Lol owned. Nice job. Definitely an odd scam, never heard of somebody calling up in regards to computer information. I guess their theory is that most people just assume everything coming from the internet is bound to be a scam so hearing a voice on the phone has some more credibility. Only an idiot though would fall for that one.

I got called about a month ago by somebody with a thick russian accent who asked "Do you have a windows computer" (of course I do) so I just told him that microsoft is the devil and I only buy macintosh computers because they're the way of the gifted.

He hung up before I could finish my rant

We got a call like that from someone claiming to be in Miami saying that he had received error messages that our computer had a virus on it and that we should do basically what you described.

Was an obvious scam to me but I could see where non-computer-savvy adults/etc wouldn't be able to pick up on it and fall for it.

Now that I think about it I should have ended the call by saving something like "This is what I see on my computer screen." and link him to an image of troll face ... DAMN IT, oh well, next time :D

Surprisingly, I've never been called by a scammer, just random emails from people telling me my WoW account's been hacked sent to an email that only has SC2 associated with it. Maybe I'll try replying to one of those sometime, haha.

"We are the secret computer police. Your PC is in mortal danger, please follow our telephone instructions." Wut?

Haha. My grandma trolled a scammer. Same sort of thing. My grandma's hearing is really bad, and she kept getting the URL wrong. I was there with my aunt when she got the call, so we let her uh, twist them around.

They've been hitting a lot of people over here. Unfortunately there are quite a lot of the older generation that fall for this scam. These guys are the scum of the earth. Theres a thread about it on one of my local forums

Frankly, this is the type of thing that shouldn't work on anyone, regardless of how technologically not-savvy they are - it's common sense not to give credit card information to complete strangers...

My mom's friend in Korea recently got scammed for 6,000 USD... I just heard about the details a month or so ago, and let me tell you - it was a very sick and twisted scam.

My mom's friend got a random phone call one night from unknown scammers. At the time, of course, she did not know this. Her son had recently entered military service, and there was no way to really reach him after dark. Somehow knowing this fact, the scammers proceeded to spin their manipulative tale.

Apparently, the scammers claimed that her son had briefly left the military compound for break and that he was now in their custody. Claiming to have her son as a hostage, they threatened to kill him unless she immediately wired to them 10,000 dollars. Interestingly, they even let her speak to her "son" - of course it wasn't really her son. Now, this can seem rather silly, for how can you not recognize your own child's (an only child, too) voice? According to my mom's friend, in that dire circumstance, panic overtook her rationality and the stranger's voice actually sounded like her son's.

Long story short, she immediately wired all the money in her bank account to these sly scam artists. A day later, she called the number again to see what happened, but alas the number no longer existed! It was then she realized her folly.

After hearing about this, I realized how ruthless and desperate scam artists really are. That they would take advantage of a mother's love for her child to make some money is cowardly and ridiculously shameful. Scam artists truly are detestable scumbags and they deserve the worst treatment possible from those who catch on to their charades.

I got this scam three times already. On my third time, it was something like:

Him: Hello, I am returning a call from Microsoft tech support, can you access your computer right now?
Me: What are you wearing?
Him: Excuse me sir? I need you to log onto your computer and go to the website www.login123.com and download a scanner. It will find the errors on your computer,
Me: I said, what are you wearing?
Him: We have found errors on your hard drive and you need to run the scanner.
Me: Baby, your voice is giving me a hard drive

funniest is when they cold me from india trying to understand my thick Scottish accent, "poor" lad tried his best, but eventually had to hung up, they're wee bit weak those dirty scammers, more reports here: here, looks like this scam is becoming a real epidemic
