So I want to play a new game on my PC, preferrably an RPG or a similar game. I was thinking of Titan Quest, Icewind dale 1 and 2, Knights of the old republic, D&D temple of elemental evil etc.

Any other ideas? I don't think Fallout is my cup of tea. Also I've played through Baldurs gate 1 and 2, Elder Scrolls: Oblivion.

Neverwinter Nights HoU ? Its just as addictive as BG even thou one may argue its not as good

Titan Quest is ok but I liked more Dungeon Siege 2 from the same year. My recommendation will be Fable: Lost Chapters. Even thou its really flawed as a game I loved the OST the atmosphere and the overall mood - its just really relaxing to play this game

Since youve played Baldurs gate 1&2, play its spiritual successor Dragon Age.
Very good game

If you're looking for a change, try Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines. + Show Spoiler +
[image loading]

It's really one of the greatest RPGs ever made, but it's constantly overlooked due to the crazy amount of bugs it had upon release.

Thankfully the community has fixed everything. So if you decide to play it, you really need the unofficial community patch found at

Have you tried Planescape: Torment? If you liked Baldur's Gate, you'll most likely like this one as well. It has an some interesting additions and a good story, some of the quests are a bit more... complicated.

Actually I'm not too fond of the 3d graphic, tends to make me nauseous after playing for a while. My fav game is probably Baldur's gate of the above mentioned. Oblivion was pretty awesome though

I tried Dragon Age and for some reason I didn't really like it. Maybe it's because you play through the game with all the different characters which seems boring to me.

KOTOR is an option but I'm not too into 3D RPG:s

Planescape: torment might be an option. Is there any fighting at all though?

Oh, I should mention I'm on a Pentium 4, 3 ghz with 512 mb graphics and 2 gigs ram.

It sounds like you prefer older games, I suggest Monkey Island, Day of the Tentacle, or Grim Fandango

Dragon Age Origins looks amazing, only heard good things but never played it myself.

That's actually a kick ass idea. I started playing it like a year ago but forgot about it, woot!

Oh wait, I mean Zelda 3 for SNES.

Russian guy, thanks for that list of RPG games. Now I just have to choose a game....I really like the atmosphere of the D&D games and I prefer fantasy over science fiction.

I've tried playing Torment at least 10 times due to feedback such as yours. Unfortunately I just cannot deal with reading all that dialogue. A few days after reinstalling I will just not play any more. I guess I've been spoiled by the 100% voice acted dialogue of newer RPGs =(

Since you're looking for PC games. I would recommend Morrowind, the story to me seemed a lot more interesting (Than Oblivion).

Dragon Age is also a really nice RPG that came out within the last year I believe, I couldn't stop playing this after it first came out.

Torchlight is a really fun solo rpg made by, I think two of the guys that made diablo 2(maybe 1). It's a dungeon crawler but the graphics, story, and gameplay make it pretty fun. I got mine for cheap during the steam Christmas sale.

Dungeon siege is an older game, it's story lies in its single player. Has a great soundtrack, and if you have some people to play with can be really fun.

Mass Effect is more of a futuristic RPG, since it takes place in space. It really plays on the aspects of good and evil and the decisions you make directly effect the outcome of scenarios in the game. Sadly, the game is rather short. I also found it kind of easy. (Might have just been playing on an easy setting tho) I have not tried Mass Effect 2.

NeverWinter Nights I remember being pretty fun. I think I played a lot of it multiplayer though. On the other hand I never really got into NWN2.

The Last Remnant was a really fun tactical JRPG.

Games I recommend you stay away from:

Two Worlds:Gameplay was very stale. The movement and controls in it made me really dislike it.

Gothic 3: Unless there are community patches there is a huge flaw in this game, a glitch even. You can evenly fight against orcs and humans. When it comes to wolves on the other hand, there is a glitch. They seem to be able to just constantly attack you without you really being able to do anything. Which is a real bitch once the wolves start getting stronger. The game had a good Soundtrack and I really enjoyed it until those damn wolves.

