Hey guys!

So my younger sister b-day is coming up on Monday and my dad wants to buy her a freaking laptop for her 14th b-day present (spoiled girl) but not an expensive one. He mentioned of the laptops selling at Best Buys and told me to check them out that's low and cheap budget one and I found across these two which I found are cheap and also good:

http://reviews.bestbuy.com/3545/9700678/reviews.htm

http://reviews.bestbuy.com/3545/9555769/reviews.htm

So my plea to you guys is this, both cost 370 dollars, both laptops seems equally good with pros and cons against one another and it's pretty much came down to the situation where only one of these two will be upon my younger sister's grasp TONIGHT (once again, spoiled girl). So tell me my fellow TLers, WHICH LAPTOP SHALL SHE GET TONIGHT?

Poll: Which Laptop from Best Buys shall she get tonight?
(Vote): Compaq - Presario Laptop
(Vote): Acer - Aspire Laptop
(Vote): Other (I know something better at Best Buys that's just as cheap)

amd laptop = better multimedia & gaming
intel laptop = (probably) better battery life

btw can someone give me a link to the amd laptop processor. the specification are very unclear, I suspect it's a 55nm processor.

Whoever voted "Other", please explain what other laptop AT BEST BUYS could possibly be better than either of these 2 laptops shown with the price of 370 or less. Thanks.

Just get a netbook. Any netbook with a 6 cell battery should do, since the specs are all essentially the same. Cheap "regular" notebooks typically are terrible

I believe (just from going through google) that the AMD TF-20 uses the 65nm manufacturing process.

I would go with the Compaq laptop if gaming is not a concern.

I second the netbook motion. Unless she's doing anything other than what typical 14 year old girls do (facebook, perez hilton, youtube), there's no need to a full laptop. Plus netbooks are cool.

Acer, Compaq, and HP are just really poor quality laptops. You're better off spending abit more for a Dell.

Going with just "65nm manufacturing process" tells you nothing about the quality of the laptop.

Best are pretty crap to be honest. Use it for a year maybe.

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/HP - Pavilion Laptop with Intel® Core™ i3 Processor - Mocha/9705373.p?skuId=9705373&id=1218154380159

would be a better buy.

It's not even about the "quality". Look at those beasts, laptop are underpowered already and you want her to get a Celeron?

Can't access that link... Best Buys has a tendency of making those links an one time access links...

But here is the breakdown of this situation. SHE WILL BE USING THAT LAPTOP FOR COUPLE OF YEARS, PREFERABLY TILL END OF HIGH SCHOOL (she's 8th grade now and will be 9th in fall). And I know netbook is cool and all (I want one... =/) but there are some disadvantages with that like no CD drive and etc.

Also note that this is a 14 years old girl getting her VERY FIRST LAPTOP so suggesting a laptop/netbook that's like 400 or over is like spoiling her more than she already is....

Get an external cd drive with it? They're cheap.

That's only one of the few disadvantages of a netbook in contrast to a laptop. The ability to modify and upgrade your laptop, the screen and space it can holds, the limited capability, etc. And it's not like dad would buy her external cd drive with the netbook and she gotta get one herself...

should get a cheap lenovo thinkpad. theyre not really for gaming (but it's not what your sister is gonna use it for so), but they have good battery life, are durable, and theyll last her through high school.

I would never buy a Dell or Compaq laptop. For Dell: my brother has a Dell XPS laptop. The harddrive failed four times. The customer sevice was also atrocious in getting it replaced under warranty. For Compaq: I've used several new top of the line ones. They were all ugly and had performance issues.

Hope it helps. I could elaborate more on the experiences but not sure if you care anyway.

Edit: Also, as a add-on to the post above, I've had issues with lenovo thinkpads. Mostly due to the harddrive vibration protection stuff being broken. They aren't like the IBM thinkpads used to be since the name got sold to lenovo.

My dad purchased that exact Compaq computer about a month ago and it's pretty awesome so far as well as being reasonably priced for the specs of it.

Dell usually set their XPS HDD to R0. It improves the HDD performance, but you have a lower fault tolerance, therefore it's easier for the HDD to die.

All in all, buying a laptop is pretty much by word of mouth.

Check out Asus' stuff. They're have the best after-sales service right now.

But for 370 dollars.... hmm... I don't know. It's hard to decide. Probably because we're all gamers and we're more likely to know the higher end stuff.

Well the problem is in just 40 minutes, my dad will drag me to Best Buys to choose the cheap and whatever laptop we find for my spoiled little soon-to-be 14-years old sister. And the 2 links I sent in OP were what I found as the cheapest at their website that is available at the store. So there, folks, unless the tide of votes go thru, I'll probably tell my dad to buy the Compaq one and let my sister be tortured for 4 years of use...

A laptop is a tool. Not a toy but I guess you don't really care how slow or fast it is considering she is in high school.

I agree, if you really need it just buy an external cd drive.

I can't even remember the last time I put a CD into my laptop...

clearly a 14 year old girl has use for substandard screen size of a netbook and the benefits of ultra portability as she will most likely be carrying it with her to class. lack of an optical drive would be highly appreciated as well i believe. she might also appreciate the substandard keyboard size as well.

clearly a netbook is the best option. clearly.

protip: unless portability is of utmost concern cheap laptops are better value than netbooks.
the world's a playground. you know that when you're a kid, but somewhere along the way everyone forgets it.
