It's with great trepidation that I will be sitting down to watch the final game of the Stanley Cup playoffs. One of these teams is going to win tomorrow, and it is not going to be pretty.
The series has been brutal on both teams. There have been hits aplenty, cheap shots, finger biting, and more. This is to be expected I suppose, especially as we get closer to the deciding game.
I have to be honest though; I have not enjoyed this series. It's been dirty hockey, from game 1. And as if it wasn't ugly enough on the ice, now there are reports of Boston fans actually harassing and assaulting Vancouver fans who were brave enough to make the trip to TD Arena.
Don't get me wrong, I like a good fight every now and then, but this has been a bit ridiculous, hasn't it? Both teams are guilty of playing dirty. The late hit on Horton, the lumberjack chop by Tim Thomas on Burrows. The worst yet is Mason Raymond, who is lying in bed with a broken back and likely won't be able to play hockey again until at least November. The fans were chanting "Luongo" as Raymond was attended to by the medical staff, and couldn't even get to his feet.
Is this what fans want? Late hits? Severe injuries? Is it just turning into UFC on Ice? I find it pretty disgusting that people would act in such a classless way. If this is what the future holds for hockey, I won't be watching it much longer.

Word on the street is that rules against this sort of bullshit (especially shots to the head) are gonna be getting stricter. I've only watched this final series, is it super common all year long?
Either way, GO VANCOUVER.
|
Not so much during the regular season, it's just been getting dirtier the closer we get to the final game. Which is to be expected to a certain extent. This is just not even good hockey to watch right now..
|
You're doing an analysis out of the heat of the moment. Most fans don't want dirty hockey, but unless something super crazy happens (Pacciorety / Chara thing for example lolhabs fan here :S), you will be happy for your team if they do something dirty and get a win, sure it's cheap, but even as a fan you want to win just as much as every player on your team. So you will be "happy" to see someone from the other team lose a player, especially a big player in the playoffs, it's just how it rolls.
|
During the finals, I expect to see the greatest hockey fight ever
|
The fans chanting "Luongo" while Raymond lies on the ice are pathetic. Then he finally gets up and is helped off the ice and they don't even clap or anything? Just straight up classless.
|
I want to see Marchand get creamed -___-

Go Canucks Go!
Iunno, I haven't been watching much (usually just the 1st and 2nd periods, then I go play Starcraft when I'm bored of hockey), but those hits were kinda friggin ridiculous. From both teams. I don't know hockey well enough to go "_______ hit __________ at the boards and gave him a ______ injury", all I know is "that guy hit that guy", and from seeing those, those were some pretty big hits.
@OP- I agree with what you said, I find it's getting way more physical then it could, but let's face it, it's the Stanley Cup Finals, Vancouver's never won a cup, so they REALLY want to work for it.

Have you heard what us in Vancouver have been doing to Boston fans, though? This isn't completely one sided. As bad as what fans in Boston have been doing.. Have you heard that there were an elderly couple whose son or grand son(He played on Boston) or something was playing, so they went and watched the game to support him, and apparently Vancouver fans were throwing things at them, saying extremely rude things, insulting them. I'm sorry, but fans in our city just as bad as anywhere else. It's embarrassing to be around, to be honest.
All seriousness aside though, I will be in Downtown Vancouver ALL DAY tomorrow, to party it up and support(reluctantly) our team~ If we win, I'll party. If we lose, I will run away from downtown and continue partying at my place \o/ Because if we lose, honestly, oh my god. >_>'' hide yo kids hide yo wife Hope to see some fellow TLers downtown! ^____~ If you have no one to chill with, you can shoot me a message because I am the coolest *___* (jokes)

Scared of going downtown tmw... don't wanna be in a middle of a riot LOL
|
I agree with you OP, but I take it even a step further.
Not only has the on-ice play been complete shit, but the reffing has also been complete shit not only in this series, but through the whole playoffs. The two, one could argue, are interrelated.
Everything about the NHL right now seems just wrong. When I think about hockey, I am only filled with negative emotions. Everything stinks.
But that won't stop me from being in downtown tomorrow either, Canucks jersey on, pulling my hair out and biting my nails as tends to be the case...haha.

It was Lucic's grandparents, apparently people threw some popcorn at em or something. Definitely a classless act.
But God, some of the videos and shit coming out of Boston are despicable. Even some of the stuff people haven't noticed, I remember in game 3 they panned the camera to the fans and there were only 2 Canucks out of a hundred or so in the crowd that they showed. Both of them had their heads down while about 10 boston players behind them were hitting them with their playoff flags and leaning over screaming at them. That was after goal 6 or 7 was scored, so you just knew they had been getting reamed on all night. It looked so pathetic.
And that was just a random shot they showed live during the game. Apparently the worst of it was on the streets after the game. It was so bad that for game 4 they had to do a huuuuge increase in police outside the arena.
|
Yeah, I was into it at first, rooting for Vancouver (I'm a Ranger fan, I'm not supposed to root for Boston lol) but after each cheap shot I switched, and now I don't want anyone to win ):
|
As a Boston fan, I am pretty damn ashamed of my town.
Doesn't mean I want Vancouver to win though.

Word. Both teams have been doing ugly things. Ditto for the fans. I dont know how its been in Boston, but here in Vancity, people have been down right hostile. will be avoiding downtown for sure...
To bad too. I was in downtown when Canada won the gold metal in hockey. That was a magical Afternoon. This series isn't.

