It might be general forum news-worthy, but the story just broke online and there won't be a substantial amount to say until tomorrows paper but this is going to be the talk for the next month in my podunk little state capitol.

One of the dozen English teachers and head of the yearbook organization has over several years siphoned one hundred and freaking fifty thousand dollars.

My initial reaction was: Wait wth the yearbook had MUCH? Then I remembered it was over a period of 4+ years. Back to my original reaction- wth!

The unofficial word is that the book keeper was in on it. I don't really have many details other than this. But DAMN. One of the people that taught half my friends- a teacher I dropped; scammed 150k. Wild.
An English teacher at Chiles High School has been charged with stealing at least $150,000 from the school’s yearbook account, said John Hunkiar, Leon County School District chief of safety, security and emergency management.

Tammy Bennett was arrested Friday on charges of grand theft and and organizing a scheme to defraud, Hunkiar said.

Source

I'll update it later if I have a chance to breathe and new information comes up and definitely tomorrow after the press release.

Is it bad that I'm more shocked the yearbook made atleast 150k than the fact that it was stolen? The news to me is that they have 150k.

Even if it was over 4 years, 150k is still a lot. That's pretty impressive though, I'm surprised he wasn't caught earlier.

ah its too bad that today 150k will get you like 4 5cent candies, now back in the 80's that would be a lot of money.

*She was a bitch. That's why I dropped her class for a different teacher immediately. Just to give you a reference- a full page yearbook ad or cheerful runs about $600 for color.
On a high school English teacher salary? She probably took as much as she was payed.

Absolutely nothing. Glossy pages. The advertisements were 600 for a full page, the yearbooks were only like 150ish I believe. I can't really recall tbh High School was 7 years ago.

My yearbook was $400 per page ($100 for the year book itself) if you wanted your own special page. Some people did an entire 2 pages of self gloating.

With 2700 students, they probably made well over 200k in one year. so 150k is not surprising.

lol great common sense response to a ridiculous post

Fixed it for ya.

@OP I would've stolen some of the money after 2 years and then the 3rd I would resign saying I got a better offer elsewhere and then run for the hills lol.

heh, something similar happened at my school not too long ago. someone in the finance office stole $297k to cover gambling debts or something and got 15 years in the slammer. let me see if i can dig up a link.

edit: found it

Litwin told law enforcement in an interview that the money was used to support a gambling habit that included trips to Las Vegas and Atlantic City, N.J., according to court records. She also said the theft was a result of extensive credit card debt and large mortgage payments on her home.

i guess if you're handling such big money on a rather small salary the temptation is huge

Wow v.v reminds me of the priest that stole a pretty 1 million from the local catholic church's school programs to fund his secret homosexual (adult) boyfriend

http://www.stamfordadvocate.com/news/article/Father-Fay-dies-in-prison-Saturday-5029.php

Anyways, pretty disappointing that this would happen especially since most schools are barely able to remain in budget nowadays.

Not to be callous over the funding that was lost that could have gone towards more classes but Lawton Chiles High School has never hurt for money.

I'm just surprised that they had 150k in the first place.

And that's exactly how she got caught. The audit showed that a lot of reimbursement requests were false and from there it turned into an avalanche.

So yeah, it is a public school.
