Regarding the healthiness of meat, it may be that meat is considered less healthy because it's very dense on the calories, and people tend to eat too much meat (I'm extremely guilty of this one). A 20 year study on calorie intake and its effect on the lifespan of monkeys showed a significant increase in the lifespan of monkeys with calorie restricted diets.

It's very rare to see good vegetarian athletes. The protein quality and amount you only get from soy, nuts, etc.... even if you are ovo-lacto isn't all that great compared to meat. If you are doing heavy physical activity you need the meat for the protein for positive nitrogen balance to maintain musculature/strength/strength-endurance

Would you consider just eating chicken and cutting out pork/beef/lamb? That's probably be a good compromise between being more healthy and still being able to maintain a balanced diet where you are getting everything your body needs, especially if you are going to be involved in athletics.

Getting enough protein is harder when you're vegetarian but it can be done. Dairys, beans, nuts, fish, eggs and other stuff are all good as well as some grains. There is protein powder as well that you can mix with water or with shakes/smoothies to get some extra there as well. Would you consider just eating chicken and cutting out pork/beef/lamb? Fish is much better source of protein (plus healthier b/c of omega 3s.. not to mention most meat is grain fed = high in omega 6 w/o balancing omega 3s)... but it's so freakin' expensive.

In other words it takes 10 times as much cereal to produce the amount of red meat we eat each day. Lol you're right but you state it very oddly (dunno if English is your 1st language so sorry if it's not.) I think what I've learned was that the bigger the animal the worse the impact on the environment. So eating chicken is not so bad, eating pork is worse, and eating beef is the worst in terms of the cost to produce the meat. Cows require so much water/grain that if everyone ate as much beef as the average American we'd need like 20 planet Earths or something. Also, you can't exactly compare cereal to meat because one does not replace the other since meat=maily protein/fat and cereal=vitamins/minerals (or sugar if you're eating the kiddie stuff). Some cereal might have some protein but unless it's something weird it won't have a lot. Combine them both are you're getting a good portion of what you need though.

Yea getting decent fish is a little bit more expensive but if you just buy it at the store and prepare it yourself it's still not too bad. I can have fish for a meal but it doesn't quite satiate me the same way as meat does. I never have heard of omega 6 before though.

Im not going to start whole new debate here, but there is an average amount of calories your body can intake and process throughout your lifetime. If you eat less/food with less calories you will generally live longer. Its a fact. also back in a day i tried something called "macrobiotics", no meats, mostly grains, veggies, some fruit. I did lose few pounds even though i was skinny even before that but overall i felt really good. First of all, things like diff skin irritations, acne etc will disappear, your feces will smell 100 times better too. Your tongue will clear up, there will be none of that yellow shit on it. You wont ever stink when you sweat. Your eyes will be cleaner and shinier. You will feel less tired w/e you do. Thats not right away and you will crave meat and sweet things sooo much. I think ud have to give up drinkign milk though to fully enjoy these effects. But in a month you will start feeling much nicer then before. I was a runner back then and i felt that recovering was easier. Your body wastes a lot of energy on processing meats and junk food. It takes a lot longer to digest meats too. im not a fanatic and i eat a lot of meat currently. But i do know it benefits your body if you dont

My mom used to eat meat and have really stiff / painful finger joints, but when she went to being vegetarian like 4 years ago, it totally cleared up. Anecdotal completely unscientific evidence, but it worked for her! (Btw I'm not vegan, so I do eat eggs/milk).

All of this happened after he stopped eating meats so it is true One other thing, though this is not really an exercise. Change your diet to decrease the amount of uric acid your body must eliminate, i.e. eat less meat. Uric acid builds in the joints and causes stiffness and pain; this is one reason most yoga people are vegetarian (not that I am, just passing along the "good" news). Hope this helps. there is a scientific explanation after all~
