I don't think I could see people using real analysis in chemistry, but I could easily see differential equations if you go into pchem or something.
EDIT: I'm not a chem person, though.
EDIT2: Actually, same here lol. (post below)

I came in here looking for asian girls. I was lied to. That should be a bannable offense.

You're just the same guy who clicked on Angela Jolie naked, as a link on youtube.

Roffles said he'd dance. He lied. That should be a bannable offense.
I think this really should be an issue of whether or not you -want- to take math, as opposed to whether or not you think math will "help" you. You're not going to enjoy it/do very well in higher level math classes unless you're genuinely interested in it, as opposed to getting through it as if it's another worthless liberal art requirement or something like that.

+1 internet to you sir

lol what a misleading title >.< if u are not required to take more math, then why take it? u will be competing against other majors that are strong in math!

If you're going to have to / want to take P-chem, a good background in differential equations as well as linear algebra is super duper helpful. Try to take a higher level linear algebra class as it's more relevant to the math you'll be doing in your chem classes - the basic linear algebra stuff is kind of auxiliary. If you see the word "eigen-" in the course description a lot, chances are its a good class to take.

tbh with you i only opened this because of the asian girls
go ask classmates yo xP they'll probably know more about the system.

"Asian Girls and..." >:D "Asian Girls and Chemistry and Math" :'< "I lied about asian girls." >:T

Warn for misleading title?

I'm another of the "not a chem person" people chiming in. I'm actually in physics, but theres some overlap, and having taken much more math I thought I would throw in my 2 cents. Basically, partial differential equations is an absolute requirement to do anything with quantum mechanics. i.e. solving the hydrogen atom via the schrodinger equations, statistical mechanics/thermodynamics in self assembly. That said, you don't need a serious background in it for most applications and can get by with reading a book or two on your own and learning some software packages that can numerically approximate things. I certainly don't see how real/complex analysis would help you, but linear algebra can always be useful too. If you have the spare time, don't underestimate how much you can learn by just flipping through a book yourself though.
|
what I heard was that if you have a deep math background you can teach yourself much more easily alot about concepts in physics/math that are necessary for your field

Except you already asked me and I said do what you want.

omnom
Also I'm minoring in chemistry, and the only two math classes I'm required to take at my school are differential and integral calculus. I think that's all you need to understand stuff like how to solve for the Schroedinger Wave Equation.

I have already graduated and I majored in mathematics. But I also took a lot of chemistry courses.
First of all, if linear algebra and (multivariable) calculus does not kill you, then you should definitely take them. The reason is that there is something called physical chemistry, which requires some light-duty multivariable calculus.
I remember a friend of mine did a project with a professor on physical chemistry - but he didn't take multivariable calculus previously. He ended up have to learn the calculus himself. I am guessing learning it yourself is not too bad, but why not take the actual course? It's just 10 times better to learn it systematically with a professor of mathematics.
On the other hand, if those courses do 'kill' you, then know that in organic chemistry, you will use almost no math at all.

ive taken orgo, taking pchem next sem.
orgo was really really fun, but all my research has so far been in pchem and I feel like its kind of more of my thing. but even at the highest/research levels of orgo, it doesnt involve math atall?
and honestly i think i'll have room for these courses...its more a matter of whether mere mortal me can survive fucking real analysis and the hard/theoretical diffeq class

My college (Univ of Md) only required 2 semesters of regular calc for biochemistry degree... heh. They may have changed it since then though.
We still had to take a crapton of chemistry courses. a bunch of biochem courses and maybe a couple high level bio courses. TONS of lab courses.

that asian girl isn't even attractive
p.s. you should drink more wine

yep im duckett from princeton. meaning yes, i am a six foot indian baller who kicks so much ass at starcraft that you can't comprehend how good i am. =)

if you went to umd why arent you at TL MD LANS!?!?! wtf. ESHLOW!!!

Bchem is required to take ochem, pchem, and some materials stuff but yeah if you wanna get more in depth with that you should probably just do chem.
Well, I'm a grad student up at UMB now... I haven't been in school at CP since '07... haha o_o

I'm sorry
I just keep coming back to this thread to look at the chick in the op.
My god.
