I don't really play fighting games too much. I watch more than I play and I don't really feel a connection to them...
However, there is one game that just does it for me. It's like a match made in heaven. That game is Street Fighter 3: Third Strike. I play Ryu, Gouki, Hugo, Q and a little Dudley.
The purpose of this thread is two-fold: 1. I have one friend who plays with me on GGPO or Supercade (Trozz). If you play 3s, high skill or garbage, I would love to play with you. Please PM me anytime to play. 2. I want to introduce some people to this game.
Video 1 - Jiro (Purple Gouki) vs Pierre (Grey Urien)
Why is this dope? Other than the dope Raging Demon to escape the unblockable Aegis Reflector setup at 00:35, the sickest part of this video is at 1:40. Raging Demon is a super that cannot connect if your opponent is in block stun (the short period after he blocks an attack) or hit stun (the short period after you hit them). This means Jiro started the overhead attack, saw it was getting parried, and then managed to press lp lp → hp lk before the attack finished. + Show Spoiler [Followup Videos] +
Video 2 - Hayao (Blue Hugo) vs Umezono (Grey Chun Li)
Why is this dope? 01:30. In Street Fighter games, if you block a special attack, you take 'chip damage', which is one pixel of life lost. In Third Strike, if you move from a neutral position, towards the attack, you will 'parry' the attack, taking no damage and taking less time to recover from the attack (less block stun!). In order to parry Chun Li's super, Hugo needed to input ← o ← o ← o ← o ← o ← o ← o ← o nearly perfectly. Then, in the short pause between attacks, he did a 720 to counter with his own super. + Show Spoiler [Followup Videos] +

Video 3 - Amir (White Ryu) vs Sextaro (White Makoto)
Why is this dope? Because besides being a good match, this is the Denjin-Videos crew. I've watched their shit so much that I feel like I've been to Denjin Arcade and Family Fun. My opinion is that Seth Killian is the best video game commentator; however Rockefeller (this commentator) is my favourite commentator of all time to listen to. + Show Spoiler [Followup Videos] +

Hope you learned to enjoy Third Strike! If you have any videos or experiences with Third Strike, please post them here, and again, I'd love to play any time
This looks like a ton of fun. Is it essentially like a tag team, somewhat different version of Street Fighter 3? I'm not well versed in Fighting Games but the vids are cool.
I only recently got into fighting games after my friend introduced me to street fighter a few weeks before AE release but i have found myself getting more and more involved in the genre generally checking out all the different fighting games but i haven't really seen much of this even though its a street fighter title. Watching the videos now always cool to see some sick executions when you realize they are extremely hard to pull off.

It's basically like Street Fighter 3: Legacy of the Void. Street Fighter 3 was broken, so they made Street Fighter 3: Second Impact which was less broken, and finally Street Fighter 3: Third Strike which is still broken but not too badly.
It's not a tag game, just 1v1. There are 19 characters and they each have 3 supers they can pick from.
i played SF4 quite a bit when it came out but basically have no knowledge at all of any other SF game. Is The first video a japanese version or something? Im pretty noob so I'm sure this is a dumb question but is Gouki = Akuma? O_o

Gouki is the Japanese name, Akuma is the western name. All of the videos in set 1 and 2 are Japanese. Japanese in fighting games = Koreans in Starcraft... basically the best of the best.
I bought AE last week. I never really got into fighting games until like 2 month ago, because I only really played with my brothers / friends, we were all mashers and apparently I was the better masher so they'd always rage when they lost.
I love it, bought MVC3 a month and a half ago because my friend is like "pick it up we can play it online", so I was like... Okay. I got raped, but I'm not a quitter and there happened to be a lot of tournaments being stream in preparation for EVO11, so I watched those, learned a bunch of stuff and got a lot better. I'm loving AE right now, though I suck (Big difference from MVC3...) Also bought a stick, getting used to it, but I think it's more enjoyable, kind of feels more "authentic". (My skill level did drop significantly, but I've been able to do some moves I wasn't able to do before, Fei Long's "chicken wing" as people call it is what used to give me trouble but I can do it pretty regularly now.)
My stick happens to be PC compatible so I downloaded GGPO (Kind of funny that I downloaded it and then checked TL and saw this thread) to play with my friend that got me into MVC3, going to play SF3S, I'd be glad to play with you later Chill if you want. ^^;

My GGPO is always ready to go anytime. I'm just playing the computer right now actually haha. PM me whenever or ping me on IRC.
And yes, I will be buying Online Edition immediately! Super excited!
Ahh, fighting games, my biggest passion before SC2 (weird, considering I was fairly unfamiliar with RTS before SC2, outside of playing AoE when i was like 6 >,<, I was instantly swallowed by SC2). I basically only have fighting games for my 'ol PS2 and my 360. I never played 3S though, which is a shame, it looks pretty damn good, and produced what has been called the greatest moment in all of eSports Daigo, such a baller man.

