Smart Alec's=good burger+fries, cash only.

Vinnie's cheesesteaks on northside=some of the cheapest lunch you'll find and the best fries I've had in Berkeley (though I've only been here 7 months) Really great food too, all of their menu is good. Cheesesteaks, burgers, chicken. All good.

There's some Korean place on northside in that little cafe with the Top Dog and a couple Chinese restaurants. One of the Chinese places in there is pretty good too and really cheap (the one on the right) but they're cash only.

Diyar's has some good mediterannean food on Durant. Basically if you know where telegraph is, it's just a bit east of Telegraph (toward the hills) right after the Bank of America ATMs and the post office. You'll see a cheesesteak place there too, it's decent. Diyar's has good hummus. I get the chicken kabob plate usually, and substitute the salad for more rice. Only complaint is that sometimes the bread isn't fresh when you arrive, but it's not a big part of the meal anyway.

There's a ton of Thai places, if you go further up Durant just a little bit there's Asian ghetto and a bunch of restaurants. One of them is Basil Thai or whatever, decent place. You can find Gypsy's there too, and they have some good, but greasy and cheap Italian food. Their calzones are freaking massive and really good (and greasy lol) for like 5 bucks. Pretty decent pasta too.

Then there's all those restaurants on Shattuck. There's a Japanese place on Center near the Ben and Jerry's. There's also Indian food, the best two being Viceroy's and Biryani House, both very close to each other on university and Shattuck. Viceroy's is on the southbound fork of Shattuck and Biryani House is on the northbound side (where Shattuck turns left briefly onto University)

Shit...there's more but honestly I don't think you'll be able to hit more than like four of these places lol

EDIT: If you want pizza and you're buying for a bunch of people get West Coast Pizza. They have pretty good special pizzas and stuff, and IMO their cheesesticks are freaking amazing. They're on university but I've never actually been there because I've always bought them for delivery.

However, if you have time I would suggest you go to Cheeseboard. It's one of THE pizza places in Berkeley. One type of pizza a day, always vegetarian. $20 for one, I believe (I don't remember if you can buy half) and they're HUGE and delicious. Downside is the long wait and they're like a good 10-15 minute walk from the northside of campus.

If you're looking for quality food, stay away from Asian ghetto, both the northside and southside ones. Those places are close to campus and decently priced, but the food is terrible compared to what you can get if you're willing to go a bit further away from campus. Cafe Durant is one of the few places near Asian ghetto on southside that I'd recommend. They serve regular American food as well as Mexican food. The closest quality food will be a few blocks down on Telegraph, at the Village and around that area. There's a Thai place called Racha Cafe that's great, Koryo BBQ which serves traditional Korean style food, Norikonoko which is traditional (non-sushi) Japanese food, Swiss fondue, and Ethiopian and Peruvian cuisine. Across the street is Pasta Bene, which has $5 lunch specials, and the quality is far superior to Gypsy's. A bit closer, you'll find Pho K&K if you like Vietnamese food. There are also plenty of decent Indian places all around campus, but Naan 'n Curry is probably the best deal, since they have a $9 all-day buffet special, where you get basically unlimited rice, curry, and chicken. Also, Mario's La Fiesta on Telegraph serves some very authentic Mexican food and the portions are large for the price.

If you go down to Shattuck there is all kinds of great food, but it's generally more on the expensive side. Personally I like Venus and La Note for breakfast. The American style restaurants are all pretty decent, but nothing is outstanding. Avoid most of the Chinese food on Shattuck. Go to Great China on Kittredge between Oxford and Shattuck for the best local Chinese food. Sun Hong Kong near Unit 3 also offers some decent food at a very cheap price (3-6pm Happy Hour specials).
Most of the Japanese food on Shattuck is average at best, but there is a delicious izakaya style on Center called Ippuku (be warned that this is primarily a bar type restaurant so it's probably not appropriate for under-21, but the food is still good), as well as Kirala on Shattuck. Generally if I want sushi or izakaya I'll head down College.

Another area down College about 10 blocks from campus is where Ici and Tara's Organic Ice Cream are. If you want to visit that area, there are also a bunch of great restaurants down there, but they're also on the pricey side. Manpuku is among the cheaper restaurants, and they serve Japanese food in large portions for a decent price. La Mediterranee, Filipo's, Tratorria la Siciliana, etc are all expensive but good. Summer Kitchen Bake Shop has some nice sweets and serves food made with organic ingredients if you're into that. Down a few more blocks you'll find Noodle Theory and a smattering of good Japanese restaurants. The Claremont diner down on College and Claremont also has some great food.

Best pizza in Berkeley is probably at Purple Pepper, West Coast, Zachary's, and Cheese Board. Zachary's is Chicago style deep dish, while the rest are more standard style. All of them are relatively far, though. Burgerwise, try Barney's (one location each on northside and southside) and Nation's.

If you want a hot dog, avoid Top Dog. I honestly don't know why anyone goes there. For $3 you get a tiny hot dog that isn't even close to filling. Just grab a Desi Dog from the truck on campus (usually at Telegraph and Bancroft on the edge of Sproul). During the happy hour special (after 5pm), it's $2.50 and you get unlimited toppings. The size is also huge so it's pretty filling.

Almost forgot to mention, if you want dessert, definitely try out CREAM on Telegraph. Someone else mentioned it earlier. There are also a ton of frozen yogurt places around campus. They're all pretty much the same, except for Yogurt Park (not the Pinkberry style froyo). Other than that, Ici and Tara's are a must-try, but they're pretty far down on College.

