My knowledge of computer mice is very limited. The current mouse I use is the Microsoft IntelliMouse Explorer 3.0 that came bundled with my computer like 8 years ago or something. It's starting to fail on me, double-clicking on its own when I want to single click or click and drag, so occasionally I have issues dragging across and selecting units, or I'll try to select one worker and it selects all of them for me ><

So I'm going to buy a new one. I currently only play BW, so I don't think I need all the crazy high DPI because of the lower resolution. However, I may play SC2 later, so I'm wondering how sensitive of a mouse I need for that.

Are the Razer products worth it? Or Steelseries? Is there a noticeable difference in feel with a higher DPI mouse? I'm looking for something in the $50 range. I've read a bunch of reviews, but a lot of people don't focus specifically on RTS games, so I don't know if it applies directly to me. Also, I remember reading somewhere that one of these products had built-in mouse acceleration that was impossible to get rid of?

I have a logitech G5 and I love it. Simple but gets the job done as is pretty comfortable. The best way is to try them out yourself though and see how you feel. I've heard Razer mice are pretty good. Stay away from sidewinder though.

As for the acceleration thing, its not in any mouse ive heard of but you may as well ask before purchasing just in case

I think that you should find a mouse shape that fits your hand first. Razer/Logitech/Microsoft/Steelseries is not very important, you need a good shape and enough functions for your needs.

I always prefer microsoft / logitech over Steelseries / Razer because I think Razer quality fails and Steelseries are too expensive.

My grip is a palm-grip, usually held farther back, so the tips of my fingers rest at the back of the buttons.

The Razer Deathadder has served me well, and works nicely for palm grip users. Decently priced too.

I love my Razer Abyssus, and it's about $50; however, if you use a palm grip, it's probably not for you.

For a BW mouse, DPI really doesn't matter. If you like a palm grip, save yourself the money and just get Microsoft Wheel Optical Mouse or a Microsoft Intellimouse.

Of course, if you do switch to SC2, you'll want a higher resolution mouse. The Deathadder might be a good choice. I'd also look at what Logitech has at that price range. Be warned that the newer Deathadders are reputed to have tracking problems on cloth mousepads, so if you prefer a soft pad, the Deathadder may not be your best choice.

As long as it's the right mousepad, higher quality lazer mice now of days fair better on random mousepads people use. IR/optical can be a hit or miss kind of deal.

The difference between the MSIE3.0 and any Razer mice is like black and white. Personally, I have an MSIE3.0 as well (one of the "newer" ones), and if that broke I would definitely consider looking for a copy somewhere (I believe they are still sold). If not that, the MX512 and G5 are both really solid Logitech mice, and much more bearable coming from the IE3.0.

Logitech has always had good drivers that (I believe) allow you to disable built in mouse acceleration that would otherwise hacking around with Windows. As for DPI, resolution, or refresh rate, these things are not as important for StarCraft as for FPS games. As long as you have your Windows mouse speed set to the middle, and have disabled "enhanced precision" (unless you've gotten accustomed to it already) you should be set.

Not really. DA 3.5G and Abyssus have issues on some loose cloth pads, but there's plenty of information of which pads work well.

Laser mice still have tons of problems that the best opticals don't.

OP, go to Best Buy and try out the shapes. Deathadder is essentially the same shape as your IME3.0. The other shapes to try out are the MX518, Abyssus and Windows Mouse Optical (same shape as Xai,) if they have it. Shape comes first. The best opticals are technically superior to laser mice, but in RTS games the different really doesn't matter. If you're playing FPS games, it might.

Honestly, since you're just playing BW, you could just get another IME3.0. For lower resolutions, it's still a fantastic mouse. You really don't need to upgrade until you get into higher resolution games where more CPI is needed.

Find one that's best for your hand before you look at brand/price.

If you need to, save up for one if it fits nicely but is more expensive than you're budget right now.