My brother's raiding in WoW, so I can reset my router yet to open the ports, otherwise I probably would play you now. Also need to figure out how the online works, but I'll probably have that sorted out by the time I can play online.
PS: Well... Apparently playing online is really easy..

That is generally the case for street fighter games, although the skill gap is closing in light of daigo's recent losses in evo2k11. one from poongko in the top 8, and another from latif in the top 3. the korean player poongko is tearing shit up right now with seth in sf4AE.
Koreans are generally the best in the tekken games. knee (top bryan), nin (top steve), qudans (top devil jin) are known as the 3 tekken gods of korea
US players tend to dominate the MvC games for some reason. that shit is so crazy to watch lol.
I love sf3 3rd strike, its gameplay is very solid and it is indeed a great competitive game. I often play fighting games with a friend of mine who's got pretty much every fighting game that was ever released on any consoles, and 3rd strike is definitely in our top 5.
The only complaint I have about this game is the character roster. I mean, Q, Necro, Hugo, Urien, Twelve, Oro; these guys are ugly, uninteresting, and moreover they take a spot that could have been occupied by much better characters in my opinion. Anyway I think this street fighter got the worst character selection ever, Capcom dropped the ball there. No Honda, no sagat, no zangief, no vega, no guile... anyway you know what I'm saying
Currently waiting for my stick to arrive, then im gonna start playing some ssf4ae and possibly third strike again, cool to see that there are people interested in fighting games on TL :>.

You are saying that Urien, Necro, Hugo and Q are ugly and then you say that you miss Sagat, Gief and Honda. Real good-Iooking boys LOL.
Urien is arguably one the most interesting character in SF btw.
My friend is obsessed with the Street Fighter series, and he considers 3rd Strike to be the best made, most balanced fighter of the series. Ever since I saw Daigo parry Chun li's Ult, I have been a fan of this game myself. I only play it infrequently on an emulator, and I have a problem inputting certain moves, prolly because I don't have Nkeyrollover on my keyboard.
I'm glad this game is getting some attention on TL. It's definitely a great fighter.
who in this thread saw the evo 3sO exhibition and got baited into thinking there was a character select screen during the fight. i lit up so much until i realized it was just character movelists
still the fanservice in 3SO is ridiculous. button check hdr/mvc2/doujin style AND in the character select screen? gdlk..... and ill play some games with u after exams this week
how can you post about 3s and not mention kuroda and his Qqqqqqqqqqqqq
seriously watching him rape all the best players with Q is the most entertaining thing ever, it's just so cool to see someone so much better than everyone else
While Japan tends to be the best in fighting games I wouldn't say they're the same as Koreans in Starcraft. The reason they were the best in games like 3rd strike and SF4 vanilla and AE versions is because they have the arcade culture in Japan, upon equal release and equal time to play the game, Americans have shown to be just as good if not better than Japan (Check Super Street Fighter 4). It would be like if Korea had PC Bangs that had the starcraft 2 6 months before the US, and there was no digital release and in America the only place you could play it would be like 3 places in los angeles, one place in Houston, one in new york city, and like 3 in northern california. You would just never have the ability to play the game as much and get the experience that the Koreans in PC Bangs have.
I would love to play 3S with you guys once Online Edition comes out. I haven't played in years so I looked forward to getting rid of the rust thats built up.
About the whole Japanese vs Non-Japanese in fighting games....I don't know if you have meant these Japanese players in person and seen their play, but if you did, you would realize just how much better they are. If you want to compare it to Starcraft, its like someone playing with 80 APM vs someone playing with 300-400 APM (Not that dramatic but you get the idea). There is a finesse to their joystick movements and techniques that just put them at a level above Non-Japanese players. This allows them to execute moves that others would have difficulty trying to pull off.
Nerves do come into play (especially at Evos when the whole audience is against you [Pro-USA]). Foreigners can definitely take games off Japanese players, but overall it is very similar to Koreans vs Non-Koreans in SC. This is my perspective for 3S only. It can very well be different for SF4 (In which I think the gap is definitely smaller than it was for 3S).
Yoooooo I actually have a 3s tournament coming up next week I need to practice for and will be on GGPO a lot. Trumpet on there as well. Unless I'm playing vs hispanicjap or munchkin, I'm just playing vs random people and will gladly quit to play a TLer, get at me!
My Ken/Yun need a lot of work, even better if you can play Urien because I'm impressively terrible in that matchup.
The last time I played vs a TL person I went in thinking "hah this guy's just some starcraft player I'm gonna dominate." It was red.venom. I got destroyed by a damn Oro. Hopefully this experience isn't so painful

