I'm getting a laptop within the next few days/week and currently looking at getting one from ASUS (though I am open to others). I don't own a desktop nor do I plan on buying one anytime soon so whatever I get is what I'll be using for everything: university, business, gaming, movies, etc for the next 2-3 years at a minimum. All the laptops I've had previously have been Lenovo which I love. Their customer support is great, the laptops are reliable, and I've had very little problems with them. Unfortunately, they don't build any gaming laptops so I'm switching companies. A few friends have recommended that I buy an ASUS laptop. After a bit of research, it appears that the G73JH-X1 is the leader but that could change. Here are the main specs:

17.3" / 8 lbs
CPU: Intel i7 720 QM (1.6ghz)
Memory: 8 GB
Graphics Card: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5870
Video Memory: 1GB DDR5

Now I've heard a few different things about ASUS on both extremes concerning their reliability, customer support, and issues with the laptop. So my question is this for ASUS laptop owners: what are your experiences with the company and their products/support? Also, if you're knowledgeable in laptops and could recommend a better one or a better deal, I'm all ears. I just need a laptop that won't be useless for video games next year since I'd like to use it to play Diablo III! Thanks!

I have a beautiful ASUS 17inch Laptop, just over a year old now and it's doing just fine. I broke the screen by accident but otherwise it's been perfect

I've got an ASUS as well, probably a similar model to what N3rV has. I've never had a problem with it, they're hella reliable and don't come with a ton of unnecessary software! Mine's just over a year old too, i've had no hardware problems whatsoever.

I have a Asus M50Vm-B1 which I have been using for almost 2 years now and it still runs like it did when I first got it. Like FakeSteve says, they are really reliable and don't come with a ton of unnecessary crap.

www.btotech.com - That's where I ordered mine and they actually have a thing called "Accidental Drop Warranty" which covers your laptop even if you physically damage it (but I haven't tried that and don't plan to anytime soon). So as far as their customer service, I have no clue

If I remember correctly, ASUS laptops were found to be the most reliable. That is, they have a very low failure rate. So anything you get from them will probably be very quality. Another brand you may want to consider is Sager. They make very high performance laptops that don't have the gimmicky gamer look.

The G73 is the laptop to get. I have it. The G73-X1 is not the laptop to get. Why? When I bought it on newegg, the price was $1440, they jacked it up to $1600 due to how fast it was selling out. You are better off pre ordering the A-1 or A-2, both are upgraded versions of the laptop for around the same price. Xoticpc, gentech, and a few other resellers will have them in stock by early March.

As for the performance of the G73, I am currently very impressed. I can play all games at decent settings, and the CPU is fast enough for all modern applications. 8 GBs of ram is always nice, and the hd screen is just beautiful.

The cons to this laptop would definitely be the touchpad(quite annoying and hard to get used to), and the heat of the GPU(this little fucker hits 93 after 3 hours of gaming >.>)

I don't know what you heard about Asus but they have always been pretty high in terms of reliability. They sell good laptops, motherboards, and monitors. The laptop comes with a 1 year accidental cover, and a two year warranty.

edit: if you do get his laptop, do a fresh install of windows 7 immediately, the amount of bloatware they put this thing is unreal. I had eighty something processes running on my first boot.

hmmm yeah i've gotta say, while the touchpad on my model is actually pretty good (a lot of the time i don't bother plugging a mouse in if i'm just browsing the web, touchpad functions really well), my sister also has an ASUS and I don't like her touchpad at all. If I have anything bad to say about these laptops, that'd be it. Make sure you like the touchpad if you intend to use it! if you're gonna just plug a mouse in 24/7 regardless, then it doesn't matter

Thanks for the help / comments so far (you and everybody else). Would you recommend this G72Gx-A1 instead? Faster speed (2 ghz) but the graphics card is a bit worse than the ATI. I'm a bit of a tech newb if it's not apparent. :[

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220688

is a better deal than the G72Gx-A1, but the best computer on that list is still the one with the 5870M.

I'm not 100% sure but I think a quad core i7 even at 1.6GHz will be plenty fast for gaming (the only problem I could see if if a game isn't able to utilize all the cores or something.) Having a better video card is more important than a better cpu for gaming though unless your cpu is just trash which an i7 quad core is obviously not.

I got an ASUS laptop the late spring/early summer of 2006 and I am still using it. What is it now? 2010? I have a laptop cooler to cool my laptop down constantly but it's still very nicely functional enough that I only had one incident of my laptop auto-shutdown due to extreme overheat and that was about 2 months ago.

*Edit* Back then this laptop specs were the tops but now I suppose it's crappy because it has:

100 GB harddrive
2.0 GHz
2 GB Ram
Intel Core Duo
Windows XP (Now upgraded to windows 7 ultimate manually)
A SUPER CRAPPY CHEAP GRAPHICS CARD
" " " " Sound Card

Has SC running like a charm.... except color bug thing with this new windows 7....

ASUS has great everything, monitors and laptops are good and definitely worth buying.
Why would you ever choose failure, when success is an option.

No, get the G-73. The i7 720 QM is faster than the old mobile quad cores. This has built in turbomode and goes up to 2.8ghz(runs more like a dual core, which is better for most gaming). The ATI 5870m is the fastest single GPU, 8 GB's of DDR3 ram is insane, + the overall build quality is a lot nicer.

Here is the temperature range you will be getting with this laptop. And Starcraft 2 runs perfectly on this thing. Max settings gets pretty much max fps(always above 60).

this. unless the laptop version of the i7 has more ipc than the desktop i think you'd be bottlenecked by your processor in games that dont utilize more than 2 cores (which is most) although i don't know if i7 laptop chips have turbo mode which would help a lot.
the world's a playground. you know that when you're a kid, but somewhere along the way everyone forgets it.

I've got an older ASUS laptop (F3 series) and my only gripe with it is that the battery life is shit so it's not very mobile. I don't know if ASUS has tweaked their batteries substantially since, but is that even an issue for you, OP?
I enjoy Starcraft when I'm not too busy being dynamic and attractive.

It matters but not enough to discourage me from getting it. Can either buy a second battery but I only need it when I'm at a friends house/class/in my room so a plug will be near by. Thanks for the help so far.

Quick question that doesn't need a new topic.
My G50VT-x1 had a problem a couple of days ago, the backlight of the LCD burned out, fortunately for me it was a couple of weeks before warranty runs out. I went to best buy and they said they don't repair ASUS, they replace them with a laptop of the same price, which is awesome because it was like 1000 dollars when I bought it.

What is a good laptop to get TODAY for around $1000?? I don't need it to be big or anything, mainly powerful.
