from doing just that by watching tv.
I'm going to look at your points in more detail:
1. It consumes a lot of time. Says who? Compared to what?
2. You dont learn anything useful. Wrong. Television is the basis for at least half the conversations that happen around me. The only thing people seem to talk about more is facebook. Television is also where a lot of people get their news, learn to cook, or learn about history. It's where people watch sports, awards shows, and large performances.
3. It's not a social interaction with other persons. Television is a social interation with other persons 100% of the time whether you are watching with a group of people, or watching something that you will have a conversation about with someone later. Not to mention many people are ALWAYS watching the same channel as you.
4. It's bad for your creativity. Huh?
5. It consumes a LOT of time. We're back to number 1 because why not make it an even five? Television consumes as much time as you choose to allocate it.
Television is a very relaxing hobby if that's what you need to unwind.

Can't help but say your wrong there... Gaming is much better than Television. Though people should just do what makes them happy as long as it doesn't harm others.

I think the point to take away is that how you spend your time doing something is more important than the activity itself. You can be the same stereotypical fat nerdy guy who sits in front of the TV as the guy who sits in front of the computer. Or you can do both and break the stereotype all together.
Personally, I learn a lot from watching TV, but that's because I usually watch things like Discovery Channel rather then E!. Watching TV with others can be quite the social activity, especially comedy shows like Tosh.0. I don't see how it inhibits your creativity at all. How much time it consumes is personal responsibility.
As someone else said, moderation is key. If you can't keep a TV in the house without turning into a couch potato then by all means get rid of it, but I don't feel like I have a problem with that.(I SAID I DON'T HAVE A PROBLEM, K?! lol j/k)
i agree, though there are a few shows i do like, though i prefer to watch those with friends xD sadly most of my friends are at different colleges (im at cc so it's not like i can just walk to someones room and watch tv with them :/)
i have not had a tv since i moved out for college, now i have one that i use mostly for hooking up to comp/watching movies once in a while or sporting events, dont use it for anything else really.

As i don't watch Televison hardly im going to use the analogy of me with a laptop + internet
1. I think i spend at least 4 hours everyday on my laptop instead of doing my homework instead.
2. Most things i learn on the internet are really superficial and have no importance in my daily life besides saying "Did you know that there was a guy during WW2 who took out 3 bunkers by himself?! (Bad ass of the week thread :D)"
3. I will admit internet is a social interaction, but i personally prefer face time rather than facebook time, not everybody goes on the same websites as me. Except for Reddit and Facebook nobody i know goes on TED or Teamliquid
4. I'll switch back to TV because internet is another argument in this area IMO. Television i actually do agree with you that television sparks interest because after watching an hour documentary on The Universe, space seems pretty cool.
5. TV/Internet is highly addictive, for tv if i am flipping the channels and a movie i have not seen in a few years pops on im more likely going to watch it.
With internet oh god Teamliquid when tournaments are going on absolutely KILL me, take ASUS tournament for example, i was going to do work friday but then i went on TL saw that the tournament was on, saw Stephano playing Koreans and i got no work done there after.
Yes it is all dependent on you controlling your own behavior i'm not hiding behind TV/internet saying its not my fault it is 100%, all i am arguing is that with the ease of access everyone has to TV/Internet it is very easy to become distracted and honestly just spend you days in front of the computer. I do very much so and i know it is a habit which needs fixing.
Now do i think we should get rid of this? No, we would still be in the dark ages with out it, which brings us back to your last statement
Television is a very relaxing hobby if that's what you need to unwind.
, i wont argue with that it is important as a hobby. But i wish it where so easy.
So watching TV is basically the equivalent to reading reddit. :D
haha I agree with you, I haven't watched TV in foreeeeeeever. Closest thing is netflix and I don't even think that counts.
Just the shit on TV these days is genuinely infuriating. How do shows like Jersey Shore even exist? And every single news station is biased/retarded as shit. W.e I'll just stick to Star2 streams!

Have you never been in a clan or played DOTA games with your friends or something?
I've been in a clan for a few years now in L2 and I do spend a lot of time with them on vent whenever I'm on PC, but I still don;t consider it a proper social interaction.

The alternatives the OP listed are far more superior in how one spends his/her time. Sorry, but people don't call it the idiot box for nothing.
1. Yes it consumes time. While you mindlessly watch your Jersey Shore, that time wasted could have been put into learning new vocab or skillset. Oh, but wait you tell me that you learn new forensic science shit from CSI? Nope, still as mindless, and doesn't beat reading a book.
2. Wow award shows? Man, what does one learn from award shows? The new Vera Wang dress that Kate Beckinsale wore to accentuate her curves? So beneficial to reinforcing one's intellect. Sports? Hory crap! What better way to segragate people even more! Awesome, I'm learning sooooo much!
But WAIT, there's more! Let's top it all off with endless bombardments of advertising! Buy this buy that because you will get pussy if you do. hurr durrrrr. I'm learning so much--it's like the adult Sesame Street! Cool!!!!!
3. How about the ones watching it alone? Who do they have brain stimulating conversations with? Once again, mindless zombies.
4. Huh?
5. Read 1. Or would you rather watch it on TV?
Of course, I'm a hypocrite thought because I love streaming Netflix and Internet/Gaming is as bad as televizion. I can't tell you how you spend your time, but please don't be delusional.

At least switching channels on the remote wont give you carpal tunnel. xD

Lol that was my first reaction too. In fact the OPs reasoning against TV could be applied against anything that isn't school or work. Why have a gf? It consumes a lot of time, you don't learn anything useful, you'll have less social interaction with your friends, it consumes a lot of money. Why go to the movies? Why wake up in the morning?
If we follow this to it's logical conclusion, we would all be Amish farmers toiling away in the fields and shunning technology.
The things we do with our freetime are all just ways to waste time; afterall the definition of freetime is time spent not working, learning etc. The key is to find an enjoyable way to waste time--that's called living.
On February 28 2012 06:48 Zaranth wrote: You forgot to mention that you save a lot of money not paying for cable.
There is a good case for living without cable though. While in college, for the three years I lived on my own I only had the super basic cable (like local stations only). I found that over time I wasn't that big of a deal; everything on the networks I could watch on Hulu and a good majority of the shows I watched on other channels would have episodes posted online. Really the only thing I missed was the sports channels and BBC America. Besides that, HBO is probably the only thing of value that you get with cable.
Television is a tool. And like any tool, it can be used for good or evil. Learn some self-control and you can enjoy the benefits of television (entertainment in moderation, education and information, learning about new products that you may like via the advertisements) without allowing yourself to be drawn into the negative consequences.
Blogger probably also believes people shouldn't have guns cuz then they'd be tempted to murder people too.

In the end people will always find things to idle/procrastinate on and waste time. If not TV, the internet. If not internet, books. Etc.
But I agree with the op about making better use of your time, maybe not completely getting rid of your tv but having better self control, telling yourself to stop watching tv because there are other things you could be doing, or stop reading teamliquid and go to sleep haha

Even if there is nothing to do, people would prefer doing nothing to doing anything. Humans don't like to think all that much.