join the bandwagon. red.venom's oro is too ridiculous. easily the 2nd worst 3s beatdown of my life (right behid a match vs issei in person) that pyrolee training mang

I partially agree with AlBundy about the odd character choice, Q Necro Hugo Twelve Oro, definitely don't like. I think Urien is a godsend from Capcom lol, he's a pretty awesome character.
That said we have to keep in mind that 3S also introduced us some of the best characters, ibuki (although she was in pocket fighter) Makoto dudley the twins fei long etc. (some of them might have been in earlier versions, sorry if Im;' missing out).
It was a really weird character selection that 3S had but in the end I think it worked out pretty well, and led into SF4 to have some great great characters
I am down to play whenever. I'll be logging on to GGPO a lot more. If I'm no in the 3s room you can pop into the 2k2 room to see if I'm there or you can hit me up on aim. I'm "Idle" on ggpo.

Fei long is not in 3S. He was introduced in SF2: The New Challengers but you right about Makoto and Dudley, they are my favourite with Urien :D
Chill, what system are you getting this on? I will be playing a lot of this game. The only games I really play anymore are Fighting games and Starcraft.

hit me up anytime.
I'll be getting it on XBox and will have to reactivate my membership just to play it. In the meantime, I'm TLChill @ GGPO.
Wow, right as I start getting into 3s I find out some TL guys play, awesome. SSFIVAE is still probably my best game, and as a Guile player I play Remy in 3s... awesome projectiles in a game where projectiles sucks. Demonstration of what it's like to play Remy for those who don't know:
I love one of the comments there: "By the time you master Remy you'll realize you have no friends and your girl has left you for a Ken player "
Still apart from the fact that high-tier usually owns bottom-tier this game especially, 3s rocks!

there are lots of average and bad japanese players as well. it's not like BW where playing on korean hours is completely different from playing on regular hours.
if you go to a random arcade in tokyo and you try to play 3rd strike, there will probably be no one there. if someone IS playing they're probably average level or worse. you actually have to seek out the scene and find the best players and find out which arcade they go to and on what days.

I never saw a Third Strike machine the whole time I was in Japan in winter 2009. I actively looked for one.
The one time I played vanilla SF4 against a Japanese guy I got doubled perfected by Blanka.
I'm trying to find that video where US team in 08: Gootecks, J Wong and I think KOFiend get past the first round of SBO, which was the first time ever in 3S. Good ending

the one i played on was at taito hey in akihabara. there was one guy playing 3s and no one was playing with him, so i tried it out.
i was still in sf4 mode, so i kept trying to jump supers on activation. but otherwise i kept up despite being extremely rusty, and i was never that good to begin with.
I think Japanese players are definitely better than American players but it's definitely less of a difference than with Koreans vs non-Koreans in BW. I mean for a number of years IdrA was the only foreigner in a pro-house, there were certainly larger numbers of American 3s players, who also did better, in Japan.
Not to mention that with SF4 the gap has grown even shorter, look at Latif's awesome run at EVO. Another BW comparison: can you see any American player taking down the BW equivalents of Daigo? (basically like someone beating Flash).
MvC3's where I think we actually beat them out. MvC2 Japanese players hardly played so if we beat them it's not really that great of a thing but most of the top Japanese players played MvC3 at EVO and didn't do nearly as well as top Americans.
Are Japanese fighting gamers typically better than non-Japanese? Yes, but that gap's closing and isn't so huge anymore.

