It is now the 28th of November, 2011.
Normally my days look like the following: Get up, go to school, get back home, video game (or E-Sports) related stuff. And I've been fine with that for the last 8 years. But today on the bus ride towards school, I had a clear moment. I realized that in those 8 years, I've been answering everything with the stuff that people want to hear.
"Do you enjoy your current education?" - "Yes, I really enjoy it."
"What do you wish to achieve?" - "I would like to become an Architect."
I was preparing my life to be a "9 to 5"-drag, on which I would hate myself for it for the rest of my working carreer and would regret it for the rest of my life.
At first on High school, I told people I wanted to be a DJ. I realized that that might not be the right decision for me. So I switched to becoming an architect, I made it to part 1 out of 3 of the total education process. (1: First 4 years of College, 2: Second 4 years of College, 3: 4 years or so, of University).
So I made that, stood there, posing to the camera's with my diploma in my hand, realizing... I don't want to be an Architect. Now I'm doing a Interactive Media education, which will probably take 4 years to complete. And here as well, I'm responding to questions with answering they want to hear.
"Do you enjoy your current education?" - "Yes, I really enjoy it."
"What do you wish to achieve?" - "I would like to do something with commercials."
But the matter of fact is, I don't really give a sh*t about commercials, building websites, or drawing buildings, or whatever the f*ck. And that is what I realized this morning, in the bus ride towards this school.
So... here I am, hours away of failing a test I don't give a sh*t about...
You know what I want to do? All I want to do is, help E-Sports grow over the entire Western Civilization.
You'll probably see me soon, 'cause I'll get there.
EDIT: Okay, to clear up some things: I do already have a degree, I just started my current education. I'd like to contribute in E-Sports by being some sort of news writer.

Oh, for the ambitions of youth...
|
So eSports made you a drop out?
|
I know where you're coming from, but accepting failure now might leave you with regret later on, there was a point in my current degree that I was borderline dropping out. I lost all motivation to do what I was doing and I failed 2 subjects in one semester just because I didn't study for one of the finals and didn't bother turning up for the other. I regret those decisions now because after thinking it through I was already halfway in to the degree. But here I am now with graduation in three weeks and looking to see what will come in the next year. If you are just starting out your tertiary education to just pursue E-Sports, it might be a good idea to do it as a side project or something and see if you can sustain it somehow. (no idea what you plan to do, cast, player, etc). E-Sports is growing but it's not such an easy scene to bust into that you can warrant just dropping everything in your life to get into, don't get me wrong I wish it were that easy, but to believe that would be naive.
btw You don't live at with your parents or anything right?

I'm 21, so youth is over
And I'm going to drop out, because I'm going to do what I really like to do.

So how do you plan to help espors grow? Do you have founds to support teams? Or do you commentate? Do you play at high level? How do you plan to make money out of all this? Because I feel like, nowadays too many people are trying to milk this esports cow.

You could make this into a poem.

the bolded part is really funny, because before i fully read your post i went to the bathroom and thought about how people who think they can be a starcraft commentator "because I like starcraft!" are just like the people who think they can be a DJ because "I like music!"

But why not get a degree? Something to fall back on. You're allowed to go for your dreams, but shouldn't you be somewhat realistic?
|
Don't. Do. It. Throwing away education for a fragile matter? Btw, you can help espirts without concentrating on it 100%.
|
|
hmm, as far as i'm concerned after reading this post, the only thing E-sport changed about your life is it screwed it up. Think twice about that decision of yours and don't make another post with a photo of you and a computer with you asking yourself those same questions.
|
I'm confused. Esports is a very broad term. What exactly do you plan to do within esports?
|
Dont listen to conforming ignorance, do what the fuck you want. As long as you know what you want, arent retarded, and dont have deluded perceptions as to what success and failure are, youll be fine
|
Most people who got into esports had jobs or a practical future before they went completely into the scene....I don't really know of anyone (besides the actual progamers themselves) who just quit everything they were working for, got into the scene, and succeeded. You don't seem very practical about this situation...but glhf?

|
You can't just say you want to help Esports...you need some focus. That's like saying you want to contribute to science - very broad! Maybe if you can find a niche that is interesting and can really get people to notice your work you might have a chance.
Make sure you don't throw away your chance for an education for esports, it's nice to have something to fall back on should you need it!

Welp, at least the netherlands is a pretty cool place to be homeless I guess??
Why is it that you can't get your degree whilst pursuing whatever half assed plan you have??

I think I'm gonna move to the USA then, you can buy castles for the price of a normal house in NL.
But in all seriousness, does everyone has their TL;DR-mode on?

You didn't have your edit there, and you said you were going to drop out.
And now that you've edited in that you want to be a news writer, we can all safely assume that you haven't thought this plan out at all in the slightest

And now that you've edited in that you want to be a news writer, we can all safely assume that you haven't thought this plan out at all in the slightest Correct, because this mindset has started from today, so there's still a lot of planning before the drop-out occurs.
And next to that, I'm not completely nutters that I'll 100% jump into E-Sports without a backup. First a job has to be found to give me solidarity (which shouldn't be a problem, since I already have a solid degree), then most likely volunteers work for, for example a professional gaming team or a general E-Sports news website, then as that progresses, I can take on more and more work untill it eventually becomes a full-time job.

Try writing some constructive articles here on TL under your blog and see where it takes you. I'd stick to my education if I were you.

The thing about being a news writer for almost every esports website is that they are voluntary, unpaid positions.

So again, you didn't think this out at all. What CA said is true and that isn't gonna change any time soon
|
Because life-plans are developed in minutes. How 'bout you give me some time to work this out?
And yes, what CA says does count for most of the sites.
|
Good luck with your life plan. I already got my degree In Materials Science, and realized I didn't like it either . It was pretty depressing, now I have to go for another degree. I read a physics textbook for fun and I really enjoy parts of it (terminal velocity in something called the millikan oil drop experiment was fascinating!), so I'm hopeful I finally found something I love (going for a physics degree now).
I guess you just have to think hard about what you've always felt drawn to or passionate about when you were young...most people seem to have a moment when they realize something is really fun and interesting, and then pursue that. The ones that get a degree for money are the ones I would feel sorry for, living a life doing what you dislike is no kind of life at all
|
Good for you, and best of luck.
You have a degree to fall back on so go for it buddy!

Then the issue rises, is who will want to pay you for being a news writer with no prior history of writing news? What is your experience in the field? I know news writers for many websites, and they don't pay very much, if anything at all. Usually they cover just a press pass for the event, not even travel / lodging.
For the majority of the sponsored teams, they pay players a few hundred a month, if that (yes there are exceptions). However, if they are paying their players only a few hundred, how much do you think they will pay their news writers?
I was once on a sponsored team for BW, I got paid a very small amount for being the team manager, player, news writer, and american PR spokesperson. (I'm talking a few hundred over the course of 3 years).
There's just very little money in news writing in this field.
I seriously would re-consider going down this path for a career. To be frank and completely honest, writing news in the esports scene is more of something you should do in your free time to build your resume. It's not something to make money out of to even support a diet of ramen noodles for a week.
I wish you luck if you want to go down this path. You'll definitely need it. If you want the advice of someone who has been there, I recommend continuing school and writing for fun.
