Hey guys, I, like many of you, indulged into Blizzard's videogames and have played all of them religiously. However, outside of SC:BW and SC2, I have become fairly bored of the other games. Diablo 3 is months away and I am creating this blog post in order to acquire assistance in order to find PC games to kill time with.
Genre does not matter. If the game is good/fun I am willing to try it out. I prefer multiplayer/competitive games; however, single players are fine to.
No Valve games (TF2....CS...Half-Life..etc) because I have played them all.
I really want to play a Hack n Slash in preparation for Diablo 3.
You could break out Dragon Age for a more Hack n Slash game. For multi-player, you have to try Magicka. Find a few mates, get it for like 10 dollars, and have fun, because that game is hilarious
You could try "Path of Exile". It's a free to play game. It is explicitly modeled after Diablo, especially the gothic atmosphere of the first Diablo. Although I'm not sure if the game is out yet. I think it's still in beta. Maybe you're lucky and the beta is open :D Another choice would be Darkspore. It's based on the Spore character engine, has like 100 different heroes and other nice new features in a sci-fi setting. Not my cup of tea, but alright. Also you could take a look at Deathspank. It's a very humorous hack and slash type of game. If you're into that type of humor this seems like a really fun game. (Haven't tried it out myself)
The Witcher 1 and 2 is a must play imo. Story so good <3 not a true hack n slash though.
Torchlight is pretty good if you just want a diablo clone but d2 is still better. I never got into titan quest and its expansion, for some reason it just felt so repetitive and the character customisation (the only good thing about it) wasn't enough to pull me through. I think i finished it but i definitely won't be going back.
The HOMM games already mentioned are excellent for that, as are games like Civ IV. If you want to immerse yourself in the pinnacle of RPG gaming, the Baldur's Gate games are second to none. If you have a creative (or sadistic) streak, Dwarf Fortress is as addicting as can be. I've wasted many an hour at my university playing Nethack instead of studying for exams, you can too! Fillers while waiting for Diablo 3 could be Titan Quest, Dungeon Siege 2 and Torchlight. Autumn and darkness approach, perhaps a scare is in order? Amnesia - The Dark Descent and Call of Cthuli: Dark Corners of the Earth deliver.
Hellgate:London was probably the worst action rpg game I have ever played. Not sure how the reboot is like.
How is Titan Quest's multiplayer? Is the community active? Do people still play that game? Seems pretty interesting. Sadly, the demo does not work for me on steam!
I really want to try out POE. If somebody would like to help a fella brethren out "hint" (give me a beta key), would be much obliged!!!
I have heard good things about the Witcher. Its still going for $50 (Witcher 2). Will have to read reviews on that game before I try it out. is there a demo out for it?

How is the gameplay in Baldur's gate? Is it full-blown rpg game? Or, is it more action-oriented. Also, the game seems pretty old....now I am not the kind of guy to judge on graphics, but....gameplay must be really exhilirating if I would consider that one. More info plz!!!
Dwarf Fortress? I never heard of that game. Will have to google it good sir.
I think the TQ multiplayer is fine. You can buy it from steam for like 15$ with the addon... For best experience just play with a friend. You can have 4 players in 1 game I think and there's a german community, don't know much about how actice the international community is, but its a fun game even without community.

It's a classical RPG in all it's glory, following the AD&D ruleset. As such, it is not comparable to games like Diablo and should not be approached as such. While the game flows in real time, there are typically so many decisions to make during combat that the pause key is your best friend, especially considering you'll be controlling a party of up to 6 characters. A typical scenario would be that you pause the game to tell your mage to cast a flame arrow to finish off that sword spider whilst your fighter retreats a few steps to accept a cure spell from your cleric. Your other fighter might then have to go after the baddie approaching your frail mage, while your druid/fighter dual class character removes the poison that is rapidly draining said fighter's hp.
Things get really interesting once enemy mages are thrown into the mix. The exhiliration comes from getting out of a particularly dicey battle with only a few hitpoints remaining as a result of good planning, decision making and use of magical items.
The best aspects of the Baldur's Gate games are the characters and their interactions, the soundtrack and the story. The game is quite open-ended and lets you wander to different areas at your whim, but the story rarely lets you go for very long (although to be fair this is not always the case with the first game) without some reminder of what is going on in the big picture. It's almost a play-to-understand experience, really.
There's a thread here on TL about the games, I recommend checking in there for more info.
Torchlight was quite good but honestly - just get your hands on a copy of D2 + LoD and play that for a while - if you need some inspiration then take a look at all those funky "My D2 Journey with Pictures"-Threads that you can find in the TL-Blog-Section
Well, to be honest, there really is nothing as Diablo as Diablo itself.
A lot of people are mentioning true RPGs, which isn't the same thing at all. Of the ones mentioned, I'd say Torchlight and TQ are most comparable hack'n'slash games to it.
I mist have posted this list a dozen times on different forums:
Anachronox Arcanum Beyond Good and Evil Planescape: Torment Warhammer: Dark omen
There you go, probably close to 200 hours of pure joy. A heavy bias towards rpgs, but I'm either a competitive game, or rpg kinda guy. Dark omen is a minor exception, but one of my favourite games of all time, and something every person on this planet should have played imo.
if the witcher looks just a little bit like a game u would play GO FOR IT. its like the best singleplayer. story, gameplay, fights + it looks amazing and ofc it takes u some time to finish what is really rare. I liked witcher more than ME and Oblivion.

Also mass effect in PC anyone?
Oh yes, forgot about Mass Effect, even though I am doing another playthrough of it right now! One of my favourites
Torchlight was a good game but the no-multiplayer part was lame, still worth the price if you want a fun hack n' slash to spend time though. Luckily Torchlight 2 will be coming out soon and it'll have multiplayer. I'll most likely pick it up myself when it's out
I got holidays right now and I started playing the first s.t.a.l.k.e.r. game with oblivion lost mod. If you play it in a dark room with a headset it is quite atmospheric and on hardest difficulty it is quite realistic too, you as well as enemies die to 1 head shot or 3 body shots or something. Definitely had some hardcore shock moments when I was sneaking through some lab just with flashlight expecting some mutants when suddenly some military guy came out of cover behind a box and immediately opens fire and kills me in like half a second. It can sometimes be kinda frustrating when you come around a corner and an opponent gets a lucky headshot from 100 meters distance and you drop dead without even seeing him, so I started quicksaving every minute or so. Definitely one of the hardest single player games I ever played. I am close to the end now and I think i hid the quickload button well over 300 times
Witcher 1,2 is a must, but the graphic requirements are astounding... great story, great replay value, great gameplay, best graphics, and many options. atmosphere is great too. you can hack and slash if you go swordmaster path.
I should try torchlight, ive heard many things, so it must be good. Try playing Oblivion on PC too, its way better than console cuz of endless amount of mods.
try mass effect, oblivion, and borderlands for starters. other fun options if you like strategy are homeworld, sins of a solar empire, CIV, and total war.
If you're ok to play an older game, check out Severance: Blade of Darkness by Codemasters. It's awesome if you're into going into a bloody frenzy and slaying things with anything you can get your hands on. I bludgeoned a guy to death with a foot stool once It's pretty enjoyable!