There aren't really any 3s cabs left in Japan, if you go back head to Game Spot Versus Arcade (6 machines), Game Bingo arcade (8 machines), Kokujin's arcade (I have no idea what it's called/where it is, but i was told he has cabs), or God's Garden (They have four iirc). The japanese 3rd strike scene died pretty much right as sf4 came out, all the big names switched over (Nuki, KO, KZ, Yamagata, Daigo, RX, Kokujin, etc) except Kuroda, and as far as I know Kuroda has quit playing altogether.
The current scene of players are pretty terrible, comparatively.

way to rehash my post bro.
More like I skimmed most of the thread up to this point, gave my 2 cents w/out realising it was the same as yours
I have been trying to get GGPO to run my ROMs, but I'm having a hard time. I've been console-less for awhile now, and picking up a fighter on the PC would be a lot of fun. If I can get it figured out here, I will have to start playing again. I think the last SF I played seriously was SSF3A, then I kinda drifted between DoA2 and Soul Caliber3/4.
This looks pretty nifty though, hope I can get my technical crud figured out.

Yea, maybe some kind soul will pm me with some easy emulator wisdom
Anyways, asides from BW 3s was my other love for games while I was in high school. If I wasn't broke I'd be getting a fight stick just to play on the playstation but I guess i'll just settle with getting thumb blisters again on the dpad D:
Too bad GGPO doesn't work at my place, I used to be decent at 3.3 before switching to Guilty Gear ^^ Being originally a VS fighting player it's nice seeing I'm not the only one.
Will you try the OE on 360 ? It'll use GGPO netcode and will probably work at my place \o/

Should be able to punish LP shoryu easily with down fierce, but I have never gotten any other punish on SA3 than c.lp - c.lp xx lp headbutt.
Going to the dark side, from Remy to Yang. Mostly because learning Remy felt like learning an entirely different game. Also turtling vs beginners generally works, but vs the people who parry everything you have to play a completely different game.
Edit: Considering there's a decent number of people who have posted here and that 3SOE is coming out soon how about a thread in Sports & Games?
that korean guy was asking people if they knew you, trozz! Although not quite so eloquently. He was going down the list saying "<namehere> trozz know?"

Is GGPO3sstill up and running? I thought the creator dude was helping use GGPO for the console release and removing it from the free ggpo PC when it comes out? Pretty sure I listened to a podcast all about that guy.
edit- sorry i thought the console was out already. When is it due? I thought it was July? Or did he have a change of heart? I havent had internet so I dunno whats going on anymore.
ps- I'm chilling in the chat right now, SpoR - I main Akuma but I also fuck around with Sean, Hugo, & Ibuki.
I managed to do a 360 from standing position a few times after first trying to use it alot. I heard that was hard? Or were people referring to standing 720s?

Maybe so, but for now it's still goin.
man, playing some of the low tier people on ggpo is making me question reality. getting stomped on by necro & hugo ._.

ROM difficulties=bane of my existence. Point is there's a number of roms out there and many of them aren't the correct ones.
Yea, maybe some kind soul will pm me with some easy emulator wisdom
if you dig through the first SF4 thread like 5 years ago I and others posted detailed ways to get the cps3 emulator and ggpo running

join the bandwagon. red.venom's oro is too ridiculous. easily the 2nd worst 3s beatdown of my life (right behid a match vs issei in person) that pyrolee training mang
I've played him 100s of matches and I think i've only ever taken a round or two off of him lol.
Oro is probably the 2nd most interesting/entertaining character to watch behind urien.

There are 19 characters and they each have 3 supers they can pick from.
but oro and akuma have supers that they can always do. Raging demon, god's fist, and i dunno what Oro's orange ball is called.
I've been playing a good bit trying to get better at inputs and such, but I feel like it takes so long just to be able to do any combo consistently.
For instance, the first combo I've been trying to learn for Akuma is crouching m kick, light hurricane kick, hard shoryu. I also try h punch, light hurricane, hard shoryu. I just can't seem to get the timings right on when to execute each move, and I'm also sort of confused as to when you can start doing the necessary steps for each move.
Do I hard punch and immediately after I do that, do the down->down back->back for hurricane kick, but wait until the exact moment it hits or blocks and THEN do the light kick input? Or does it all have to flow together and not "pause" on any frames? The same can be asked for the transition from light hurricane to hard shoryu. Forward->down->down forward and then hit h punch exactly when it hits or blocks?
If the way I'm asking the question is confusing I'm basically asking if you can divide the directional inputs with the actual punch or kick when in the middle of the combo, or do you just have to time it all to be together?

