this here blog is for you people out there who are in need of some good horror movies. no spoilers. 5 highest, 1 lowest.
Black Christmas 4/5
-first slasher film, very cool setting.
Fatal Attraction 5/5
-nod for best pic, suspenseful.
Eden Lake 3.5/5
-cliche fest, but its just so well made.
Wes Cravens New Nightmare 4/5
-first and last 5 minutes suck, but the rest is tense.
The Haunting (1960s) 2/5
-good movie, bad horror film
Splinter 3/5
-interesting take on zombies
Texas Chainsaw Massacre (original) 4/5
-well developed characters and the end is perfect
The Shining 5/5
-the best horror film i've seen so far, but i can see how some ppl didnt buy it.
Audition 3/5
-slow first hour, but the end is crazy.
Rosemary's Baby (1960's) 4/5
-holds up remarkably well even today. well acted.
Childs Play 3/5
- the movie is not good, but "Hi, im chucky wanna play!" makes up for everything
Steven Kings It 2/5
-the ending will make you vomit but when the clown is on screen it's great.
The Wicker Man (original) 4/5
- great suspense, but it takes a while to get going
Carrie 3/5
-final scene is worth the wait
The Decent 2/5
-nothing too remarkable, but its not bad
Evil Dead 3/5
-not really a horror movie but its wicked funny
Dawn of the Dead (original) 3/5
-not scary but any means but has some interesting ideas
Diary of the Dead 1/5
-only romero junkies will dig it, but in all honesty it sucks.
Orphan 2/5
-cool plot twist, but its a pass
Session 9 3/5
-for its low budget its pretty good.
REC 4/5
-much better than paranormal activity.

anyways - hope this helps some of you. i am sorta in this craze to watch a bunch of horror films. - also if you have some for me that i should check out well than do that.

REC was alright, the story and everything was nice, but it isn't scary much except for the very end, one pop-up. The rest was mildly thrilling but suspenseful and entertaining

I haven't seen many horror movies... from that list:

The Shining: yeah... just didn't get this one at all

The Decent... a bit too implausible for me but creep nonetheless... still got kinda ridiculous after a while

Dawn of the Dead... felt like I was playing a game similar to resident evil... entertaining in a similar way

The Shining is indeed a great movie. I'm currently reading the book and I have also read IT and Needful Things before, and Shining is probably the best movie adaptation out of those. Also, Jack Nicholson is a great actor.

My personal favorite horror movie (and probably movie in general) is a French film called "Martyrs". The whole concept and story of this movie is just absolutely mindblowing to me.

I did not enjoy [REC] or Paranormal Activity at all, I thought they were boring as hell and I can't wrap my head around the shaky camera stuff. I know it's supposed to be scary and make it look more authentic, but to me the only thing it achieves is making it unnecessarily hard to watch.

I would also recommend:

-The Poughkeepsie Tapes (documentary style, low-budget underground movie done right)

-Jacob's Ladder (inspiration for the Silent Hill games)

-In The Mouth Of Madness (Lovecraft-inspired)

-Event Horizon (no words for this, great movie).

^ Sad but true. IT is by far my favorite Stephen King book and I really hope the planned 2011 remake will actually do it justice this time around.

yeah lol Stephen King's It was... a disappointment to say the least

As for Carrie, it was like meh... what are they gonna do... did she say blood? .... and then the end is like WTFWERIWEOPJDFKSL lol. I would give it a 2/5 just because the wait is so goddamn long.

The move Halloween is a cute horror flick... the kind that you might watch with a girl.

But I really liked your list

You must be referring to Evil Dead II because The Evil Dead (1981) is most certainly a horror film.

@KNICK ah, those seem good. @ Stevens Kings It should be 0/5 , well the early clown scenes were insanely scary for me. (i hate clowns.) but yeah so long and boring. @fishbowl, yes it was evil dead 2, my mistake. @ Assault, um, i actually really dug the girls acting, but a lot of it was cheesy at least to me... but like i said the plot twist was sweet.

Has anyone seen "In the mouth of madness"? It's kinda cheesy at times, but I really like it. Doesn't have any cheap scares in it either, which I really like. Most movies are just relying way too heavily on those (see "The haunting in Connecticut" uhg).

Check out Drag Me To Hell, maybe it was just me, but I was genuinely scared and panicked for the entire movie. I wanted to leave the theatre that's how bad it was.