Hmm funny, I can't stand listening to voice acted dialogue in the long run and prefer reading for myself since it's quicker. I love a good story as much as anyone else, but there has to be alot of fighting too. IMO Baldur's gate comes close to perfection with this in mind.

Morrowind is of course an option but it feels dumb to play it after I've played Oblivion. Also I'm not too fond of 3d graphics in RPG's.

I've played Dungeon Siege and boy do those games get repetetive

Gothic might be interesting I guess...

I know, man. It sucks knowing I'm missing out on a masterpiece. Curse my laziness.

Oh and, if you don't feel like going down the Vampire route (which I always recommend) I will second KOTOR. It's brilliant.

Everyone's KOTOR'ing it up it seems! I've tried it but for some reason grew bored and uninstalled it. Should I give it more time?

The 3d graphics make it not as good for me. Now, if it would've been in topographic view I would probably love it

I don't think I got very far in it either. I stopped playing after I became a Jedi... Which is most likely when the game gets good. I just get distracted easily. I'd like to give it another try though.

play ANACHRONOX if you havent yet !!!!

its by far the best RPG ever made IMO and provides kickass storylines, epic plot, very nice battle system (think of an improved final fantasy 7/8/etc. battle system) nice UI (it uses 3rd person view with the quake 2 engine IIRC), and HILARIOUS party characters including - just to name a few- your mouse cursor, a robot-toy struggling for adulthood, a superhero in his most recent slump and an entire planet (LOL much?)

plsplsplsplspls give it a try (btw it was created by the same ppl who did Deus Ex -> ION STORM)

There are only two downsides to playing Morrowind after Oblivion. The graphics and how fleshed out the guild quests are in Oblivion. Nearly everything else about Morrowind is superior to Oblivion. Game is more fleshed out, the story is better, they don't hold your hand as much, and it's just so much more enjoyable as a whole.

If you really liked Oblivion, and can't find a 2D game to play, definitely try Morrowind. Shame you didn't pick it up on Steam a few months back, it was only $5 for it and both expansions.

Yeah, I loved the game so much that I've purchased it three times.

Once on Xbox, which was an incredibly buggy version, but I still logged 200+ hours into it. Then the GOTY edition on Xbox again, which was still considerably buggy, but I still logged in another 200 hours or so. Then when the GOTY edition was on Steam for $5, I couldn't pass it up. I've only played it about 20 hours this go, but I know it's a game I can go back to whenever I have nothing else to do, and I'll enjoy it.

If your looking for some combat give TOEE a try. The first village is ass boring but after that it picks up and turns into a great game. Some of the best D&D combat around.

In fact i'd recommend all three of troika's games. They're all pretty stong for different reasons and all have the 'proper' crpg feel to them.

I'd recommend The Witcher, quite a nice action-rpg with some unique elements of play. Maybe the only bigger game I played through in the last 3 years or so.

Here's the intro video, in case you're interested. A bit deceptive about the fight system :-p, but maybe you like the setting.
+ Show Spoiler +

If you decide to try it, make sure you patch your version, otherwise it has some crazy load times.

Yeah, KOTOR is the only game I ever had dreams about.

Oh yeah and I second The Witcher, though I doubt the OP's computer can handle it. It's the best RPG of the last 5 years IMO.

Hm, I suspect that D&D Temple of elemental evil would make me all giddy and warm inside

I feel an almost OCD-like urge to play KOTOR soon after all the praise

SO, The main ones I could play so far are:

KOTOR, Morrowind, D&D ToEE, Icewind dale (I kind of want to play through this series), Titan Quest, Gothic, Planescape:Torment

Hmm, and some other ones mentioned like Witcher, Dragon Age (hmm....) etc.

I really loved BG1 and BG2 and the the 2 KOTR games, but I have to say I hate Icewind Dale
this game is so bad, the only thing you do is fighting
and I don't mean like fighting cool fights against 1 dragon, but against like 30 lesser creeps who are just annyoing and tend to kill you after you hacked on them for 10 mins, just because there are so many of them
I really recommand you, that if you aren't really into hack and slash in BG format not to play IWD

Really? Is that true for both IWD 1 and 2?

After all the games got quite decent reviews at 85-90% according to wiki.