When you're canceling normals into specials such as in the case of cr. mk or hp -> tatsu you just do it as soon as possible because you're actually canceling the recovery animation into the special move. If you wait till when you actually see it hit its probably too late.
When you're comboing the tatsu into the shoryu, this is an air juggle, you're not canceling anything, so you press the punch button right as you're able to perform the shoryuken (do the shoryu motion, then hit fp when you hit the ground from your tatsu).
With any sort of combo practicing I recommend breaking them into parts, practicing them seperately, then eventually combing them. So in the case of cr.mk -> lk tatsu - > fp Shoryu, practice cr.mk > lk tatsu, practice lk tatsu > fp Shoryu, and then eventually practice the full combo once you have them both down.
Four things I am focusing on: 1. I'm only playing Ryu until I'm not terrible. It's less fun but I was dividing my time between other characters too much. 2. I need to be more aggressive. 3. I still can't do a full Denjin combo with 50% efficiency. 4. I don't often cancel my low forwards into anything.
I played skillessnewbie the other day, he was pretty decent. and yea chill hit confirms and canceling isn't as instinctive online for obvious reasons. I think every needs to work on 4.
I think ryu has the shortest most damaging combos, but they are pretty strict juggle timings and zoning ranges.
That Rockefeller guy seems like the destiny of street fighter to me. I don't care for fighting games but his passion got me into it. DOUBLE CHILLI FRIES!!!
I have AE too! Do you want to play on steam? I'll use everyone.
Haha I'd like to level up my game before I start playing people from TL and getting embarassed. Some day though for sure :D I play Yun and Gief. And once again, awesome sprites haha
Can you do a part 2 to this thread Chill? I like the interesting vid with brief description of why you like it and breakdown to newbies on why it's so good.
ahh so excited for the PSN release ! preordered it and hyped! too bad i have school the following week. ahh well, a whole week to get bodied while playing akuma

Absolutely. PS if anyone wants to play now go on GGPO!!
Thanks! Yun was my main when I played back in the day. It was a bit hard to do some stuff due to the random lag spikes. You seem to have a pretty solid grasp of all the characters.
I just installed supercade a few weeks ago, and only recently I finally hooked up a ps3 controller to my PC and got it working. I've been playing 3rd Strike by myself against the computer, but I've been finding it difficult to improve without some sort of information hub or 'training mode' where I can flesh out the basics. I also don't have much fighting game experience. Any tips on what I can do to get better?
also I was wondering which online emulator was better/more popular for 3rd strike, supercade or ggpo?

as a whole GGPO is much better than SuperArcade imo. I personally find Super Arcade to be rather unplayable way to much lag even with close pings just better netcode I guess. as for an information hub here you go!~ 3s INFO!~ and for training you can always try to setup MAME and turn on cheats and just start up 2 players and practice your combos atleast thats what I do.
(If you have trouble setting up MAME I can Mediafire my MAME for you :3)
Aye figure i would post here. I play every now and then, if i had to give myself an ICCUP ranking, it would be D+ at this game. I know some combos and everyone's moves, but in general pretty bad at any high level tactics, But I'm always up for a game.
Pm on Teamliquid would be best way to get a game, as currently I'm siting at home all the time.
I don't normally log into GGPO unless if i got a reason to play, but my name on there is
How people can play a 6 button fighting game on a normal PS3/360 pad is beyond me :/ Maybe King of Fighters or Mortal Kombat but not the SF series o.o;; GO GET A FIGHTSTICK!~ (you wont regret it if you play lotsa fighting games.)

yea lol, i used to use the dpad to control but I still used the 123 456 of my keyboard numpad to do attacks. especially since I main akuma, good luck trying to Raging demon on a pad lol.

The matchmaking is pretty simple to get to if that's what you're asking, but it can take a few tries to successfully join a lobby. Lots of "lobby no longer exists" and stuff like that.
Just picked up the game today for XBL, if anyone wants to play please send me a pm! I was a decent Super Turbo player, but I've never played any installment of 3S before. I'd love for someone to show me the ropes!
