I eventually got to a point where all my typing is basically one handed, I've been doing it for about 2 months now and can do 60WPM one hand on my filco pink mechanical keyboard . Its just so much quicker than taking your hand off the mouse to do google searches, even coding is much faster because most of your time is spent refactoring and clicking everywhere and adjusting things. Although I am sure there are others who feel the same and are probably much better one-hand typers than me.

I am thinking of trying out one of these ergonomical one handed keyboards to see if it would improve my one hand typing and perhaps starcraft.

My question is kinda moot because I am not considering becoming a pro-gamer, but just out of curiosity do you think these would be allowed in tourneys. Also has anyone tried them?

They would not be allowed in progaming.
Otherwise, everyone would play on gaming keyboards like this :

(which are great btw, you only need to re-map all the keys which could be considered as hack)

Are you left-handed ?

Why is it a big deal to use a keyboard other than a typical qwerty one? It would make sense to me if we were allowed to use any physical keyboard/mouse we wanted. Same thing with remapping keys...

Obviously in a pro bowling you can't take a 2 foot wide bowling ball because that would give an unbelievable advantage... but I don't quite see it comparable with keyboard/mouse arrangements as long as they don't put it macro's and other special functionality like that.

That's true, I only ever thought it was because of macros, but I thought maybe if it was a PS/2 purely mechanical keyboard it would be ok, but yeah now that I think about it, its a pretty dumb suggestion

I'm left handed typing if thats what you mean.

No idea either, kinda doing it out of curiosity. Although I would say one reason is because all the keys are the same distance away, so your wrist never has to stretch or move.

either that's a terrible picture in the OP or you are gravely mistaken because there is no way that all those keys are equidistant from the wrist location

I don't know about ergonomics but i'm pretty sure Maltron (the manufacturer) makes keyboards for disabled people and those with problems moving their fingers.....I think that one is designed to minimize finger movements.

they also make ones without any keys at all where you select characters using these two huge knobs. Its wierd but not actually that slow.
In Hungry Hungry Hippos there are no such constraints—one can constantly attempt to collect marbles with one’s hippo, limited only by one’s hippo-levering capabilities.

I've never understood why remapping keys and special keyboards are barred from tournaments.

It seems archiac to me - as long as there are no macro keys, any layout or keyboard or mouse style should be allowed.

Modifying keyboards by pulling keys out was allowed, why not a different layout in general?

I agree with this entirely and had this discussion with a friend a few days ago. But my friend countered my "Why can't mapped keys be used??" with a "Why can't you play the game the way it was meant to be played?"

GG.

"The way it is meant to be played" is a bit harder to define on PC games.
It's highly dependent on one's setup: QWERTY vs DVORAK, high tech 5k DPI mouse vs simple ball mouse, old PC vs new PC, 25 dollar mousemat vs 1 dollar mousemat, etc, which are all fine and non-cheating ways to play the game. I think it's difficult to determine the line at which using a "better" piece of equipment becomes cheating.

For 1-handed typing I found this on youtube:

Apparently this frogpad has everything on it like a regular QWERTY keyboard. It looks nifty for regular typing, but i doubt it's good for playing games.

Holy shit, what the hell is that maltron thing? It looks like it wants to eat my hand. That circle thing is pretty sweet though.

Holy shit. Is it just me or is that thing kinda cool. I wonder how hard it'd be to get fast at typing with that thing though.