That should cover most of the local restaurants around Berkeley. You'd have to go quite far to get anything better, so I won't cover those unless you're really interested. FWIW I'm a grad student at Berkeley, and I've been here since undergrad in 2004, so I've really exhausted most of the food options around here and tried basically everything.

Definitely this. I dine out at North side ghetto a LOT only because I'm a cs major and I have to stay close to SODA.

Oh yeah, La burrita, SouthSide, Shrimp burrito
IS THE BOMB YO! do get it.

Smart Alec's is overrated. I live right on top of it, literally if I poke a hole through the floor I'd walk into the shop.

Bongo burger is pretty good if you want a quick grab.

I don't understand the hype with CREAM.... it's just a fad, same with yogurt park, another fad.

I enjoy John's $1 icecream. Just icecream, no bullshit.

CREAM is good for people who want something other than just plain ice cream. The cookies are hot out of the oven and go nicely with the ice cream. Sure, it's more expensive than buying ice cream and baking your own cookies, but it's also more convenient and the portion is decently large for the price at $1.50. Yogurt Park has been around for years.. it's not really a fad. The new yogurt places like Yogurtland, Tutti Frutti, and Papamingo could be considered a fad, but honestly Pinkberry and the whole frozen yogurt+fruit thing has been around for at least 10 years as well. It's just a nice alternative to the sweetness of ice cream.

If you want a real Berkeley treat I have one for you. There is a Thai Buddhist temple on Russell and MLK, which on Sundays makes breakfast/lunch. This is some of the best Thai food in Berkeley, and is a totally cool experience, for instance the monks cannot accept your money so you have to go buy tokens to pay them with. It is really god food, it is a completely Berkeley experience, and it is also really cheep so I highly recommend this place for your Sunday breakfast/lunch.

MLK is southside. Neeb.

Oh and don't go to naan n curry lol. It has a buffet but the food is terrible (honestly) I'm Indian, but there are better Indian restaurants in Berkeley. Like I mentioned earlier, Viceroy's and Biryani House on University are good. There's also Indian Flavors Express on Bancroft not far from the MLK Student Union, like literally 30 second walk up the street. It's recessed and next to some clothing shop on Bancroft opposite the campus. I believe Sproul Hall is right across the street.

Ah, thanks for that info. I'm not particularly an expert on Indian food, as I've never actually had the chance to go there. I've eaten at nearly every Indian restaurant around the Berkeley area and found them all quite decent, but I didn't know what was considered to be good quality. Now I know where I'll be going in the future.
As for my food knowledge, I'm Hong Kong Chinese, but born and raised in Southern California. I've spent basically every summer of my life in HK, Macao, and China, and visited Singapore, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, and the Philippines several times, so I have some actual experience with those cuisines. I've also been to various countries in Europe, but only once, so I'm not very good with authentic European food either, but I believe a lot of the top level restaurants in America rival European restaurants in technique and flavor, so it's not as hard to compare as something unique like Indian food.

If you're really short on time and want Korean food, try T-Toust on Durant between Dana and Telegraph. It's closer than Steve's and tastes better. There's also a small shop that serves Korean snack-style foods like Tteokbokki and stuff along Bancroft just a bit down the street from there. I don't ever recommend going to Steve's, as it's not even really Korean food. Both of them are also closer to campus than Steve's, so that's a nice bonus as well. Otherwise, if you have a bit more time, definitely head down Telegraph until about Parker, and you'll find Koryo BBQ which is the best place by far, and where I go almost exclusively for Korean food unless I want to head out to Oakland.

La Note
French, Brunch, Shattuck Ave
Cute place to have brunch with a date, good food

Angeline's Lousiana Kitchen
New Orleans, Dinner, Shattuck Ave
Fried Chicken, that's all you need

Ici
Ice cream, College Ave
Unique ice cream flavors, might want to try Tara's down the street, too

Star Meats
Deli Sandwich, Lunch, Claremont Ave
Get there before early afternoon, I always get The Classic, 10x better than Genova's on Telegraph

Gregoire
French/American, Lunch, Shattuck Ave
Different menu every month, I always bring someone and split two different sandwiches. Dinner is pricey so I prefer their lunch menu

Cheeseboard
Vegetarian Pizza, Lunch/Dinner, Shattuck Ave
Overrated but classic

Emilia's Pizzeria
New York Style, Dinner, Shattuck Ave
The best pizza in Berkeley, call early, need to to-go probably

Bakesale Betty
Lunch, Telegraph Ave (Oakland)
Best fried chicken sandwich ever

You should also try...
House of Curries -- Indian food on Durant or College, I'd get the chicken tikka masala + naan
Manpuku -- Korean-owned Japanese restaurant on College Ave, I'd get the Bento Combo
Cafe Espresso Experience -- Korean-owned cafe on Bancroft, I'd get the Bulgogi Sandwich
Chipotle (lol) -- fast food chain on Telegraph

Also, one time I was at Ici and fucking Nitrogen is driving on College Ave stalking me wtf?
Hates Fun🤔

Food: Crepeville, Top Dog, or anything in the asian ghetto (Thai Basil and the Korean BBQ place, called like Steve's or something? lol). Good luck :D

Edit: Unless the event entirely finished by now, which I think it did lol. Silly me for not looking at what time it was XD