Planescape: Torment and Arcanum are the best ones I've played. Combat in Planescape is not too interesting though - but the dialogue makes up for it.

I guess Arcanum is a bit more well-rounded, it doesnt have any parts of the game that felt inferior to the other parts of the game. It has such a cool interactive world

but If i go back to try to play those older bioware games it's just too slow and old for me now

if u like hack and slashesque games, sacred 2 isn't bad
sacred 2 is better than titan quest

Really? Is that true for both IWD 1 and 2?

After all the games got quite decent reviews at 85-90% according to wiki.

They are pretty decent, it's just that the ratio of combat-to-story is higher than it is in Baldur's gate for example. Still, there is tons of cool lore and locations to explore.

Yeah, shouldn't be a problem. You'll probably miss out on some bits of info that's tied in from the first game, but you can play it stand-alone and not feel totally left out of the loop.

Meh I like playing all the games in a series so if I choose IWD I'll most likely play both games.

Damn this is tough, new games keep poppin up. I've never heard of Sacred 2 for instance

Arcanum, what's that? I looked it up, I like the graphics etc...then again I'll be the first to say that a good RPG does NOT rely on good graphics.

Hell, I've spent a ridiculous amount of hours on Nethack, Angband, Moria etc and those games are made up of ascii signs lol

The Fallout Series.

I'm not a big RPG fan/player and I recently started playing Fallout 3. All I can say is WOW! I'm loving this game so much. After I finish the main game and all the expansions I'm gonna play 1 and 2.

edit: You mentioned you don't like 3D graphics. Someone recently made a thread outlining some great RPG's.

Download a SNES/PSX emulator and play some of these.

Yeah people have told me a million times to play the Fallout games. I've just never gotten around to it for some reason. Is it science fiction? It seems a little bit steampunk imo, which is pretty cool

Cool. I'm not too into Japanese RPG games either, probably because I never had a nintento (but instead a kick ass Amiga 500 and Atari) growing up. Also I have chrono trigger and those games and a SNES emulator, and I've already started playing them. I think they have potential, thanks for reminding me.

I can relate. I honestly haven't played a lot of rpg's to begin with, but if it wasn't for a mixture of extreme boredom and curiosity. I would of never started playing. It's a post nuclear fallout/apocalyptic/science fiction setting/story, but it's really good! If you love The Road Warrior, you'll love this game. It's smart, edgy, and just does it for me compared to Japanese RPG's.

At first I was overwhelmed due to the size of the world and amount of choices in game play you could choose(note: I haven't played a lot of RPG's to begin with), but after a while I seriously started getting into the story/loving the setting/ and being able to choose my play style with my character.

I definitely recommend you get the Game of the Year Edition and just go for it. I'm glad I did.

For 3? it's somewhat standard FPS game play. Although there's this optional/ and sometimes necessary V.A.T.S system. It basically lets you pick what body part to aim at and gives you a percentage of possible success. Although boring after a while, it does come in handy.

Arcanum is not entirely a fantasy RPG, it's magic mixed with... uhh... steam trains level of technology, so steampunkish I guess? In the game however you learn that the two don't mix very well - if you play a mage character, you're banned from riding the train and such. The game also has dwarves and orcs. Can't tell you much more about the story, since I don't think I played it through last time around, might just do so now tho.

Good, because Fallout 3 was terrible, especially compared to its predecessors.

Fallout 1/2 uses an isometric view throughout the game and a turn based combat system which you're given action points. Moving, using items, and attacking all take a certain amount of action points and when you're done, it's your enemies' turn.

PS:T is an RPG of the highest tier alongside Arcanum, Betrayal at Krondor etc., but isn't, as suggested by a previous post, going to change your perspective on the world. But, in terms of depth and writing it's classes above the BG's and Oblivion and may well revolutionize your view of RPG's (if those two are represetative of your CRPG experience). If it's too old, NWN2: Mask of the Betrayer is something of a substitute.

FO 1 is perhaps the strongest candidate for best RPG ever. If you don't like it, play it again and again until you do. You might want to give FO3 a shot first (disclaimer: I haven't touched FO3) since if you really appreciate FO1, but might ruin FO3.

