So, i know that there are a number of Germans out there (along with other people) that both know German and are quite familiar with German culture, and I need some recommendations. I want to know what are good German music artists and songs that I could listen to, specifically for the purpose of improving my German comprehensive abilities.
A little bit of background: I'm actually another one of them Korean kids, but I was actually born in American, and although my parents were immigrants, I never really learned the language (I know, tragic right?). So I went through my entire childhood only able to speak English, like a good American boy . In any case, since I didn't think I would be learning Korean at any point in my life, and I had to take a foreign language in high school, so I decided to take German with a group of friends of mine.
Side Note: I'm actually taking Korean now in college, kinda funny eh?
Anyways, I started taking German at the start of high school at the age of 15, and now, after 6 years, I'm still going strong! Well kinda, because this is where the problem comes in. Although I've been taking the language for so long, I believe I learned it incorrectly, or at least in a manner which has left me with many bad habits and mistakes. In any case, I figured more exposure would be a good solution to my problems. Luckily for me, my parents figured that since i haven't traveled since 10 years ago or so, so they have suggested that my brother and I take a vacation to Europe, including Germany, where I hope to get more practice in. But still, I would want to start watching more German movies and listen to more music, and I'd really appreciate it if someone could give me some recommendations and show me the way. Also I suppose I would like any help whatsoever, including practice partners, to help me practice German.
Ich liebe diese Sprache und will mehr lernen. Also, bitte zeig mir den Weg!
Xavier Naidoo Die Söhne Mannheims Rammstein Polarkreis 18 Nena Falco (Austrian) Udo Lindenberg Herbert Grönemeyer Marius Müller-Westernhagen Peter Maffay Tocotronic Sportfreunde Stiller Silbermond Juli
some popular stuff :p most stuff which is successful in Germany is some wannabe mainstream English pop
best singer-songwriters: Reinhard Mey / Herbert Grönemeyer
german fun punk: Die Ärzte
make sure you listen to stuff that actually has meaningful lyrics. you won't learn much by watching dubbed Southpark episodes. go and check out Reinhard Mey, that's what I'd do. if you want I can hook you up with some CDs.

Don't tell me you honestly question the significance of South Park dialog. On a side note: South Park has a great dubbed version imo. Better than the original.
Wow, that was quick 0.o. In any case, i'm listening to Allein Allein, and i feel like i've heard this song before. In any case, next step - find all this music and upload it to an ipod and listen non stop! Thanks a bunch guys and keep em coming! Also, i remember a stream caster for SC2 who was German. Anyone know what his stream channel is?
also you should probably tell us what kind of music you like. otherwise you will get pretty random results. i dont like most of the stuff posted til now so i give you sth a bit different. 3 (more or less recent) german party tracks

First off, thanks for the website! But I just wanna say that I don't have too much a strong preference for music i specifically like. I'm willing to listen to anything, but if i don't like it, i simply won't pursue it. Besides, doesn't hurt to try new things.
Ok some artists that werent mentioned before (I can't see the youtube-vids as I am in China...):
Peter Fox (really good lyrics) Fettes Brot (good mixture of meaningful and meaningless songs ;D ) Dendemann
For a better understanding of the German language you can also read the "Der Dativ ist dem Genetiv sein Tod" book series - it is a collection of very funny short stories that are based upon the most common grammar mistakes by German native speakers.
Any movie with Bruce Willis dubbed in German is totally awesome, because his voice-actor is pure ownage! ). Germany has a big and really successful voice acting industry - sometimes the dubbed version are even better than the original.
A list of some good German movies: Der Untergang (every TLer knows this one >.< ), Das Leben der Anderen, Der Baader Meinhof-Komplex, Knockin' on Heavens Door, Das Experiment, Das Parfüm and I forgot the rest 8[
If you want to go even further and read some German news, I recommand www.spiegel.de (the most popular (serious) German news site which favors the social democrats a bit) or www.stern.de (similar site which favors the CDU a bit) and I have to mention that German newspapers and news channels arent as biased as American ones, but they arent totally neutral. (Please dont ever read bild.de, or you will want to quit learning German )
If you want to chat a bit or if you have further questions, feel free to ask/pm/skype me (It's part of my job anyways...)