Yeah, when you compare this Van-Bos series to Olympic hockey, or round 1 Chicago-Vancouver, or round 2 Detroit-San Jose, or a slew of other series and hockey events...this just seems so bad.
|
Totally agree with you here, it's been painful to watch. Really not enjoying the inappropriate acts between the teams. As for Game 7, probably going to stay at home watching it, downtown Vancouver is going to be insane win or lose. CANUCKS HWAITING

I completely disagree with the reffing in Boston, it feels a lot like they are calling a lot more shit on Canucks and giving us a shorter leash than the Bruins. I agree that the hit on Raymond from ice-level at the speed the game is played looked fairly clean.
However, given that Rome got a FOUR game suspension for a non-blindside hit that caused a concussion, and the reason given was "The lateness of the hit and the severity of the injury". So if a concussion is worth four games, what's a broken back worth? The hit was fairly late as well, and caused arguably more severe injury. Yet Boychuk gets away scot-free? Where's the consistency?
This series is worth watching only because it's the cup on the line. Neither team has been playing clean hockey, although IMO Bruin's are playing more dirty. CANUCKS HWAITING

So was I, it is a completely different atmosphere, there wasn't the hostility for the most part.

As someone that lives in Calgary - I can't quite cheer for the Canucks, but I've been cheering for a good hockey series with good play on both sides.
Instead, it seems like I get to watch good goaltending (sometimes only at one end at a time) and some sort of street fight all around them.

I can't sleep due to axiousness and thinking about the game tomorrow, so I come online to TL until I relax and BOOM I see this thread.
Thanks a lot.
PS - Go Canuuuuucks <3

I saw an article in the National Post yesterday titled "Just Give the Cup to Tim Thomas, Neither Team Deserves it".
I agree.

the little bit i have seen is very dirty and thats why i havent watched as much of these finals as I otherwise would have tbh

Look at the country from where the posters are from.. kinda stereotypical i think.. lol. When Boston first entered the playoffs I was rooting for them, because I did not want Montreal to get any further. At this point, I look at it this way. I want Vancouver to win because they've yet to have a cup, Luongo is thirsty for one but also full of holes that lets pucks in when he caves under pressure. I want Boston to win because I think Thomas really deserves it, and being an original 6 and how they act, I like Boston as a very respectable team. That being said, I'm a Devils fan.

You already know my opinion on this series so far...
I'm disappointed with the shitstorm it created, especially since I never mentioned penalties at all. The replay of the hit on Raymond just seemed like he got pushed into the boards awkwardly. It doesn't deserve a penalty other than an Interference minor at most. The hit on Horton was 2 seconds too late and a headshot. Rules-wise it deserved the greater penalty. The league is trying to crack down on headshots after all.
|
from what time was Hockey not mostly about the fights? It brings in all the money and its why people pay $150 in Toronto still for tickets to see a terrible team get beat repetitively. That said... Go Canucks!!!!!! Taking game 7 for SURE!!!!

It wasn't even one second late, and Raymond didn't have the puck when Boychuk drove him into the boards. My god, you're ridiculously biased.

I agree with you on a lot of points on the series, though I suppose I'm a bit more willing to give the players the benefit of the doubt given that they will try and exploit every advantage to win given how long and arduous the season has been for both teams. Looking at particular instances such as the Thomas vs. Burrows hack, Burrows was the initiator in hacking at the butt of Thomas' stick. He would continue to do that unless Thomas made it clear that there would be repercussion. I'm not saying I agree with it, but it's the current state of hockey. Also, I feel the refs have done an outstanding job of maintaining control in this series, consistently sending 4th line goons to the dressing room at the first sign of a rumbling powder keg.
But I have a hard time summoning up any sympathy for the Vancouver fans in Boston. I have been on the receiving end of projectiles hurled from cowardly Vancouver fans at hockey games and a friend of mine was even jumped by a group of Canucks fans at the last Vancouver game I attended. They have definitely earned their spot in the Top 5 Worst Fanbases:

Boston isn't any better, and that's just Boston in general. Sox fans are the worst, so are Pats fans. It must be something about not being able to enunciate correctly that turns a sports fan into an asshole. Or in this case, a Masshole.
I dunno, for a hockey fan it hasn't been an enjoyable series. There are stretches of 5 on 5 where the flow is fast and frenzied, though these instances have been few and far between.

I am enjoying it, but it's not a particularly great series or anything. Mostly because games in which Vancouver lost, they got completely shit on, were never in it and Boston with a lead is not gonna let a whole lot of bad stuff by. They have been god awful on the road. The Vancouver home games were all pretty solid though. Subtract those bad games and I think it's been a pretty exciting series. Games 1 & 2 were very back and forth, even if the B's weren't so hot on offense.
I agree about the refing has been pretty good overall. I think the Rome suspension was really the only major thing that they (well, the league) got wrong. Besides that and a few minor missed calls here and there, the refs have largely stayed out of it unless necessary, they've kept goons from really going wild while still allowing for the nastiness and post whistle scrums that make a long series so awesome.
|
Other than the unneeded slashing, diving and punching that goes on between whistles, the series has been extremely enjoyable to watch. You have to remember that at ice level things are going way faster than what you see, then also add in the fatigue, pain and the desire to win, sometimes there is bad judgement. Everything is relative.

So violence begets more violence. This is one of the problems with this series. Rather than having escalations of violence to make a statement, just do a clean hit. It's getting to the point that I can't watch these games with my 5 year old because it's become so senseless.

I don't know if you guys have heard, but Raymond might not be able to walk again after that hit apparently :/
Either way, I'm extremely excited right now to go have fun. =] ♥ Downtown I go~