I'm going to be getting the Steelseries Xai because it's most like a normal, what-you-get-with-your-computer mouse. Razer mice have a lot of odd shapes that I don't find comfortable. Same with logitech.
Plus, I find the Xai looks best, haha.

The Steelseries Kinzu(http://ncix.com/products/?sku=42501&vpn=Kinzu&manufacture=Steelseries - I was too lazy to go on the Steelseries site, and I already had this open from helping someone before xD) is a super basic, gaming mouse. About the same size(if not a tiny bit smaller) as a normal, optical mouse.
You can get it anywhere from 30$ to about 60$.

Otherwise, I would also to the suggestion of the Razer Deathadder. Decent mouse, decent price. :3
you are perfect porcelain.

Don't pay attention to DPI, it is a completely worthless value unless you're playing a high resolution game.

If you want something to be picky about, try to find a mouse that does not lose perfect control at high speeds and has no prediction. Use this spreadsheet to help you:

It's really not. The deathadder is tiny in comparison, far lighter, and seems like it's made more for a claw or 2 finger grip than for a palm grip. Anyway, it really depends on what the OP is comfortable with.

If you pump the USB slot to poll at 1000Hz, and the mouse supports that polling rate, I will guarantee that while playing StarCraft no human being will move the mouse fast enough for negative acceleration or malfunction to occur. I played a low sensitivity (ie. 40cm/180degrees or so) shooter for years with the IME3.0 at 500Hz, and never got any faulty movements. StarCraft is a much higher sensitivity game than that.

im a skinny 6'6 sc2 nerd with big ass hands and skinny ass fingers and ergonomic mice were a no-go as my hands were 10-20 times the size that they neeeded to be to fit the mice, so i got a razer abyssus and claw-grip it. its pretty badass.

When shopping don't think you are going to get something in whatever price range. Find what you want and look for deals; just be reasonable.

I use the mx518 and its a good mouse for any game/resolution. Some of the best feet i ever used and everyone that has had one told me it lasts for a long time (unlike razer).

Things to note:
-Big mouse so if you have small hands looks elsewhere
-Palm grip
-2 side mouse buttson with 5 programmable keys
-Set point is definately worth installing
-The material attracts dirt and grease but a simple wipe every 2 weeks will suffice.
-Right hand only

Its on sale right now for $22 which is about as cheap as any mouse gets.

I know the Razer abyssus has been recommended several times, but I would like to recommend the Razer salmosa. It's a discontinued product (because abyssus is the "new salmosa"), I've been using it for couple years now. . I tried out the abyssus but it just wasn't the same for me. Something on the right side of the mouse was bothering me during play. I use the palm grip.

I'm a long time user and lover of the Steelseries Ikari. I don't know why more people don't use it, it's such an amazing mouse.

Eh? Are you sure you're not confusing it with an Abyssus? I have both right here. I'm not sure about the weights, but the DA feels heavier. Widths are basically identical and the IME is slightly longer, but that's because the DA has slanted edges for m1/2; at the center they're very close in length When they're aligned from the back, the buttons all line up (except the IME's m4/5 go long/short, while DA's is short/long.) The biggest difference might just be that the DA is a bit taller.

I've got an Abyssus that I've set to 1000hz polling rate on the hardware switch, though I'm guessing that it doesn't make any difference since I haven't hacked/patched my USB port in anyways. How do I know if it's safe to do this/my hardware can handle the hack and how do I do it?

I straightup recommend a Razer Salmosa like stalife did. I went from a crummy trackball mouse to an Intellimouse to the Razer Salmosa for playing BW, and the Salmosa is just an excellent mouse. I can't speak about the technical aspects except for with a game like BW, older mice really don't present an issue with the game. Even in SC2, the Salmosa performs just fine.

Actually, on second thought, the Salmosa is NOT for palm-grip users such as yourself. I think the Logitech mx518 may be best for you. I have some friends who use palm grip and are quite pleased with it.
