Well, I've decided to quit playing Brood War. I will still watch (whenever BW tournaments are getting streamed, which is very rare), but I just can't play it anymore. There are three reasons for this: 1. I've got problems with my neck/back. This is the reason I had to quit playing guitar as well. Since I got this problem I can rarely play, and it's not fun to play BW once in a while, because then your mechanics will just suck every time you play.
2. I'm studying to be an engineer, which requires me to dedicate a lot of my time to studying.
3. This is maybe the most important, and most sad, reason of all: I am no longer feeling like playing Brood War. Every day you see a new player switch to SC2 or quit entirely. I'm afraid BW will die rather quickly now, and this does not help my motivation at all.
Since I'm thinking of quitting BW, I've been thinking about everything I've experienced with it. Here's two random, and good, moments from my life playing BW:
1. This happened December 31st 1999. I was ten that year, and played protoss online. I didn't understand build orders or micro or stuff like that, I was just a kid that really loved StarCraft. I had played online since february(I think BW came out in march, so I played SC1 online before BW came out), but never won a single game. I also never played ladder, because I thought that just was a SC-version of the ladder game, haha! (you know, like this: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3519/3470833188_9d16e8083b.jpg ) So, right before midnight, I started a new game. I was protoss and he was terran. I don't remember exactly how it started out, but I remember getting goon range and being able to kill all his vultures. I was moving towards his base, confident that I would take him out (people didn't expand back then, by the way, it was almost always 1 base vs 1 base). Then my mom started shouting. It was one minute before midnight, and she wanted me to join the rest of my family to watch the fireworks, since it was the beginning of a new millennium. I shouted back that I just had to finish the game, then I would go outside, but she insisted that I paused the game. I tried to explain to her that I played another person, but she said "surely no-one is playing on new years eve!". Then the clock hit twelve, and you could hear fireworks being shot up all over town. She got angrier, since we both just missed watching some fireworks, but I just continued playing and arguing. It ended with me winning! I started the new millennium with winning my first game of StarCraft!
2. The first girl I was ever interested in was a girl playing StarCraft. I was 12, and was playing a random girl online, and I started chatting. When she told me that she's a girl, I just got crazy. A girl playing StarCraft! I got really interested, and started to ask her where she lived, what clothes she was wearing etc. Her answers were really short, because she was massing up a large army, and then before I got an answer about if she had a boyfriend, she attacked me and I died Love sucks!
This is just two of many good memories I got from playing and watching BW! I will miss those times, and that game, but I feel it is time to move on now.
So, for SC2: I was a master level zerg in season 1, but after playing a match now I'm in low platinum (haven't played since right after master league was introduced). Therefore I decided that I should play random and learn all races a little, then specialize on zerg later. If anyone wants to coach me in any of the races, please PM me!

Sorry to hear that. At least you have few, uh, fascinating memories to remember by. How long did you have to argue to win that game? :p Anyway, hope to see you sometime on Brood War LR thread when new season actually starts though!

12 years is a lot of time spent witha computer game so ya so I think its normal for ppl to move on.
However, my suggestion is not to go to SC2. It won't do your back/neck any good and certainly requires lots of time as well. (espcially when you want someone to coach you...)
But hey it's your decision so good luck.

Its a good choice to move on and I wish you good luck. I never play anymore either, haven't played for years. Drop by and watch some streamed PL though!

BW to me is like that tv show or movie you never get tired of watching. even if you've seen it a hundred times, you're more than happy to see it a hundred times more.

Wait, you're quitting BW but still going to be playing SC2? 0_o

You can play SC2 at Masters level with like 80 APM. Sure he can.

Exactly! It is indeed an odd question, but I was 12!

I was already heading for his base, so it was maybe 3-4 minutes

Yes. As I said, it's about motivation, but also the fact that I only can play once in a while(because of time and my neck problem), so even if I did have motivation, I would suck as hell. In SC2 it's much easier to be high in the ladder while only playing once in a while. That being said, I have played SC since it came out, so it's not that strange if I feel like moving on.

I'm 27 and I've been playing this game since day 1. Stop making me feel old.

You're not old, come on...:p

Good luck on becoming an engineer!
And although you're quitting playing, at least you'll still be showing your support by watching tournaments. That's good enough for me.