The Exorcist is easily the scariest movie I've ever seen. Actually, I frighten quiet easily, but to this day I refuse to watch that movie again.

interesting list - most of your topfilms are also my favorites! Although i'd rate The Evil Dead and Dawn of the Dead much higher because I like it oldfashioned hand made. As low budget films they are really great!

If you like The Shining, than I recommend The house of the devil - don't expect to much, it's way out of the league of Kubrick, but I liked the old school setting the slow pace and the effort... - but definately not a waste of time!

Watch Peter Jacksons early works! Bad Taste, Braindead (most gory scene in history of filmaking i think, most filmblood used)! It's not creepy but so incredibly well made and funny! He put a lot of work and time in those movies with virtually no money = fuck yeah!

I also recommend korean "Horror" form Park Chan Wook: 3 Extremes, Thirst, Old Boy are my favorites.

Only one Takeshi Miike in your list? what? He's really special - all about Yakuza, and computergames and gore + ultraviolence sometimes, very versatile.

What about David Lynch - too creepy for you? To meschugge for you? I think Blue Velvet is a good one to start, if you don't know him - really something different, but I like almost everything from him.

Dario Agento
? Great Italien Horrofilmmaker - all about demons + really young ladies in white see-trough nightdresses - well, very stupid, veeery low budget anc cheap, but really entertaining - I liked phenomena, but it's really not what you call a good film, but entertaining!

some more recommendations:
Låt den rätte komma in - very well made/shot and slow paced vampire movie! 4/5
Drag Me to Hell - you can tell that Sam Raimi is a master filmaker from that movie 4/5
The Children - kids attack parents in a remote place - story seen 100 times but well made 3/5
deliver us from evil - psycho 4/5

I haven't seen it yet but "vertige" looks very good judging from the trailer - note the trailer contains almost NO spoilers!

on my list form your list are: Black Christmas, Fatal Attraction (why not?), Audition, Carrie

Ok i'm off organazing some new films!!! --- ^___^

ya.. about that movie.

the first half is screamers with grudge-like hallucinations

the second half involves beating the crap out of a woman for about 45 minutes

the ending/explanations were well done though

rec was wayyy better than the american version of it. omg. the girl in the american version was hot but she was just so damn annoying at the end. "AHHH!! AHH!! AHH!!!, etc"

the girl in rec screamed 50% less and it was still more effective.

my point is, rec was pretty good and the american version of it sucked.

I have seen it (as stated in my post above) and I really like it. The best thing about that story is probably the fact that it is unclear whether or not this is all just going on in John's mind until very late in the movie. The ending is pretty well done, too.

I could not stop laughing throughout that whole scene, it's just so ridiculously over the top. While not even remotely creepy, watching Braindead sure is an experience.

As for a gory movie that actually makes some sense, I would have to go with The Hills Have Eyes (the 2006 remake).

I close one eye, and I see half. I close both, and I see everything.

Haha, it didn't make any sense to me for about 97 of those 99 minutes either, but the explanation given by "Mademoiselle" + the ending suddenly made it all fit together. I remember sitting there for maybe ten minutes after the credits were over, just shaking my head. I know it's certainly not for everyone, but I thought it was absolutely beautiful and re-watching it with the knowledge of what it actually is about makes it even better.

Drag Me to Hell was a great return to Raimi's roots. I'm a big Raimi fan (I like to think that Spiderman 3 is not on his resume).

I think Pandorum had a lot of potential to be great, but then it deviated from the brilliant atmosphere of the first half, into some horrendous, half-assed, action-based abortion of a second half.

Oh, I totally missed your post. I'm not sure if the reason I like it so much is because the first time I watched it, I sat up alone in dark room at 1am when I was like 15. But I think it really has it moments, and the lack of over-used dark settings and cheap scares makes it really interesting. The ending is also really good, connecting with the apocalyptic movies I usually like. Not to mention the tongue-in-cheek moments, such as the "oh no, not the Carpenters". Really under rated movie altogether imo, I really recommend people to check it out.

You need to watch the movie 1408. If you thought the shining was good, you will like this. the only way to describe it is a mindfuck rollercoaster, one of the best scary movies ever.

I'll throw out some recommendations as well, I suppose.

Rob Zombie's Halloween and Halloween II is pretty decent actually (first one moreso than the 2nd, but meh)

High Tension is also great. Hmmm..I'll try to think of some more good ones ^_^
