Okay, so I've been lax about this for a few days. A couple of reasons.

First. I GOT MY STEELSERIES EQUIPMENT! Yeah!!! Big thanks to steelseries for sponsoring me and my map team. The new stuff is SICKKKK.

Unfortunately, as it is with every time you get new equipment, it takes a while to get used to. Right now, it works great and I'm fine with it but for the first few days, it was hard to control. Like really hard. I'd try to split and I'd fail miserably. Normally, I don't have these problems myself. Maybe it's because I've only been using crappy mosues and keyboards lol (yes, the plural of that is correct, I checked). Right now though, IT FEELS SO SMOOTH AND NICE. The keyboard wasn't as big of a problem but my last keyboard was one where the buttons were thin and didn't stick out of the board that much. Again, it's tough getting used to it but I've gotten a feel for it I think. The headset is just plain awesome. Seriously.

Anyway, with all this equipment-changing, I haven't been able to get any real ladder games done. I tried a few, lost miserably in all of them and decided to stop until I got used to the stuff.

Second reason I've been skipping out on this a bit, school's starting. Me and my friends are having all the end-of summer fun stuff and it's cut out of my Starcraft time quite a bit.

Third reason, I got addicted to roller coaster tycoon 2 again. Playing a more casual game like that's helped me improve my mouse accuracy while having fun I think.

Oh, and I used Osu as a measurement tool for my mouse accuracy .

Okay, I freaking HAAAAAAAATE ZvT right now. I HAAAAAAAAATE it. I've pretty muched stopped going hatch first because of all the bunker rushes. I'll probably just wait for the patch for the barracks. I know it doesn't change THAT much but it'll help a little.

Also THE ****ING LADDER MAPS ARE STUPID. STUPID. They were nowhere near this bad at release. You cannot take a game off of a meching Terran on Antiga because they just turtle up and take their third and fourth bases secured with tanks and you can't do anything about it. If this were BW, I'd expand ten mroe times but in SC2, you can only get like 4 expos mining minerals at decent saturation AT MOST and still have a substantial army. You can't do anything except MAYBE drop, but if he gets a couple of turrets, he probably would just clean it up with a few tanks on the highground and support from the lowground. Here's a replay of a game I just played. Yes, I could've done things better but his play was absolutely average imo. Nothing out of the ordinary and he still crushed me completely.

Other maps aren't much better. I feel VERY uncomfortable on Typhon peaks, just beacuse of the wacky layout. The rocks are a threat, reapers are actually pretty good on it and the backdoor feels unsafe. I've vetoed all the terribad maps but even after that I still seem to be getting a lot of close positions on shattered.

Yeah, I wish there were better maps in.

Things have been going well. Just 14 gas 14 pool and either do a defensive roach play or fast banes. Both seem to work but I haven't had a chance to use the 10 pool that often. Yeah, because of a lack of games, I haven't really played that much ZvZ. No problems.

Okay, so I'm having a tough time deciding my build on Shakuras. After reading up on the recent drone drill discovery, I tried to go for hatch first. Unfortunately, having never actually tried such a build before, I found that the hatch would 100% get blocked by the scout probe. So I screwed up a few times like that. I think I should be going 15 pool 16 hatch but I don't want to stop using my 11 pool. I think 15 pool will get me a better economy since I get the third base faster but I'm still not sure if it's worth giving up my standard play. In hindsight I guess it is the best decision.

I'm also having trouble against something like a 7 gate. Before, I figured that with burrowed banes, I'd be completely safe against a build like that but it turns out that adding a robo and waiting a few production cycles completely nullifies the banes (who would've thunk it?). A ling army generally doesn't do well against forcefields.

I contemplated roach play, just to be safe. The other option I had is use Ling/Bane as a counterattack tool instead of a defensive one. Of course, it's a lot harder on Shakuras since one forcefield can lock you out of the base, and there's pretty much only one path between the sides of the map, so a pushing Protoss army can funnel your units pretty well. I think the roach solution would be best, transitioning into mutas if I scout that there's no massive gateway push coming.


As a result of the few games with me getting used to my mouse, I dropped quite a bit on ladder.

I just saw the name and wanted to stop by and say that I think I recognized you from... iCCup maps? I'm not sure. I remember those maps being good though-- I particularly liked some of the fun ones, like Princess Fortress and Sungtzu Crossing, but I've played a bit on all of them. I actually don't know if you made those ones but yeah.

I did play on starlight breaker! I remember that one and valhalla both have a single vespene geyser at an easily-accessible third (though valhalla used to only have 0 vespenes at the third). That's a good one I haven't played on the others, though. Good luck with your new equipment! Maybe we'll see each other on the ladder sometime.

ZvP: There are a couple ways to handle the scout probe trying to deny your hatch. First way is send your drone a bit early and hide him behind the minerals. When you are ready to build the hatch, protoss would have to be waiting there already.
That said, some protoss players will check for a pool and, if they don't see one, just send their probe out and patrol. In that case, you can either send out 2 drones to chase it away (he'll be forced to move his probe around manually; try to get the hatch down if he moves too far away), or just drop a pool as soon as the probe leaves your main to go back to your nat.

ZvT: You should stick it out with hatch first IMO, and figure out how to deal with bunker rushes another way. Are they dedicated bunker rushes or what? How are you currently reacting to a bunker rush? What's your early scouting patterns in ZvT?

I actually tend not to drone scout, a habit from when I always went 15 gas /15 pool. Once I think about it, that's actually probably the root of my problems, I don't know how committed he is to the attack. I was pissed off because I always either overmade or undermade zerglings to defend. Should I be planting down a spine at my front or is the money better spent on zerglings?

Personally I always scout with my 13th drone and 16hatch.

If I see 2rax I 17pool, send a drone out around my nat to check for sneaky bunkers as soon as I hit 18/18 supply, and build a spine with it as soon as the hatch and pool complete (which is approx. the same time with 16/17). This will keep you relatively safe, unless he commits by bringing SCVs. The key here is to, when you send that scout drone home from his base, keep him at a watchtower (or if the map has no towers, keep him a bit outside the Terran nat/ramp) to see when and with what he's moving out. This way you can make lings if needed, or drone up with just 1 pair of lings for scouting if he doesn't move out right away. Either way, keep a close eye on scouting because there are infinity followups to this ranging from CC to rine/rauder/stim timing to tank/marine/siege push.

If your drone sees a rax and gas already mining, he's probably going hellions. In that case I pool on 18, still spine @nat when pool/hatch are done, but get extractor when pool finishes, roach warren a few seconds after I start mining gas, lair @100gas, then pump some roaches and keep them in my main in anticipation of an elevator drop or BFH drop. Meanwhile, I'm droning, getting a 3rd queen, 2 more spines, and an evo to block off against hellions if needed. Also, keep your roaches near enough to block the ramp in case he just makes a crapload of hellions and tries to drive by your spines. This way, you've got spines and roach tech in case of some 1 base all-in (since scouting can be hard once hellions are out), lair and 3 queens and maybe evo in case of banshees, and roaches ready in main against BFH drop. From there, you gotta scout, although getting a spire is a relatively good option regardless of what he's doing.

I'm always trying to refine my builds, but this is what I'm doing currently, and the 13 drone scout is pretty important IMO.
