I honestly don't see the market growing for women as a result. If you do come back do it during the HotS beta and join as many tournaments as possible.

For eSports to spread and become more popular, it cannot disenfranchise half of the world's population. Of course, right now many more boys grow up playing video games and become much more skilled at them. Should that never change? There is no reason that girls and women...(and yes, females past a certain age are "Women" just as most pro-players are "Men",) should not be encouraged and included in eSports. Almost every time a woman is mentioned, it is in a negative way. Guys even disrespect their own girlfriends or wives some of the time with tasteless pics or descriptions. Now some of that is just the nature of immature males (cannot really call them men), but it can become a real turnoff. I try not to pay attention to all of that but sometimes it is impossible. This is just one of the aspects of the eSports culture that turns women off. I love StarCraft. I am not able to play the game but I watch matches, streaming, and tournaments every day. I am a valuable fan. I traveled across the country to attend MLG Providence with my son who is the StarCraft player in the family. I started learning the game after seeing how much he enjoyed it. He now lives far from me after graduating from college and we really enjoy discussing what is going on in StarCraft several times a week. What a great thing! But I have to avoid most of the chats because of the moronic comments and poor behavior displayed, especially when the misogynistic comments begin. If you do not know what that means, look it up. I want to hear about what people think about strategies, players, ways to improve the games, etc. But that is not what is in the chats. So I rely on the Casters who are essential to someone like me to learn the game. Day(9) has taught me a great deal with his ability to analyze, along with Tasteless and Artosis. Other Casters and sites like teamliquid have also really brought the game to life for me. I have often seen comments that non-players can never understand the game, that they don't even exist. Well they do. I love the strategy, learning about the strengths & weaknesses of the 3 races, etc. So please let others into the eSports world, others perhaps different than yourselves. We are so lucky to be exposed to players from so many different countries. We are so much more connected in the world because of the Internet and eSports is a great way to build relationships, encourage travel and understanding between countries, etc. I know that seems lofty for a game, but that is why I love StarCraft.  | ||

"Subvert a portion of your identity?" Come on. I'm not suggesting you dress up like a man, or that you should be avoiding contact. I'm saying that if it is so important to you to be picked up because if your actual talent, then don't make posts on TL drawing attention to the fact that you're a girl. Most gamer girls do exactly that. What I'm suggesting not only can be done, it has been done. There is a current female NA Grandmaster that will surprise a lot of people, when they find out the player is a girl. I'm pretty sure the number of people who know her true gender is less than ten. She has the same concern as the OP. She practices regularly with other Grandmasters (most of who do not know she is female), and discusses theory/etc on skype with far fewer. The people she does discuss this with have enough respect and responsibility to keep it quiet per her wishes. She plays a lot in online tournaments, and even showed up and dominated a local LAN event earlier this year without a lot of attention. No beards. Not even a smurf account. No one even posted the fact that a girl won it in the TL thread, it was just "Congrats to XXX!" The issue at hand isn't the female favoritism per se (which isn't going to change no matter who wants it to), but that the OP wants to avoid it. If she needs to take some very small steps to reach that goal, the prerogative is on her to make an effort, not the rest of the world to bend to her desires. If the goal is not to join a pro gaming team based on merit alone, but to change the thought processes of half the population, well, good luck with that. | ||

The most important thing is: don't try to change what you can't. Especially when you can avoid your personnal current issue by *not* posting about it. It's slightly off topic, but still: this reminds me of the "issue" of being white in Taiwan. One of the result is that everyone is 300% nice with you, help you as much as they can, etc. And this "because you're white". But still, I won't complain about it, and say "omg so sad, they're nice because I'm white !  ".Ok, I get a free cookie because I'm a foreigner, not because I truly deserve it. If I really want to prove I'm worth XYZ, there are probably tons of other ways (in this case, actually learn Mandarin, and earn big respect from it). In your case, actually win tournaments once you join the team. Or whatever you want to be good at. Sometimes, you get what you want, but not for the reasons you want... that's still better than not getting what you want at all? | ||

If any events continue to pop up like that you might as well exploit it, what's the disadvantage for you other than being seen as a 'mascot' (which you wouldn't be criticized for if you were actually decent and beat the other crappy female pro's, who would get that negative image). I think Jongmi is playing now though and will be better than you and all the other females so it's probably too late. | ||

edit: Ok I read the comment above me and felt immature so I went back to read the op :p Like it or not, being a girl means you differ from 99.99% of other players. So bias is to be expected and that only means you have to try even harder to prove yourself. You can find quite a bunch of movies playing around the same general scenario, it's really nothing to surprise you. If you still want it I say go for it  | ||

Part of me thinks we should just suck it and see, the minority was always get defined by these sort of characteristics, First female pro, first UK pro etc, first paraplegic pro, hopefully we can just move past it, and anyone that kicks up a fuss about a players gender should be laughed out. | ||