KOTOR and DA (you might as well throw the ME's and JE on too) are probably what I'd call junk food. Fall back on these if you're having trouble getting into the above two. You'll probably like them, but they aren't good for you.

fallout 1 is great, fallout 2 is meh.
it's just boring to start all over if the game itself doesn't change. like a not-so-good expansion pack.

oh and don't play icewind dale. at least icewind dale 1 is terrible terrible terrible. baldurs gate was fatastic because of the story, characters and open world.
icewind dale is like diablo, it's so retarded.

while (playing==true)
get_quest();
{travel_to_random_dungeon();
clear_dungeon_levels_1-4();
defeat_boss_in_level_5();
travel_back_to_town();
set_quest_status(done);}

Planar Erratus BEST FUCKING RPG EVER MADE!

Seriously tho

The classics: BGate, Torment, IWD2, Fallout, Arcanum were all great games. I kinda lost interest in video games a few years ago so haven't played much of the newer 3D rpgs. I definitely hate 3D tho like the other poster mentioned.

I liked that Arcanum came with a world editor and some decent mods/addons were made with it. I don't think this was too common with the other RPG's? The infinity engine modding tools were damn good for the other games, but you still had to go through quite a bit to build something. Maybe I just wasn't aware of all that was available. I think that dog in Arcanum was a bit too overpowered tho. Can't remember it's name, but man did it have a bite. Virgil was a bit annoying at times, but you kind of had to have him along just for his story.

Oh man.... I remember rolling some riddlebox vigorously till I got the right combo by luck. Damn good game that too. I really hate that early "3d" 1st person movement scheme though nowadays. Which reminds me of Albion, it was a game with really nice storyline but kinda too linear options and repetitive combat.

Oh and be sure to check if theres some unofficial patches or high resolution mods or such for those Black Isle and Troika games, theres a ton of small bugs and even just blocked content in the initial releases even after the official patches.

And I dont think Virgil is really necessary to have with you, if you find him annoying just dump him. But I guess most will like the added story he gives. Dunno about the dog, I dont think I ever had him, but some builds for the PC would easily rape any combat pretty fine alone as well.

The dog's name is, quite simply, "Dog".

He's not overpowered, he's just more useful in combat than almost every other npc in the game, but that has less to do with Dog's power than the others' badness. NPCs are either built stupidly or are stupid. Seriously... mage pcs can absolutely rape the game. But mage npcs are fucking horrible except, arguably, for the healers. Look at Geoffrey who is probably the best built of the mage npcs. He maxes force, fire, and black necro. Any player with those spells would breeze through the game. In terms of combat, the only thing he's really missing is temporal. The guy could throw up a shield of protection and spam harm and fireflash, and pull out disintegrate for the big enemies and rape everything. But that's not what he does. Instead, he casts body of fire and tries to melee like a dumbass.

Virgil is among the more fleshed-out NPCs and one of the most useful despite his shortcomings, but you don't need him and I found Magnus' story to be more interesting especially with Loghaire in the group.

Wait, maybe it's been too long? How many NPC's can you have in Arcanum? I loved Magnus and prob ditched Virgil the 2nd time around. Yeah you're right Dog wasn't overpowered, he was just "better" .. so much better! And "free" if iirc? I remember getting pretty pissed at the NPC mages. Luckily I always played as one.

I always, always, always play a girl for some reason in rpg's and always evil. It's really hard sometimes after you've played the game a few times and know what things are available for "good" characters. That's always my biggest gripe. Seems all these RPG's were setup for goodie too-shoe types? Any rpg's that have a good storyline for evil characters. I loved Viconia, Edwin, and Korgan! Well gotta love Jan Jansen too. Except an evil person would never bother rescuing them? Someday I'm going to play a good character.. not.

As I see it, good guys do the given quests... If youre bad you do whatever you like, steal and kill. One of the most fun things in Arcanum was imo stealing stuff without getting caught - some places its quite easy but some places it really required nice planning.

I should play it again sometime... Its long enough so that I dont remember everything and it changes so much with race/aptitude/alignment anyway.
